It commenced with an inspiring Christmas liturgy, celebrated outstanding academic performances and provided entertainment from our talented musicians, dancers, choir and drama performers. It is great to see the growth in the Creave and Performing Arts at the College. It also provided me with the opportunity to reflect on the 2017 school year. This address is included below: On 2nd January 1817 Fr Marcellin Champagnat, a young priest, moved into a house on the edge of the town of La Valla in France. He built some furniture for it himself, and invited two young men to become brothers who could educate and care for the children of the parish. The number of Brothers slowly grew. This year, 200 years later, we are one of 53 Marist schools in Australia who celebrated the life and achievements of St Marcellin Champagnat. It is also a celebraon of a spiritual family, our Marist family. At Penshurst, we also celebrated another Marist milestone, Brother Tony Butler celebrated sixty years as a Marist Brother. Brother Tony, our parents, students and staff see you as a visible presence and authenc witness of the Marist charism and ethos in the Catholic life of our College. Marist Penshurst is part of the Sydney Catholic Schools system of 160 primary and secondary schools. Sydney Catholic Schools has a set of linked processes of review, planning and implementaon designed to enhance the quality and effecveness of Catholic schools within the mission of the Church. Our College undertook this process this year for the first me since 2008. The review team named that: There is clear evidence that Marist Penshurst is implemenng strategies that strengthen the commitment to its Mission and Vision. Families express a sense of welcome to parcipate in the faith life of the College. They idenfy strongly with the Marist charism and express support for its place in the history and tradions of the College. There is strong and mutual interconnecon between wellbeing and learning. A strong learning culture is very apparent in the College. Data is used to idenfy gaps in learning and monitor improvement over me. These comments are affirmaon to the partnership that exists between parents, staff and students. In parcular, I thank all of our teaching and support staff for their dedicaon and hard-work in making our school a place where students feel safe, supported and have so many opportunies. As we began our new year, I challenged you to take up the invitaon of Pope Francis to ‘Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing things, of acng, of living!’ Using St Mary Mackillop who would “never see a need without doing something about it”, Mary our good Mother - the perfect model of the Chrisan faith and St Marcellin Champagnat who was an example of how ordinary people can do extraordinary things, to be our role models. We have had the courage to be: People of peace and hope. People of compassion and tenderness. People of truth and understanding. Awake to the knowledge that Jesus loves us. Not afraid to let our light shine. People who are repairers of bridges and restorers of roads. Driven by a passion to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Let us be authenc people being the best we can be. Awake to the opportunies given to us and awake to the needs of those around us. When I look back we have embraced this challenge and achieved a great deal. When you consider the work you have done with Project Compassion, Marist 180 – bringing 500 pieces of clothing for those less fortunate, Champagnat Day, R U OK Day, Girls Night In, our Stewardship Team and the recycling bins and the St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal. I see a people of peace and hope, people of compassion and tenderness and people driven by a passion to help those less fortunate. I know why Mary MacKillop and St Marcellin Champagnat had and Pope Francis has such confidence in young people to make our world a beer place. Today we have seen examples where students have let their light shine and made the most of the opportunies available to them. We have had a beauful Christmas liturgy, celebrated outstanding academic performances, been entertained by our talented musicians and performers. Being able to be placed first in course in a year group with over 150 students requires ability, talent and a lot of hard work. To achieve an Aspiraonal Award requires students to achieve consistently in all areas in commitment for learning across all subjects. I would like to pass on my hearelt congratulaons to each award winner and their families.

FROM THE PRINCIPALThis week’s Final Assembly celebrated another wonderful year at the College. It commenced with an inspiring Christmas liturgy, celebrated outstanding academic performances and provided entertainment from our talented musicians, dancers, choir and drama performers. It is great to see the growth in the Creative and Performing Arts at the College. It also provided me with the opportunity to reflect on the 2017 school year. This address is included below:

On 2nd January 1817 Fr Marcellin Champagnat, a young priest, moved into a house on the edge of the town of La Valla in France. He built some furniture for it himself, and invited two young men to become brothers who could educate and care for the children of the parish. The number of Brothers slowly grew. Brother Tony, our parents, students and staff see you as a visible presence and authentic witness of the Marist charism and ethos in the Catholic life of our College.

Marist Penshurst is part of the Sydney Catholic Schools system of 160 primary and secondary schools. Sydney Catholic Schools has a set of linked processes of review, planning and implementation designed to enhance the quality and effectiveness of Catholic schools within the mission of the Church. Our College undertook this process this year for the first time since 2008.

The review team named that:• There is clear evidence that Marist Penshurst is implementing strategies that strengthen the commitment to its Mission and Vision.• Families express a sense of welcome to participate in the faith life of the College. They identify strongly with the Marist charism and express support for its place in the history and traditions of the College.• There is strong and mutual interconnection between wellbeing and learning. • A strong learning culture is very apparent in the College. • Data is used to identify gaps in learning and monitor improvement over time.

These comments are affirmation to the partnership that exists between parents, staff and students. In particular, I thank all of our teaching and support staff for their dedication and hard-work in making our school a place where students feel safe, supported and have so many opportunities.

As we began our new year, I challenged you to take up the invitation of Pope Francis to ‘Wake up the world! We have had the courage to be: • People of peace and hope. People of compassion and tenderness. People of truth and understanding.• Awake to the knowledge that Jesus loves us.• Not afraid to let our light shine. People who are repairers of bridges and restorers of roads. • Driven by a passion to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Let us be authentic people being the best we can be.• Awake to the opportunities given to us and awake to the needs of those around us.

As we come to the end of another school year, we have a number of students and staff moving on from Penshurst. I wish each of you the best in your new endeavours. However, it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge a couple of people who have made outstanding contributions to our College.

Firstly, a special thank you to Fr Paul Smithers from Regina Coeli Parish, Beverley Hills for the extraordinary support and spiritual guidance given to our staff and students. His willingness to celebrate with us Eucharist, Sacraments and prayer has enabled the College to give witness to its role within the evangelizing mission of the Church. We wish Fr Paul all the best as he takes up his new role as Parish Priest at Green Square near the city.

To Mr Akkawy who has been the College’s Director of Administration and Pedagogy. Mr Akkawy is a wonderful teacher and the students in Year 12 IPT have really benefited from his wealth of knowledge and experience. He organises each school day. He employs casual staff when teachers are absent, he makes all the room changes, and he makes our school function. However, his passion and probably greatest contribution to the College has been in improving the learning culture of this school. He has arranged professional development for staff, organised our approach to NAPLAN preparation and has been the architect of many of the projects we implement with the Higher School Certificate students. Mr Akkawy thank you for all that you have done and we wish you all the best at your new school – Casimir Catholic College Marrickville.

Finally, to Mr Chris Morris who has been our Assistant Principal for the 2017 school year. Mr Morris, your passion, enthusiasm, energy and drive and wanting the best for the girls, boys and staff at the school has been commendable. I personally thank you for all the support you have given me as Principal of the College. We wish you all the best as you embark on your new adventure in education. Mr Morris is joining a team who are developing a new financial and student welfare program that will be used in all Sydney Catholic Schools. Thank you very much for all that you have done and all the best for the future.

As a community we are working hard to achieve the mission of Marist Schools to lead young people to know and love God in the way of Mary, in the belief that they all can become good Christians and good Citizens. Our young women and men have immense capacity for good. Our ongoing challenge is to embed our Vision for Learning – Aspire to be Inspired into all practices and have it become our culture. We need always to:

• Dream More – Foster a love of deep learning• Do More – Celebrate and work hard together• Learn More – Engage in critical and creative thinking• Become More – Nurture all members of our community.

Have a safe and enjoyable Christmas. God bless.

Mr Ray Martin - College Principal

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPALParents/Carers,

It is with a touch of sadness and a great sense of nostalgia that I pen my last newsletter article for 2017 as Assistant Principal.

A significant measure of a thriving faith and learning community is one of acceptance and love. In my reflections over the last week, I can recall the many ways that I have both been accepted into this wonderful community and felt the sense of family spirit, presence and love that often is demonstrated in challenging and difficult times.

The song, Seasons of Love from the musical ‘RENT’ best captures this; How do you measure, measure a year in a life How about Love, Measure in Love, Seasons of Love

Br Tony Butler fms, the College’s Pastoral Associate and dear friend constantly reminds us that, as Marists, love should always be an enduring and constant that guides our interactions with one another. Marcellin Champagnat lived among children and young people, loved them with passion, and devoted all his energies for them, especially the most vulnerable. It is in our dear friend Br Tony that we have a visible presence of Marcellin’s founding wish. Br Tony, you have been a source of inspiration for me as a Marist leader, and for this, I am truly grateful.

To our students and families, 2017 has consisted of Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes. We have seen over the course of this year students embrace their learning, involve themselves in the ministry life of the College and take steps to improve their social and emotional wellbeing. I want to commend our students for the positive way they have embraced 2017 and thank our parents/carers for entrusting our College to educate your most valuable possession; your son or daughter.

As we prepare for the birth of the Christ, may we remember:

It’s time now to sing out, though the story never ends. Let’s celebrate remember a year in a life of friends

Seasons of LoveFive hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes.Five hundred twenty five thousand moments so dear.five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes. How do you measure,Measure a year?In daylights? In sunsets? In midnights? In cups of coffee? In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife? In five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes. How do you measure a year in a life?

How about love? How about love? How about love?

Measure in love...

Mr Chris Morris - Assistant Principal

Seasons of love...

Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes.Five hundred twenty five thousand journeys to plan.Five hundred twenty five thousand six hundred minutes. How do you measure a life of a woman or a man?In truths that she learned,or in times that he cried? In bridges he burned,or the way that she died? It’s time now to sing out, though the story never ends.Let’s celebrate remember a year in a lifeof friends

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSAUSTRALIAN CATHOLIC YOUTH FESTIVALLast week our Year 10 and 11 students along with many staff members attended the Australian Catholic Youth Festival. The three day festival was a wonderful experience for our young men who engaged in the the plenary sessions, various workshops and the final Mass. Students were able to unite with other young Catholics and celebrate the joy that the faith brings young people today. In his opening address Archbishop Anthony Fisher challenged each young person to be open minded over the next few days and like Mary say ‘YES’ to God’s call. He reminded the young people of Pope Francis’ challenge to the youth at the beginning of the year to “Wake up the world! Be witnesses of a different way of doing things, of acting, of living! It is possible to live differently in this world” (Pope Francis, 2017). Each and every student who attended the festival is to be congratulated on their outstanding engagement with this faith filled experience. A special thank you to Ms Elhage, our Youth Ministry Coordinator who worked extremely hard to make this event such a success for our students.

Mrs Melissa Vassallo - Religious Education Coordinator

THE MARIST WARDROBEMarist 180 is a not-for-profit organisation focused on helping at risk young people, their families, and creating positive change throughout Australia. It forms one of the major arms of the wider Marist community in Australia. They primarily work with young people who have found themselves homeless but also seek to aid other young people who are experiencing difficulty in their lives.

While attending a Marist Connect gathering Year 10 leaders became aware that Marist 180 was asking for our aid in their mission to serve the vulnerable young people in our country and especially in our city. They launched a project called “The Marist Community Wardrobe” with the aim of providing good, suitable clothing for teenagers and young people in the care of Marist 180. Our Year 10 leaders brought this initiative back to the school and Mr Martin challenged every student of MCCP to bring in at least one piece of clothing to show our support of not only our wider Marist community but fellow young people.

I am happy to report that the Marist Wardrobe at MCCP was a terrific success, with an overwhelming amount of clothes kindly donated. These clothes were collected over a number of weeks before Year 10 volunteers and SRC members from Years 8-10 assisted staff in sorting and categorising the clothes. The clothes were then bagged up ready for collection by the staff of Marist Youth Ministry on behalf of Marist 180.

Speaking to members of the Marist Youth Ministry team at the recent Australian Catholic Youth Festival, they wished to pass on their thanks to the entire MCCP community for their generous support of this initiative. They reported they received a huge amount of clothing from across the Marist schools in Sydney, enough to service Marist 180 well into the future.

YEAR 7NURSING HOME VISITSOver the last few weeks the Year 7 RE classes have been visiting the Ferndale Nursing Home as a way of living out the Catholic Social Teachings. Before our visit to the nursing home we explored the 2016-2017 Australian Catholic Bishops social justice statement ‘A place at the table’ which focuses on the importance of building a rapport with the elderly members of our society. Each student made a Christmas card and presented it to each elderly person. Every class prepared a different activity for the elderly people including origami, talent shows, performances and craft activities as a way of entertaining and socialising with the elderly. Thank you to the RE teachers for organising and supporting this wonderful opportunity. Charlotte McGhee - Year 7 Student

GEOGRAPHY - PLACE AND LIVEABILITY For the last few lessons, Year 7 had to design a city that we believe is the most liveable, in other words, our dream place to live. Not only using our knowledge on what we have learned about social connectedness and liveability throughout the term, we were also showing off our technology and craft skills. We could build our city online using games like Minecraft, SimCity or Paradise City, or we could either draw or build a model. We then made a Google Slideshow to present what we had made in more depth.

Overall, everyone did a fantastic job with designing their cities and I definitely wouldn’t mind living there! I’d also like to thank the Year 7 Geography teachers for a fun and educational year.

Naomi Hage - Year 7 Student

Over the past few weeks each homeroom has been collecting a range of items for our Catholic Care and St Vincent de Paul Christmas Hampers. Each homeroom was assigned one specific family and very generously donated a range of items. A special thank you to Mr Varma, Ms ElHage and 7-1 who organised all of the hampers and ensured that we can make a big difference to the lives of these families during this special time of the year. Each and every teacher and student is to be congratulated on the wonderful effort put into the hampers. At our awards ceremony on Tuesday two of our students from 7-1- Charlotte and Lachlan presented Lemis from Catholic Care with one of the 25 hampers as a sign of our ongoing support for those people in need in our community. We continue to keep those people in our lives and community who are struggling at this time of the year in our thoughts and prayers. I would like to share with you an email I received from the Client Support Officer at St Vincent de Paul Society:

Hi Melissa,

We received the wonderful generous donations from Marist College Penshurst this week. I want to send a heartfelt thankyou to you, your staff, parents and children for your generosity in donating to our 2017 Christmas Appeal. The donations we received from Marist College will be made up into Hampers to give out to our most needy clients at this special time of year. For a lot of our clients Christmas is a very difficult time of year. Maris College has helped to brighten their day.

Kindest regards & God bless
