  • Dropped object hazardsDropped objects hazards are items that fall or have the potential to fall from height due to static and dynamic forces. Fixtures (lights, CCTV cameras, speakers etc.), handheld devices, unsecured equipment, tools, consumables and structural components are all recognised hazards.

A wide range of factors can contribute to dropped objects:

    • Corrosion in marine environments

    • Inadequate installation and maintenance

    • Dynamic movement of vessels and equipment

    • Impact by operating equipment (cranes)

    • Human error

    • Environmental factors such as wind and gravity

    • Unsecured tools and equipment used at height

    • Limited scheduled inspections until yard time

Dropped and falling objects can result in fatalities or serious disabling injuries of personnel in or near the impact zone, as well as damage to critical equipment, with negative consequences.

    3

  • In the Marine Industry:

26% of reported LTIs were caused by persons being struck by moving or falling objects. This has been an increasing trend since 2011.*

  • Dropsafe prevents potentially serious incident during crane operations.

During lifting operations the load unexpectedly swung hitting a floodlight above the work floor, breaking the light support.

A previously installed Dropsafe Net securely retained the light – preventing a potentially serious incident.

    Best practice recommendations

We strongly recommend you use Dropsafe Nets as your primary method of secondary securing over sling-based securing methods. Dropsafe Nets fully enclose and tether the fixture and fixture components and are 3rd party rated to a high SWL, versus the unknown SWL’s and more importantly the inability of slings to provide an integral securing solution.

Check the Dropsafe Product Guide for information on Dropsafe Nets for securing fixtures at height.

Adhere to the following when using Dropsafe accessories: • Only use securing cables for fixtures where the manufacturer has built in attachment points

    specifically designed for secondary securing

    • Due to dynamic load risk the fixture manufacturer’s secondary attachment points must withstand 5 X SWL

    • Do not exceed the SWL’s of Dropsafe accessories

    • Never reuse any accessories after shock loading, signs of wear or degradation

    • For D-shackles ensure shackle pins are properly bent to prevent them from coming out
