Greetings to all Detachment Marines, Associates, FMF Corpsmen and Guests; I'm sorry I missed our June

meeting. My wife and I were in New Orleans celebrating her retirement. While there the devastating fire in the Black Forest affected two of our members and I am glad that John and the Gunny escaped “relatively” unscathed. Upcoming events: the 4th of July parade in Monument begins at 1000 hours but line-up, transportation and staging begins at 0730. Roger forwarded out via email the information for the 4th of July Parade at Monument. We are number 18, we line up on old Denver Road (get off at Baptist Road) or

Jay Bennett and Glen McMullan have prepared

NEW trucks for the Parade

park at the Walgreens and walk to where we are staged (Mark Davis has cleared this for us). We are asked to have vehicles at the staging area by 0730. We are meeting at the Coffee Cup Café in Monument (251 Front St. 719-488-0663) at 6:00 am for breakfast. The parade begins at 1000. Organizers are asking that we throw nothing from our vehicles. Remember to bring sunblock and water as it will be warm. Call Garry

and let him know if you plan on participating! We would like to have everyone in place by 0930. I have sent our application in for the American Veterans Bike Rally to be held in Cripple Creek August 16-18. We will be setting up for cash sales during the event. Later events upcoming include the Labor Day parade and cash sales Fountain and Metcalfe Park on September 2. More details on these and other events will be shared very soon. Enjoy your hot summer and hope for rain. I'll see everyone on July 20th at our scheduled meeting.

The Bereavement Team has again been busy during the Month of June. Five funerals and memorial services as of 28 June with one more

scheduled for 30 June as of this writing. Sadly Marines Shirley Coston, Joe Weiss, Roland Kaup, Oscar Arend, Pat O'Rourke, and George Rosental have passed. Thanks to all Bereavement Team members who were able to attend these services. Please remember those who have lost family members and friends, or are undergoing other problems such as illness, or the consequences of the devastating Waldo Canyon and Black Forest fires. A quick call to see if anyone needs help or just a friendly word goes a long way in keeping us connected. Lord, hold our troops in your loving hands. Protect them as they protect us. Bless them and their families for the selfless acts they perform for us in our time of need. Amen. When you read this, please stop for a moment and say a prayer for our ground troops in Afghanistan, sailors on ships, and airmen in the air, and for those in Iraq, Afghanistan and all foreign countries. Of all the gifts you could give a US Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine, and Coast Guardsman, prayer is the very best one.

Regular Members: I would like to clarify “a delinquent member status:” per National Bylaws Section 620, a member

shall be identified as delinquent whenever the member's dues are not paid and transmitted on or before membership expiration date as shown on the member's card. If a member's dues expire, the member is carried on the roles for one year. During that year if a member wants to bring their membership up-to-date they must pay the renewal fee ($36.00) and the expiration date will be one year later than their current expiration date. If the member waits until after the one year period they will be dropped off the roster and then must pay a new member fee ($36.00) and they will be given a new expiration date. Life Members: regular or associate members of the MCL who are in good standing may become a Life Member upon proper payment of the fee as is required herein. This means that the person applying for Life Membership must already be a member of the league.

Their dues must be up-to-date. This is per National Bylaws Section 645. Once a month the paymaster sends off a transmittal; if you pay after your expiration date you will be considered delinquent. Please ensure that you pay on time the amount of $36 per year. If you don't know when your dues are due or you have problems receiving the magazine, please send me an e-mail or contact me at the meeting. One more thing, I request everyone pay their dues thru me because I keep records and it takes about 3-4 months for National to send reply back.

New Member Dues - $36.00 Renewal dues $36.00

Think about becoming a Life Member!!!

Life Membership Costs: Age 35 - below - $500.00

36 – 50 - $400.00 51 – 60 - $300.00 61 & over - $150.00 Please send your membership dues (annual renewal) to the Pikes Peak Detachment address (top of the newsletter). Thanks.

Vice Commandant, Steve Swartz and Judge Advocate, Joe V. Martinez Jr. were absent.

Minutes of Last Meeting: Commandant Gibson made a motion to accept the minutes of the last meeting. The motion was seconded by Member Joe Martinez Jr., a vote was taken, and the motion carried.

Guests: Kenneth Armatraden was in the Marine Corps from 1979-1985, where he had a varied career: 12th Marines, 3rd MARDIV in Okinawa, JA; supply; motor-T; and chaser/bailiff to name a few specialties. He is looking for work if it is available. He was welcomed by the detachment.

Ken Armatraden talks about his time in the Corps

Pay Master: Pay Master, Heike Cummins provided a summary of accounts; she will provide a copy of the report if requested.

New Correspondence: None. Report of Officers Senior Vice: In the absence of Senior Vice Swartz,

Commandant Gibson stated he would check on the specifics about the 4th of July parade.

Junior Vice: Nothing new to report. Pay Master: Nothing additional to report. Adjutant: Nothing new to report. Chaplain: Chaplain, James Carty had no

information of any members sick or in distress, but he did thank the Bereavement Committee and other Detachment members for attending funerals to include that of our own Shirley Coston.

Quartermaster: Quartermaster Gibson stated the Detachment did well with cash sales at Territory Days to fund continued support activities. A discussion ensued as a result of the Black Forest fire, as to whether the Quartermaster should seek a release of liability or obtain insurance for inventory. Expansion of current homeowner’s policy and use of bonded storage facility were suggestions. Web Master Roger Baty made a motion that the Quartermaster check on available

policies; preferably one that gives flexibility to store inventory at home if it can be found. Member Joe Martinez Jr. seconded the motion, and by unanimous vote, the motion was carried.

Special Committees: Former Commandant Jim Woods announced the Pikes Peak Detachment Scholarship was awarded to Blanford Boston. Adjutant Terry Boston thanked the Detachment for granting her son this honor. Member George Griego inquired about the possibility of obtaining scholarship funds from Department and asked if Commandant Gibson would bring this up at the next Department meeting? Commandant Gibson replied that, as we do not donate funds to Department for the scholarship (as we have our Detachment scholarship) we are not eligible for Department scholarship funds. Ultimately, discussion regarding future funding of the Detachment scholarship resulted in Commandant Gibson making a motion to transfer $500 to the Detachment scholarship account from the General Fund. Motion was carried.

June Meeting

Unfinished Business: A concealed carry class was held at TREA on 10 June 2013. There is a onetime registration fee of $5.00. The three remaining class will be offered on the following Mondays; June 24th, 1 July, the last class will be held on Monday 8 July. If you missed the first class you may catch up by attending the Monday 15 July class, all classes start at 18:30.

Good of the League Member George Griego made the following

comments: The Flag Day Flag Retirement Ceremony at TREA was a worthy cause; no one else in the area offers this service. He made a motion that this is to become an annual event for the Detachment. Commandant Gibson will add this event to the Detachment event schedule. Young Marines should aspire to attend the Marine Military Academy as an educational option. He inquired

about approaching Department about pursuing a means to aid in this. Commandant Gibson deferred discussion until later. Gunny Jackson, Commandant of the Pikes Peak Young Marines, stated that the Young Marines organization was started in 1959. In 1995 there were 13 drug reduction programs. Today, there is only one associated with the Young Marines. The Director, DEA sits on the Young Marines Board and he is assisting in the pursuit of congressional recognition for the program.

New Business: Skyline Detachment has been dissolved. Four notices of deaths within that Detachment will be forwarded to Department.

Awards: Commandant Gibson presented the following award Certificates; The Department Meritorious Unit Commendation Award was presented to the Detachment for the work our Bereavement Committee has done during the past several years (over 110 funerals attended since

2010); Distinguished Citizen “Silver” award Certificates were presented to our Web Master Roger Baty, longtime member Doris Purdy, past Department/Detachment Chaplain Kaz Mueller and Commandant Garry Gibson; Distinguished Citizen “Bronze” award Certificate was presented to Kaz Mueller; Commandant Gibson was also presented the 2012/2013 Department of Colorado Recruiter’s Award Certificate. Note: If you would like to know what these members did to earn these awards please review last month’s newsletter for details.

is “Salute to Veterans Bike Rally.” This is one of the biggest Bike Rally’s held in the United States each year. This yearly event will be held in Cripple Creek from Friday 16 August thru Sunday 18 August 2013. To be within walking distance of our cash sales tent site (10 minutes), I will camp out with Joe G. Martinez at the Heritage House Camp Grounds in his 1950’s vintage Air Stream trailer. I hope to schedule a cash sales event at one of the local gun shows sometime in July 2013. I will keep you posted as I gather more information.

Cripple Creek 2011

This Month in History Dates of Marine Corps Historical Significance

4 July 1801: President Thomas Jefferson reviewed the Marines, led by the Commandant of the Marine Corps, LtCol William W. Burrows and the Marine Band, on the White House grounds. The smartly uniformed Marines performed drills and fired various salutes in observance of the new nation's 25th anniversary. 6 July 1990: One of the oldest and most versatile attack aircraft in Marine Corps history, the A-4 Skyhawk, retired from the Corps' active aviation structure after over 30 years of service. The last two Skyhawks from MAG-32 flew their initial flight from Cherry Point to NAS Patuxent River on this date. 7 July 1941: The 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW) was activated at Quantico, Virginia. Within a year of activation, the Wing would participate in the Marine Corps offensive at Guadalcanal. That bitter campaign would be the first in a series of legendary battles in which the Wing would add luster to its reputation. The 1st MAW would earn five Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry in campaigns spanning World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.

11 July 1798: President John Adams approved "An Act for Establishing and Organizing a Marine Corps", and it became law. The following day, the President appointed William Ward Burrows the Major Commandant of the new Corps. In August, Major Burrows opened his headquarters in Philadelphia, at that time still the capital of the new nation. 14 July 1993: The USS Iwo Jima was decommissioned after over 30 years of service in a ceremony at Norfolk Naval Base, Virginia. The ship was named for the World War II battle during which three Marine divisions ousted 20,000 entrenched Japanese troops. The Iwo Jima was commissioned 26 August 1961, it was the first ship specifically designed as an amphibious assault ship from the keel up. 18 July 1918: The 4th Brigade of Marines began an attack near Soissons, France, as part of a three-division counterattack against the Germans. In the first two days of battle, the brigade sustained 1,972 casualties. 24 July 1944: The V Amphibious Corps, commanded by Major General Harry Schmidt, landed on Tinian, in the Mariana Islands. The following morning, the 2d and 4th Marine Divisions began a shoulder-to-shoulder southward sweep of the island. Organized enemy resistance faded within a week, and on 1 August, MajGen Schmidt declared the island secure. 26 July 1947: The National Security Act of 1947 became effective, reaffirming the status of the Marine Corps as a separate military service within the Department of the Navy. The Act provided for Fleet Marine Forces, and confirmed the Corps' mission of seizing and defending advanced bases, as well as land operation incident to naval campaigns. 28 July 1918: Brigadier General John A. Lejeune assumed command of the 2d Division, U.S. Army in France, and remained in that capacity until August 1919 when the unit was demobilized. He was the first Marine officer to hold an Army divisional command, and following the Armistice, he led his division in the march into Germany.
