1 Scott Avenue
Why is it called Scott Avenue? In 1888… Major General Wesley Merritt directed that Arsenal Avenue, which led from the cantonment around Main Parade to the Fort Leavenworth arsenal on Arsenal Hill, be named after Lt. General Winfield Scott. According to Encyclopedia Britannica, Scott was the foremost American military figure between the Revolution and the Civil War.
Completed in 1861, 1 Scott was constructed as the designated quarters of the commanding officer of Fort Leavenworth Arsenal, after the battle of Wilson’s Creek required the reinforcement of the garrison to prevent further movement of the Confederate Army.

SPRING AND SUMMER REMINDERS!
With spring and summer right around the corner, we have included a few tips to help improve energy efficiency. It is imperative that residents keep the maintenance staff informed of issues and concerns. The more preemptive the approach, the better. Let us know the problem no matter how small. It’s much easier to correct small problems before they evolve into something bigger. When it comes to being efficient and saving money, small issues that are overlooked, will end up costing a lot over time.
HVAC
• Change filters regularly. HVAC filters directly impact indoor air quality and dirty filters lead to higher energy bills. Filters are available for free at the FLFHC Self Help Store.
• Be observant. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, i.e. blower fans running constantly, loud noises from
the outdoor unit, minimal air flow etc., you should alert the maintenance team immediately. These could be indicators of a mechanical problem with the unit, causing irregular amperage, leading to higher power bills.
• Remember to close your curtains and shut your windows on sunny days to keep the sunlight from heating
your home.
Building Envelope • Inspect the quality and functionality of things like windows and doors. Do regular checks on weather stripping
and door sweeps, as well as make sure windows close and lock properly. Leakage around windows will admit warm summer air and will let cooled, indoor air escape.
• Check that any caulking and weather stripping you have in place has remained intact.
Indoor Air Circulation • Remember, hot air rises—so turn your fan on a lower speed to gently push the warm air back towards you.
This will help in cooling warmer air and regulating temperature. Also, the more the air in your home is being moved and circulated, the better the air quality will be (with regular filter changes).
When resetting
your clocks on
March 8th it’s also a
good time to
change batteries in
all smoke &
CO2 detectors.
