Saw a need for change in Boyle Heights at an early age.

Maria had no real role model growing up in Boyle Heights.

Pursued a Master Degree in Urban Planning at UCLA.

Three week course in Leadership, the most valuable lesson learned was, if you’re a leader and your not

feeling heat your not leading the right way.

Adaptability Having the foresight to see that change will be

needed in the short and long term .

Being able to create social capital in a changing political and economic environment .

Being able to change leadership style to fit changing environment.

Having the passion and the drive to create East Los Angeles Community Corporation .

Setting achievable goals, and motivating her staff to always remember why they are there and what they are working toward.

Having the ability to passionately motivate others about the possible displacement of Boyle Heights residents.
