A word from
Pastor Mike . . .
Lent is a season of forty days, not
including Sundays, which begins on Ash
Wednesday and ends on Holy Saturday.
Lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word,
lencten, which points to the lengthening
of the days as spring approaches. The
season is a preparation for celebrating
Easter. Historically, Lent began as a pe-
riod of fasting and preparation for bap-
tism for new converts to Christianity.
Later it became a time of reflection and
self-examination for all Christians.
At the heart of our Christian faith
is our participation in the life, suffering,
death, resurrection, ascension and prom-
ised return of Jesus Christ as Lord.
These events are true whether or not I
prepare for Easter. However, without
my heart and life being ready, I may not
experience the depth and power of these
realities. Lent is an intentional, yearly
reminder of the need for the renewal of
our Christian faith. Living in such a
busy age, requires a time to refocus our
thoughts and practices. Surrounded by a
group of Christians who love and en-
courage us, we are able to honestly ex-
amine our motives and actions. The
Cary United Methodist Church family
walks together on this journey each year.
We will begin this journey with our Ash
Wednesday Worship on March 1, at
7:30 pm. We will gather for a time of
prayer and singing, celebrate the Sacra-
ment of Holy Communion and receive
ashes on our foreheads as a sign of our
need of repentance.
As we journey together during
this season of Lent, please make a spe-
cial effort to worship with our church
family each week on Sundays at 8:30 or
11:00. This year, we are also meeting
on four Wednesdays for fellowship and
study from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. We will
gather for a soup and salad supper and
then take some time to study the Bible
together. We will focus on the Scripture
texts that will be used in our worship on
the following Sunday. Our Lenten Fel-
lowship will meet on March 15, 22, 29
and April 5 in Fellowship Hall. All ages
are welcome. Feel free to email or call
me if you would like more information.
May God in Christ, bless you,
Pastor Mike

Celebrating United Methodist Women in Mission:
3rd Annual Day of Giving.
We are celebrating 150 years of love through the Legacy Fund. You are invited to join the party that continues to 2019. We are ensuring our United Methodist Women stay vibrant far in to the future. Consider donating $18.69.
On March 23, 1869, eight women gathered at Tremont Methodist Episcopal Church in Boston, Massachusetts, and organized the Woman's Foreign Missionary Society, the future of United Methodist Women. Those women raised money to send a doctor, Clara Swain, and a teacher, Isabella Thoburn, to India as missionaries to serve the women of that nation. Celebrate the dedication and foresight of our foremothers in mission as we lead up to our 150th anniversary in 2019.
Gifts to the Legacy Fund can be made in several ways:
Phone: 800-278-7771 (8 am-6pm EST, M-F)
Online at: unitedmethodistwomen.org/legacyfund
By check: note "Legacy Fund" in memo and mail to: United Methodist Women: Treasurer's Office

What is Lent? Lent is a forty days season, not counting Sundays, which begins on Ash Wednesday (March 1) and ends on Holy Saturday (April 15). The forty days reminds us of the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan before he began his ministry.
Lent is a time of repentance, fasting and preparation for Easter. In the early church, Lent was a time to prepare new converts for baptism. Today, we focus on our relationship with God, often choosing to give up something or to volunteer and give of ourselves for others.
What’s your plan for this Lent season?
This season of Lent, we invite you to participate in these spiritual disciplines and learning op-portunities!
Ash Wednesday Service Wednesday, March 1, 7:30pm
Ash Wednesday Services have two themes: 1.) our sinfulness before God and 2.) our human mortality. The service helps us realize that Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection triumphed over both! During Ash Wednesday service, pastor Mike and pastor Dan will lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto your forehead. The ash is a sign of mortality and repentance. Spiritual Growth Retreat – Prayer Saturday, March 25, 8:30am – 3:30pm. RSVP by March 14 Barrington UMC 98 Algonquin Rd (Rt. 62) Barrington, IL 60010

$20 per adult (covers morning coffee/light breakfast, catered lunch and program) Child-care: $5.00 per child available. Send registration form by March 14. Forms are availa-ble on the UMW bulletin board. Soup, Salad & Scripture Wednesdays, March 15, 22, 29 & April 5, 6:30 – 7:30pm, Fellowship Hall
All are invited to come and fellowship with us this Lent season with soup, salad and Scripture. After eating together, Pastor Mike will lead us in a discussion of the coming Sunday’s scripture lesson. While children are welcome to stay with their parents, other activities will be available. Childcare will also be provided in the nursery. Easter Egg Hunt and Cookies & Crafts Saturday, April 8, 3- 5pm, Lawn, Fellowship Hall
Join us on the church lawn for a community Easter egg hunt sponsored by the Cary UMC youth! Following the Easter egg hunt, we invite you join with your family to dec-orate Easter cookies and make fun Easter crafts! Don’t forget to bring your own basket! Community Seder Tuesday, April 11, 6:30pm -9pm, RSVP by March 20 McHenry County Jewish Congregation 8617 Ridgefield Rd, Crystal Lake, IL 60012
Rabbi Tom Samuels of the Mchenry County Jewish Congregation in Crystal Lake has invited us to experience an authentic Jewish Passover Meal along with his congregation. Come for a night of meeting our Jewish neighbors, worship and learning. The cost to this event is $5 for each participant. Sign up on the Nurture Board and turn in cost to church office. Palm Sunday Worship Sunday, April 9, 8:30 & 11am
Worship with us as we wave our Palm branches and remember the entry of Jesus into Jerusalem.
7
Maundy Thursday Worship Thursday, April 13, 7:30pm "Maundy" comes from the Latin mandatum, which means "commandment." On Maun-dy Thursday, also known as Holy Thursday, we remember Jesus’ last night before his betrayal and arrest when he washed the feet of his disciples giving them a new com-mandment to love one another as he had loved them (John 13:34). Our worship will in-clude the act of washing of hands. Prayer Vigil Friday, April 14, 12-6pm (Sign up for a time slot in the narthex.) A prayer vigil is when believers gather for a designated length of time to focus on seek-ing God’s will. As we pray, we believe that we can discern God’s specific will for our church, we grow closer to God and to one another in unity. Good Friday Worship (Tenebrae: A Service of Darkness) Friday, April 14, 7:30pm A service of Tenebrae or Darkness originated in the twelfth century and is an extended meditation on the passion of Christ. The sixteen scripture readings that will be read are a translation from the Gospel of John, chapters 18:1 - 19:42, by James H. Charles-worth. Easter Sunday Sunday, April 16, 8:30 and 11am He has risen! The reason Sundays do not count as a part of Lent is because all Sundays are considered to be small Easters. We celebrate Christ’s resurrection every Sunday. Worship with us as we celebrate Christ’s resurrection! Easter Breakfast Sunday, April 16, 9:30-10:30 am Fellowship Hall Come and celebrate Easter morning with breakfast prepared by the United Methodist Men! A free-will offering will be taken. If you have any questions, please contact our office at (847) 639-7627 or by email at [email protected].

Outreach Team
For the months of February and March the Outreach Team will be focusing on the Tree of Life
Ministry. They are a part of the working hands and feet of God to the Lakota Nation residing on
the Rosebud reservation serving body, mind, and soul. They feed, clothe, shelter, and love. They
demonstrate HIS love, power, and grace to a broken, hurting society. Their purposes include:
1. To provide a ministry of service and presence in furtherance of the missions and outreach of
the United Methodist Church.
2. To provide opportunities to raise awareness of Lakota culture and foster relationships with
the Lakota People.
3. To help the most vulnerable members of the community meet their basic human needs in the
Rosebud Lakota Reservation (Sicangu Oyate) and surrounding communities and rural areas.
4. To facilitate communication between various service agencies and organizations as their ac-
tivities pertain to charitable and educational purposes and to encourage community involve-
ment to outreach projects.
If you would like to contribute, you can write a check to CUMC with the #123615 in the memo
line. Also we have “Tree of Life” pendants hand-crafted by Kim Brackett of K B Designs. Each
one is unique. For the cost of $30 you can pick from one of the Trees below. More than 80%
goes towards Tree of Life. Don’t forget Mother’s Day will be here soon! Also, keep an eye out
for news of our 2018 mission trip to Rosebud!

College Care Ministry
We would like to thank everyone who donated items, money for postage, or time assembling the boxes for mailing. Each box contained a hand-made Valentine card with a special Christian message and many treats for them to enjoy.
11 boxes were packed with love, prayed over and were sent out to our college students. These care packages help remind our students that their church family at Cary UMC continues to keep them in our thoughts and prayers.
This year, we expanded our ministry to reach out to our students three times during their school year. In September, they received an inspiration-al book and handmade card. In December, they received a handmade card and a gift card from Starbucks just in time for finals! In February, they received our Valentine care packages. With all of the contact from our congregation, we feel our college students know they are surrounded by our love.

Nurture Team
Vacation Bible School (VBS) Monday, June 19- Friday, June 23 Our Summer VBS is one of the major ways Cary UMC reaches out to the families in our community. Through VBS, children can experience the love of God in fun and experien-tial ways. They even get to participate in missions, helping other children in a different part of the world. Our own youth and adults also have an opportunity to witness to our community through their gifts. Would you like to be a part this great experience? We have plenty of opportunities for you to serve! Check out the "I Can Do This!" sign-up sheet in the attendance books in each pew on Sunday and the Nurture bulletin board. Let us know what you can do to support this very important ministry to our community.
