MESSIAH MESSENGER - MARCH 2016 PAGE 1
Dear Friends of the Crucified and Risen Messiah, HOW IMPORTANT IS FAMILY? Of course, family is important. God uses families to bring life into this world and to nurture children and adults. The book of Genesis is saturated with family sto-ries. They are amazing, sad, unsettling, action packed stories where God is at work despite the esca-pades of the rascals in those families. They are stories which still hold our attention because they remain true to family life. But... NOTICE THE SALVATION STORY FOR GOD'S PEOPLE ISRAEL is NOT a family story. God's sav-ing story for Israel is not in Genesis. It is in the NEXT book, Exodus, where the Lord saved a nation, not just a family. The salvation story for us as Gentile Christians is not in Genesis or Exodus. It is in the NEXT book: the NEW Testament. Yes, we still need families. Yes, God still works through fami-lies. But, God’s GREATEST WORK is now BEYOND what happens in the family. Think about it... GOD'S GRACIOUS WORD IS THE CHURCH'S GIFT TO FAMILIES. Life begins at home. But, without God’s Word life dies there. Families, at our best, carry home God's gifts of forgiveness, faith, hope, and love from Church so God's gifts fill our homes. We need more of God's Word in our

homes. Yet, we are called to take that Word out from our homes into the world. God has something big in the works. God is making a family out of ALL peoples, near and far. THE HOLY SPIRIT IS CALLING, GATHERING, ENLIGHTENING AND SANCTIFYING A PEOPLE. God has a MISSION for us and it cannot be done if we never leave home. God's Spirit takes His mission beyond our homes into the streets, neighborhoods, schools, markets, and work places wherever God sends His people. This month we remember... JESUS' CRUCIFIXION AND RESURRECTION are the most important events in our lives. We are joined to His crucifix ion and resurrection through Baptism as we are adopted into God's family. Our gracious, loving Lord gives us our identity and gives us good work to do. This month let us go back to the foot of the cross to witness again the depths of our Lord's com-passion. And, let us follow Him out of the tomb to the abundant life found only in our Lord and Savior Jesus. Resurrection hope,
Pastor Scott Peterson
Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his
death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was
raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we
have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrec-
tion like his. -Romans 6:3-5

Feed the Need: Lenten Response on Hunger
Messiah has taken the ELCA’s 40 Days of Giving world hunger campaign and broadened it to include campaigning for hunger relief in our community. Our inclusive campaign is named Feed the Need.
The Feed the Need Lenten campaign opened February 7th with the Junior Youth’s “Souper Bowl” Sun-day. $416 dollars were raised to support the ELCA World Hunger program. Jr. & Sr. Youth also participated in World Vision’s 30 Hour Famine Feb 26 - 27.
Feed the Need continues through Lent. Members of MLC are asked to pray daily for those affected by hunger and respond as you are able.
Consider a gift to the ELCA World Hunger program using one of the special pew envelopes, volunteer to shop or pack for the Weekend Food Program (POC Devonee Woods) or give to the Lunches for Learning Kitchen Project, or donate an item for a lo-cal food pantry or for Messiah’s own pantry.
Make a difference in world! Feed the Need.
Time and Talent Surveys
If you completed and returned your 2016 Time and Talent Survey, thank you! The surveys will continue to be collected and entered by the church office as they roll in.

Music Camp June 6 - 10
Music Camp is just three months away! In its 23rd
year, all children K-9th
are welcome to enjoy this week of music, drama, arts & crafts, recreation and fun afternoon activities! This year we will be learning the musical “Lord, Use Me: the Adventures of Francis”. St. Francis of Assisi is well known, particularly for the Prayer of St. Francis and his bond with and love for animals. But did you know, according to legend, he helped a small village with a menacing wolf? Or that he, in fact, visited the Sultan in Egypt in order to have a Muslim/Christian dialog about ending the Crusades? The musical explores how Francis wel-comed being used for God’s purposes and how, through God’s guidance, we can also be instruments of peace in our world today.
The Camp is scheduled for June 6 – 10, with presentations at both worship ser-vices on June 12. Cost is $95 (family plans and scholarships available). Invite your friends! For more information or to help (always welcome!), talk to Lois Graff or email her at [email protected].
