July 8, 2019 Dear Marie Reed Families, Happy summer! Although the last school-year just ended, we are already planning and preparing for your children to return to Marie Reed for school-year 2019-2020. Updated, printed copies of the Parent Handbook for 2019-2020 will be available in August. Until then, please review last year’s handbook on our website: www.mariereedes.org under “Parents/Parent Involvement.” Additionally, please carefully review all the items in this mailing, and keep in mind the following important notes! Getting to Know You: At Marie Reed, we believe it is our responsibility to build trusting relationships with all families so we can best serve your children and help them learn, grow, and develop. For us, the relationship-building process begins with a home visit with each family. Last year, 83% of our families participated in a home visit, and this year we’re striving for 100%! Between now and September, you should expect to hear from your child’s teacher to arrange to meet you at your home (or another location, if you prefer) and learn about your hopes and dreams for your child. Student Transition Days: The first days of a new school-year can be exhilarating, nerve-wracking, and downright scary for many students. As parents, we may find ourselves experiencing many of these same emotions when we drop our children off in someone else’s care! I am a parent myself, so I know from personal experience that it can be hard to say goodbye and trust that our kids will be okay, especially when they are crying or expressing fear. To support our students’ transition to the routines of the school-day and classroom, however, we ask for families to say goodbye at drop-off and allow our teachers and staff to welcome the children and help them create a community among their peers and acclimate to the routines of the classroom. For our youngest students (PK3 and PK4), we have built in two transition days (August 29 and 30), during which families can walk in to the classrooms and remain during morning breakfast, saying goodbye by 9:15am. Beginning September 3, we ask our PK families to say goodbye on the playground by 8:40am when the teachers pick up their classes. Once students are acclimated to the routine, there will be plenty of opportunities for families to be involved in the classroom on special occasions and at other times arranged with the teacher, for example reading a book or teaching the class about a cultural event. Additionally, teachers will keep you posted on the fun activities happening in class via our Remind communication plattorm – be sure to ask your teacher how to sign up! For our Kindergarten students, families are welcome to walk their children to the classrooms, have breakfast in the classroom, and say goodbye by 9:00am on the first day of school (August 26). Beginning August 27, we ask our Kindergarten families to say goodbye on the playground by 8:40am when the teachers pick up their classes.

For our 1st-5th grade students, we welcome families to join their children in the cafeteria for breakfast and then walk up to the classroom with the teacher on the first day of school (August 26). We ask families to say goodbye by 9:00am when the students have gotten settled in their classrooms. Beginning August 27, we ask our 1st-5th grade families to say goodbye at the cafeteria upon drop-off between 8:00 and 8:40am. May 28, 2019 Dear Marie Reed Families, At Marie Reed, we are constantly reflecting, refining, and improving so that we can better support students and families. As principal it is my responsibility to ensure that our systems work to support each child’s success and make every family feel a sense of welcome and belonging. Families at our school identify as: 57% Hispanic/Latino, 16% Caucasian, 15% African-American, 7% Asian, 4% Multi-racial/other. In such a diverse community as ours, it can sometimes be difficult to ensure that the many different values, perspectives, and contributions of each family are heard and appreciated. Since January, I have been working with parents and teachers to restructure our PTO so that it can be more accessible and inclusive of families and teachers. Our PTO was founded in 2013 as a small group of parents and staff and since then has expanded to include as many as 30 active parents and provided so much support to our school. The PTO has sponsored countless community-building events such as Movie Nights, Fall Festival, and International Night, as well as raised tens of thousands of dollars in support of school programming such as field trips, Food Prints, after-school programs, summer camp, and more. The next phase of our PTO seeks to include more families and teachers by providing smaller, more bite-sized opportunities for families to engage in efforts that benefit students and families. The newly restructured PTO consists of six “hubs” that have a particular focus, including: Academic Supports, Fundraising/Finance, Inclusive & Welcoming Community, Social & Emotional Well-Being, Parent Learning, and Physical Needs. We invite all families to consider which hub is most interesting to you, where you have a passion or skillset, and join now via our website or with our parent coordinator! You do not have to attend a monthly evening meeting and you do not need to speak English to participate. There will be three coordinators of each hub, including 2 parents and at least 1 teacher or staff member, and many additional volunteers. We are seeking coordinators to include at least one Spanish-speaking person and one person that reflects our diverse community. Over the next few weeks, the PTO leaders will gather together and decide what will be the best way to communicate their goals and projects to one another and the broader community. Como director es mi responsabilidad asegurar que nuestros sistemas funcionen para apoyar el éxito de cada niño y hacer que cada familia se sienta bienvenida y perteneciente. KATIE LUNDGREN PRINCIPAL

Katie Lundgren is proud to be serving as the Principal of Marie Reed since 2014. She began her career in education in 2002 as a third grade teacher in New Orleans Public Schools and has served as an administrator with DCPS since 2009. Originally from Chattanooga, Tennessee, she earned her BA from Rhodes College in 2002 and her Masters in School Leadership from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2009. She is the proud mama of two boys, Teddy and Alex, who are 3 years and 1 year old. In her free time, she enjoys family time with her husband and boys, going for hikes in Rock Creek Park, traveling to new places, and practicing yoga.

KATHERINE GIRON ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Katherine Girón was born in Puerto Rico and moved to the states while in elementary school. She earned her bachelor’s degree in Physiology and Neurobiology with a minor in Spanish Languages and Cultures from the University of Maryland and her master’s degrees in Teaching from American University and in School Leadership from Johns Hopkins University. This is Ms. Girón’s 13th year with the district where she has served as an assistant principal, instructional coach, testing coordinator, and science teacher. She is currently a member of DCPS’s inaugural Leadership and Innovation Cohort in partnership with Georgetown University McDonough School of Business and is looking forward to continuing to serve Marie Reed’s students, families, and community this year! In her spare time, she enjoys painting, reading, and spending time with her family and two pups.

BRITTANY PATRICK MANAGER OF SPECIALIZED INSTRUCTION

Ms. Patrick began her journey in education as a Capital Teaching Resident, special education teacher, and RTI coordinator with KIPP DC. She has also served as a founding teacher at Bonnie Ellison Elementary in San Antonio, TX. Ms. Patrick earned her Bachelors in Speech-Language Pathology from North Carolina A&T State University and later went on to receive a M.S.Ed. in Special Education. She is currently pursuing her PhD in Special Education at the University of Maryland- College Park. Ms. Patrick is a Prince George's county native, a former NFL cheerleader, and an avid Women's flag and tackle football fan. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, and spoiling her dog; TJ.

VIRGINIA MONTOYA-CRUZ, REGISTRAR

Before coming to Marie Reed ES, Virginia Montoya worked as a pre-school teacher, teaching Spanish in the Garden Family Care Center. At Marie Reed, Ms. Montoya became involved in the activities of the school under the administration of Dr. Sparrow. After working as a paraprofessional, she started working in the registration office to help the parents, teachers and community. Ms. Montoya is also a grandmother and aunt to some of the students of Marie Reed. One of her many strengths is her bilingual customer services skills, which helps her to work effectively with diverse populations, answer questions from students, teachers, parents, and visitors of Marie Reed. “Being an employee of DCPS and a member of the Marie Reed ES community is one of the best things that has happened in my life!”-Virginia Montoya

BRITTANY PATRICK GERENTE DE INSTRUCCIÓN ESPECIALIZADA

La Sra. Patrick comenzó su carrera en la educación como residente de Capital Teaching, maestra de educación especial y coordinadora de RTI con KIPP DC. PHALLON LATTIMORE DIRECTOR OF STRATEGY & LOGISTICS

A native Washingtonian, Phallon Lattimore is the second of three generations in her family to attend DC Public Schools. As a child she attended Amidon ES, Jefferson MS and Duke Ellington School of the Arts. After graduating Howard University in 2008, Ms. Lattimore returned to DCPS to begin her career in Education. Starting out as an Afterschool Coordinator at Sousa Middle School and School Without Walls, she soon transitioned to Marie Reed ES, where she currently serves as the DSL. In 2015 Ms. Lattimore was a Standing Ovation recipient and was recognized as the School Staff Member of the Year. Ms. Lattimore is passionate about Education, Organizational Management and Entrepreneurship. In her spare time, she enjoys traveling to new places with crystal clear water and sand, cooking, going on adventurous excursions, running her skincare business and spending time with family.

PATRICIA CAPETILLO PARENT COORDINATOR

ELOISA MORENO ATTENDANCE COUNSELOR

Eloisa Moreno graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in Family Science. She was a Family Assessment worker at Mary’s Center, helping families connect with resources within their community. After 2.5 years she transitioned to Marie Reed ES as Assistant of School Logistics and is excited to start the 2019-2020 school year as the Attendance Counselor. Building connections and being a support to families in our school is a passion for Eloisa. Her goal at Marie Reed is to make families feel welcomed and heard. Eloisa spends her free time with her two very outgoing children, reading and watching movies. She would love to wake up by the ocean everyday but…reality.

Patricia is from the port town of Veracruz, Mexico, which famous for its music, dance, food, and coffee. Paty earned a bachelor’s degree with a major in Communication and soon after began her career in the tourism marketing industry. She promoted Veracruz around the world and occasionally made trips to Washington, DC. In 2007, she accepted a position with Mexican Embassy as a Tourism attaché. Shortly after, however, she married and had two children. This is when creating community in DC, for her multicultural family, became her priority and passion. Paty then obtained her Child Development Associate license, which only increased her enthusiasm for being involved in her children’s school activities, Kindred, as well as the PTO. She is a true believer of building connections with other families regardless language, culture or race, strengths our community but most important develops stronger and empathic children that will care and succeed everywhere. In her free time, Paty loves to spend time her family, volunteering as soccer coach at Marie Reed, hosting friends and family from abroad, and making pizza with her kids on Friday evenings.

Comenzando como Coordinadora de actividades extraescolares en la Escuela Intermedia Sousa y Escuela Sin Muros, pronto hizo la transición a Marie Reed ES, donde actualmente se desempeña como DSL. En 2015, la Sra. Lattimore fue receptora de Ovación Permanente y fue reconocida como miembro del personal escolar del año. A la Sra. Lattimore le apasiona la educación, la gestión organizativa y el espíritu empresarial. En su tiempo libre, le gusta viajar a nuevos lugares con aguas cristalinas y arena, cocinar, realizar excursiones de aventura, dirigir su negocio de cuidado de la piel y pasar tiempo con la familia.

ELOISA MORENO ASESOR DE ASISTENCIA

La Sra. Moreno se graduó de la Universidad de Maryland con un título en Ciencias de la Familia. Fue trabajadora de Evaluación Familiar en Mary’s Center, ayudando a las familias a encontrar recursos dentro de su comunidad. Después de 2.5 años, hizo la transición a Marie Reed ES como Asistente de Logística Escolar y está emocionada de comenzar el año escolar 2019-2020 como Consejera de Asistencia. Crear conexiones y ser un apoyo para las familias en nuestra escuela es una pasión para la Sra. Moreno. Su objetivo en Marie Reed es hacer que las familias se sientan bienvenidas y escuchadas. La Sra. Moreno pasa su tiempo libre con sus dos hijos muy extrovertidos, leyendo y viendo películas. A ella le encantaría despertarse en el océano todos los días, pero ... la realidad.

Sra. Patricia Capetillo Coordinadora de Padres La Sra. Capetillo es del Puerto de Veracruz, México, que es famosa por su música, baile, comida y café. Ella obtuvo su licenciatura en Comunicación y poco después comenzó su carrera en la industria del marketing turístico. Ella promovió a Veracruz alrededor del mundo y ocasionalmente hizo viajes a Washington, DC. En 2007, aceptó un puesto en la Embajada de México como agregada de Turismo. Poco después, se casó y tuvo dos hijos. A partir de ese momento, el crear comunidad en DC para su familia multicultural, se convirtió en su prioridad y pasión. La Sra. Capetillo obtuvo su licencia de Asociada de Desarrollo Infantil, lo que sólo aumentó su entusiasmo por participar en las actividades escolares de sus hijos, Kindred, así como en el PTO. Ella es una verdadera creyente que construir conexiones con otras familias sin importar el idioma, la cultura o la raza, fortalece nuestra comunidad, pero lo más importante es que desarrolla niños más fuertes y empáticos que se preocuparán y triunfarán en todas partes. En su tiempo libre, le encanta pasar tiempo con su familia, ser voluntaria como entrenadora de fútbol en Marie Reed, recibir amigos y familiares del extranjero, y hacer pizza con sus hijos los viernes por la noche.

WALTER CASTILLO AFTERSCHOOL COORDINATOR

Dear Panther Families! My name is Walter Castillo, I am the Afterschool Coordinator for our wonderful school! During my free time I enjoy spending time with my kids and family. I am a huge soccer and basketball fan. One of my favorite things is to travel because I love to expose myself to new cultures. I love working in Marie Reed ES because of its mission, vision and the diversity of our student body. Our school understands that effective after school programs promotes a unique opportunity for students to be exposed to wider enrichment content throughout the school year.

RICHARD PATTERSON DEAN OF STUDENT CULTURE

Mr. Patterson is a native Washingtonian and a proud product of District of Columbia Public Schools. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology within the Behavioral Sciences & Human Services department from Bowie State University in Maryland. Before joining our team, Mr. Patterson managed a Juvenile Detention Center for over eight years and served as both a Dedicated Aide and Behavior Technician within the BES program in DCPS. Most recently, he served as a Resident Manager and was responsible for managing two behavior programs for adults with mental disabilities at Chimes DC. His passion has always been providing youth with appropriate behavioral and social emotional support and he is beyond excited to be rejoining the Marie Reed staff in this new role. Mr. Patterson looks forward to supporting our students with self- regulation, equipping our staff with appropriate techniques for behavior management, and supporting our staff by providing a comprehensive and streamlined approach to school discipline.

El Sr. Patterson es nativo de Washington y un producto orgulloso de las Escuelas Públicas del Distrito de Columbia. BEFORE CARE PROGRAM

Dear Panther Families:

At Marie Reed ES, the Before Care Program is sponsored by the Parent Teacher Organization and will start on September 3rd. We have limited spots and registration is on a first come, first served basis. Please read carefully to see how to register.

About the program: The program is offered daily for PK3-5th graders from 7am-8am in the Legacy Walk (18th Street entrance only) and is facilitated by our staff. Activities include quiet book reading, coloring or peer-to-peer homework help. At 8am, students are dismissed to the playground or indoor recess area to meet up with their class. Please keep in mind that Before Care is not provided on Observed Holidays, School Breaks or days where there is no school for students. Cost: The cost is $40/month for the first child and $35 for each sibling. Accepted payments are: money order or personal check payable to: MARIE REED PTA. Please include the name of your child (ren) in the “memo” line.

How to register? • Enrollment will be on Friday, August 30th at 8:00 am in the living room. • Please bring your form of payment and fill one enrollment form per child on site. • Enrollment forms are going to be handed out starting at 8:00 in the living room. • Remember enrollment forms must be accompanied by the first payment of $40 to be

accepted. • A waiting list will be maintained for any students that do not get a spot.

En la Escuela Primaria Marie Reed, el Programa Antes de Escuela está patrocinado por la Organización de Padres y Maestros y comenzará el 3 de septiembre. Tenemos cupos limitados y la inscripción es por orden de llegada. Por favor, lea atentamente para ver cómo registrarse.
