The Pantry is now serving 25-35 families a week, Nor-ma and I will soon become permanent fixtures at Aldis! Where we used to go once a month, we will probably have to start going every two weeks. Church Council

During the Trustee Report, it was men-

tioned that Corky Stark and Warren Shaw

took a look at the Narthex doors and decid-

ed they could weather proof them, rather

than get new doors. It was also stated that it

had been decided to keep the dishwasher

and get the electrical up to code. But, there

was a concern that the people that work in

the kitchen be asked what they want. To

come to a decision and to keep everyone

happy, an ad=hoc committee will be set up

and this committee should decide what they

want and then present their ideas to the

Trustees. Sheila Reidy and Janet Taylor

have agreed to take over the Christmas

Child boxes from Carol Hague. Even

though Carol isn’t sitting at her toll booth,

she will gladly accept your quarters to go

for postage for the boxes. The Avon Meth-

odist Church has offered to do 6 free com-

munity meals a year and it was voted to ac-

cept this generous offer. We have no dates

set yet but keep an eye open for the next

one. The Annual Charge Conference is set

for November 11th and will be held at the

Torrington Methodist Church from 2:00 -

3:00, please mark your calendars. The date

for the Winsted Fall Festival will be Septem-

ber 29th and we will again have our pie ta-

ble in front of the Health Food Store at the

corners of Main and Elm Streets. Set that

date and everyone that can make pies or

help with setting up, selling, and taking

down there will be a signup sheet in the So-

cial Hall. This year there is no charge for

Winsted businesses or organizations so

what we make will be pure profit. Remem-

ber, you can attend any meeting of Church

TAG SALE Thanks to all that helped with the tag sale. We certainly had a beautiful day and got rid of a lot of stuff. We made $229.00, which isn’t a huge profit, but every little bit helps. THANKS. John, Sandy Issy

FALL FESTIVAL Sept. 29, 2018

This is an Annual Main Street Event with crafters and vendors and live music, a true coming together of the community. The Winsted United Methodist Church will be found with a our pie table at the corners of Elm and Main Streets. There will be a sign up sheet in the Social Room for anyone that wants to help. We will need people to load the tables and gazebo and set up on Main Street and then people will be needed to sell the pies, and then take everything down. Most importantly we are looking for Pie Bakers, last year we sold all but 1 pie. Apparently Winsted loves

Methodist Pies.

This is a great opportunity to be visible in the Community.

Our Church in Mission

During the Tag Sale Patty, Corky and Terry Stark sold Hot Dogs, Plants and Craft items to benefit the Floor Relief in Ellicott City. This is the city that Pastor Florence retired to, they suffered the same type of flooding as Winsted did 60 years ago. The proceeds of the sale was $200.50 the mission fund matched the amount and $401.00 was sent to UMCOR on

behalf of the flood relief.

THE BAT COLUMN Where does the time go? It seems like just yesterday I was waiting for summer and lots of bugs and now I’m hearing talk about Thanksgiving and Christmas! I overheard Candy tell Church Council that she wants to put on a free

community dinner on Thanksgiving and one on Christmas. The meals will be available to any and all that can’t make it home to their family or have no family to celebrate with. That makes sense to me, if you can’t be with your blood family why not be with your church family. I’ve pretty much gotten use to the happenings around here. Issy working inside, John working outside, Candy, Stephanie & Jo Elin working in the kitchen, Norma Jarvis, John and Sandy, working

in the Thrift Store, Sue coming in and paying bills, Norma Jones and Gail bringing in the mail - these are all the normal monthly happenings. I had a bats eye view of Jerry and Heidi’s wedding, the table was beautiful, the flowers were beautiful, congratulations to you both. John has been busy working outside on the sidewalk. He has been hauling, mixing and pouring cement, pulling weeds, and tying off the sidewalk and boy does it look great. Both Jo Elin and John have picked up food from the Soup Kitchen and brought it in for all you humans to share. The tables in the Social Room have been filled a lot this month between what came in from the Soup Kitchen, Stop & Shop and what your Farmer John has brought in from his garden. Then one day in came Sheila and Janet carrying cleaning supplies, mops, brooms - hey, what are they going to do? I followed them around to see what was happening and lo and behold, they came to clean the bathrooms and what a job they did! I don’t know about them, but I was exhausted by the time they left. I always know when a dinner is going to happen, after Bible Study, the crew goes downstairs to set table and do preparation work on the food. The next day in came the kitchen crew and got to work. Friday night the game people came in and had a lot of fun playing games and Sandy came in with balloons. Okay, the big question here is what are the balloons for? Saturday morning bright and early in came Corky, John, Sandy, Gail, Sheila, Janet and Issy. Everyone was carrying out

table and boxes - all except Issy, she was busy making her coffee and fixing signs. Then Sandy tied the balloons on the signs and took them outside, aha, we are having a tag sale. From my belfry I watched people come and people go and people eating and drinking. I must say hot dogs smell very good! Then everything was carried back inside and one by one, people went home. And there I was once again all alone in my belfry - oh, don’t let me kid you I love the quiet and

solitude and being able to fly all over the church. Before I close, I want to say Brava to Mary Pat for the beautiful music she has been playing and especially for the solo she did on one Sunday. What a talent. And lastly, no more early mornings - I am a night bat. The Bat

Historian’s Notes

I received a call from church secretary, Issy Skilton,

on 19 July 2018 informing me that the New York

Annual Conference had awarded our church a

$200.00 grant to help archive church records. The

church must match the monies from Conference, in

order to accept the grant. Some of us have already

begun collecting various records from around the

church and placing them in one accessible area to

work on. When it gets a little cooler, we will start up

again.

Trustees Corner: September 2018

Narthex progress: Electrical- junction boxes have been

installed in two spots, two more to go. R & M Insulation

has been called to see if they want to do the “dense

foam” insulation inside the narthex. This should keep

water out if it ever decides to spring another leak. After

that, the plaster can be installed. Corky & Warren have

agreed to upgrade the doors.

Kitchen: Dish washer disposition still in limbo.

Lighting needing upgrades or new bulbs: Vestibule; La-

dies Room, Men’s Room; Youth Room.

Chancel has been rail repaired. Don’t lean or pull on it.

A stewardship thought.

I am your treasure, I am immeasurably more

valuable than anything you can see, hear

or touch. Knowing me is the prize above

every other prize.

Earthly treasures as frequently hoarded,

insured, worried over, or hidden for

safekeeping. But the riches you in me can

never be lost or stolen or damaged. On

the contrary, as you freely share Me and

others, you gain more of Me. Since I am

infinite, there will always be more of me

to discover – and to love. Your world

often feels fragmented, with countless

things – both large and small – vying for

your attention. So much “stuff” keeps

getting in the way of enjoying My

presence. You are worried and troubled

about many things, but only one thing is

needed. When you make me that one thing,

you choose what will never be taken away

from you. Rejoice in My continual

nearness and let your knowledge of Me put

everything else in perspective. I am the

The Staff/Parish Relations Committee wants to invite you to our church’s Installation of new Pastor and Homecoming event on October 13, 2018, starting at 11:00 a.m. It is to be a gathering for all persons who have made this church their home now or in the past It is a sincere invitation to all past and present members to come to explore what we have to offer, to walk the path to God with our congregation.

The service and luncheon are also meant to help with transitioning our new pastor. We came to know Adeline Hazzard as the person Rev. Florence Eddins mentored. But Pastor Adeline has a vision of her own to bring to the church. She is dedicated, hard-working, and committed to our best interests. We owe it to our congregation and the community to walk with her on the road she envisions, bringing our own ideas to the table and work to rebuild our inclusive community, bringing in additional members and welcoming back those we miss. We will also be inviting residents at the YMCA and group homes in the community as part of our mission.

Our church is in the enviable position to be ready for growth. We can achieve this by working with God’s love and direction. We have the ability to build the church by being members of service and commitment. We can bring a fresh attitude to the way we manifest our love for God and Jesus by letting the Holy Spirit work within us.

Come on October 13 with an open mind and a hearty appetite.
