CANOEING Fifteen College boys and two staff members completed the Fish River Canoe Marathon held in the holidays in Cradock. College were a dominant force on the podiums in the u18 and u16 age groups. Donovan Wewege, with a Johannesburg partner, secured the u18 victory relatively comfortably ahead of the College boat of Murray Starr and Blaine Beresford. Interestingly enough there was less than a minute separating the two boats at the end of the 48 km first day. Five of the six podium members in the u18 age group were College boys – a truly remarkable achievement. This was extended to the u16 age group where Damon Stamp and Louis Hattingh also managed the gold after trailing fellow College paddler Andrew Woodgate at the end of day 1. Andrew Woodgate and his partner eventually finished second. 1st U18 and 19th overall DJ Wewege and partner 2nd U18 and 22nd overall M Dundass-Starr and partner 3rd U18 and 37th overall M Haw and J Speed 1st U16 and 60th overall D Stamp and L Hattingh 2nd U16 and 63rd overall A Woodgate and partner Other finishers were: C Christie, R Kamhoot, T Maher, G Christie, D Spies, J Baxter, N Muller and M Muller.

ECONOMICS – JSE GAME College had two teams finish in the top five of the JSE Investment Challenge. Genius Investors finished second overall in the Equity game and Super Hero’s in Training finished fourth overall in the same game. Both teams head to JHB for the prize-giving. Well done boys.

ATHLETICS M Masondo, B Smith, J Wewege, J Conradie, M Khanyile and S Sibiya have been selected to represent the Pietermaritzburg and Districts team which will be competing at the annual Grey College / Oranje Meisies Invitation Athletics meeting in Bloemfontein on Saturday, 15th October.

CRICKET Michaelmas Cricket Week 2011 College vs Affies (Goldstones) (Limited to 45 overs) College won the toss and asked Affies to bat first. At the halfway stage of the game, reduced to 45 overs because of a late start, Affies had recovered to 70/2 after Savage and Dupavillon had both taken a wicket within the first 5 overs to have Affies 19/2. After the drinks interval College became very lethargic and untidy in the field and Affies capitalized in no uncertain terms, adding a further 161 runs for the loss of just 4 wickets. After 45 overs they had scored 233/6 with Savage (9-0-31-2) and Dupavillon (9-0-46-2) the pick of a tired College attack. After lunch College started in the worst possible way when pinch-hitter, Berichon, was out in the first over. Rencken looked good but lasted just 12 deliveries for his 9 runs whilst Orr (8 off 8 balls) was out softly to rock the College team back on to their heels with their total on 45/3 after 7,5 overs. Savage joined Harries and they batted College back into contention before Harries (36 off 55 balls) was run out unnecessarily with the total on 77/4 after 18 overs. Miller (0 off 7 balls) came and went very quickly (86/5 after 20, 2 overs), and this brought Guise-Brown to the wicket. He and Savage went about rebuilding the College innings before Guise-Brown (25 off 32 balls) was found wanting attempting a third run! (141/6 after 31 overs). Savage, in the interim had taken his total to 55 off 72 balls but in the 35th over when he was on 77 scored off 86 balls, he holed out with the total on 169/7. His innings had been a dominant one but he been unable to find anyone to help him in the College reply. Glutz (3 off 8 balls) was next out with the total on 172/8 and with the fall of this wicket Dupavillon found himself out in the middle with Charters, and at the end of the 37th over the two umpires pulled the teams from the field with the light having faded terribly towards the end of the day. Simply put, Affies had outbowled, outfielded and outbatted College! Affies 233/6 in 45 overs (C.Savage 2/31; D.Dupavillon 2/46) College 178/8 in 37 overs (C.Savage 77; K.Harries 36) Match drawn –bad light stopped play

vs Grey College(Goldstones)(Limited to 50 overs) Gloomy weather greeted the two teams on Goldstones and College asked Grey to bat first. Savage and Dupavillon, backed up by some much improved fielding by the College XI, pegged the Grey College batsmen back from ball one. Within the first 7 overs Savage had nipped the two Grey openers out (14/2). A third wicket by Savage in the 9th over and Grey were suddenly 21/3. A 24 run fourth wicket partnership gave some respectability to the Grey total before Smith got in on the act to take 3 quick wickets with the total on 45! (45/6 after 16 overs). Guise-Brown at the other end was as tight as ever and he too took a wicket with the total on 48/7 after 16,5 overs! Berichon, behind the stumps had taken two excellent catches to help the cause. Savage came back into the attack and immediately knocked over his SA U19 team mate Dry, sending the off stump cart wheeling backwards in the 23rd over (56/8). The drinks break brought welcome relief to the Grey College XI and after drinks they got their total along to 71/8 after 29 overs before bad light saw the umpires pull the players off the field. An early lunch and a shower of rain put then paid to any further cricket for the day to leave College very much in the driving seat. Savage (10-3-23-4) and Smith (5-0-17-3) had been backed up by Dupavillon (5-2-12-0) and Guise-Brown (8-4-10-1), whilst the College fielding was almost back to its traditionally decent level! Grey College 71/8 after 29 overs (C.Savage 4/23; R.Smith 3/17) Match abandoned – rain stopped play

Kewan Harries

vs Pretoria Boys’ High School(Goldstones)(Limited to 50 overs) Match abandoned without a ball being bowled – rain. vs St Andrews College (Grahamstown) (Harwin A at St Charles) (Limited to 45 overs) Savage won the toss and elected to bat in a game that was moved across town to St Charles due to a waterlogged Goldstones outfield after some heavy overnight rain. Harries and Rencken put on 69 for the first wicket before Rencken (16 off 25 balls) was out in the 13th over. Orr joined Harries and they batted for 24 overs to add 118 runs before Harries was out for an excellent 101 scored off 123 balls (187/2 after 36,2 overs). Savage then got a delivery that reared up off the notorious hump just back of a length on the Harwin pitch to be sent packing for just 2. This brought Glutz to the wicket with just 8 overs remaining and the total on 189/3. Glutz quickly made his intentions clear and scored 20 off 7 balls whilst Orr finished unbeaten on a very valuable 70 scored off 88 balls. Guise-Brown joined Orr and they got the total to 223/4 before Guise-Brown got out for 20 scored off 23 balls. The College total after 45 overs was a very defendable 247/5. After lunch the College attack led by speed twins Savage and Dupavillon pegged St Andrews back with Savage inducing the edge of Rushmere for Berichon to take a regulation catch behind the stumps. In the 6th over Dupavillon was simply too quick for first day centurion Herold, and Rencken took a great catch looking into the afternoon sun.(15/2) Fouche and Smith replaced the openers and by the 17th over St Andrews had been reduced to a total of 52/6, Fouche and Smith each having taken two wickets of their own. Dupavillon came back into the attack in the 25th over and two overs thereafter he had taken 4 more wickets for just the addition of 3 runs against his name. The St Andrews reply came to a grinding halt by the end of the 27th over with their total on a paltry 89, with Dupavillon the pick of the bowlers, his figures reading 5/19 in 7 overs, to give College and convincing 158 run win. Embarrassingly however, some 24 runs of the St Andrews total had been made up of wide deliveries conceded by the dominant College attack! College 247/5 in 45 overs (K.Harries 101; G.Orr 70*) St Andrews 89/10 in 27 overs (D.Dupavillon 5/19) College won by 158 runs
