The Statue Veteran
Memorial, created byColorado sculptor A. Thomas Schomberg, icommemoration of the veterans, their comrades,their personal andemotional sacrifices andto acknowledge those Americans who have lostloved ones in the serviceof their country.
The statue consists of a
12-foot pedestal, on top ofwhich lies the lifeless bodyof a soldier partiallycovered with a ponchothat hides the face.
The unidentified soldierwhether a man or woman,private or officer, willforever remain in silenttribute to every American who has given his or her
life in combat.
The statue was donated tothe Riverside NationalCemetery by Thomas F.and Judy Kane and wasdedicated May 28, 2000. The Prisoner War/Missing in ActioMemorial was designated aNational Memorial by theU.S. Congress anddedicated Sept. 16, 2005.
A bronze statue, sculptedby Vietnam veteran LewisLee Millett, Jr. is theimage of an Americanserviceman on his kneesand bound by his captors.
The statue is surroundedby black marble pillarsrepresentingimprisonment.
Riverside National Cemetery
At 921 acres, Riverside NationalCemetery in Riverside, Californiais the third-largest cemeterymanaged by the NationalCemetery Administration, andsince 2000 has been the mostactive in the system based onthe number of interments.
It was established in 1976through the transfer of 740acres from March Air Force Base,a section that during World WarII was called Camp William G.Haan. During WWII, Camp Haanwas used as a training base forcoast artillery and anti-aircraftand also housed a prisoner-of- war camp for captured Italiansoldiers.
The site was selected in 1976 toprovide full burial options forSouthern California veterans
and their families by PresidentFords Commission for NationalCemeteries and Monuments.The cemetery was dedicated andopened for burials Nov. 11,1978. An additional 181 acres was transferred by the U.S. AirForce in 2003.

speaker, RNC was dedicated andopened for burials Veterans Day,Nov. 11, 1978. RNCs first burial
was Army Staff Sgt. Ysmael Villegas, who was awarded theMedal of Honor for bravery atthe cost of his own life at Villa Verde Trail on the island ofLuzon in the Philippines, March20, 1945.

He was originally buried on
Luzon, but was later transferredto Olivewood Cemetery in hishometown of Riverside, Calif.
Prior to the opening of RNC the Veterans Administration askedthe Villegas family if he couldbe moved again and be honoredby burial in the new NationalCemetery.
The dramatic, meanderinglandscape features a central
boulevard with memorial circles,lakes, indigenous-styledcommittal shelters, and amemorial amphitheater.
The Medal of Honor Memorial, whose walls feature the namesof all medal recipients, islocated at the third traffic circlein the cemetery. It wasdedicated at a ceremonyattended by 85 Medal of Honor
recipients November 5, 1999. ->
