Marden has always been a thriving and friendly club and we plan to take our juniors’ hockey experience to another level in 2017 as we move to our fantastic new ground, opening up multiple opportunities including midweek training for older teenagers alongside senior squads. Last year we entered more competitions than ever, launched our smart new kit, and pioneered a new Marden coaching and playing style - we had the stick skills; now we have the kit to match and the ground is soon to follow!

England Hockey operates the ‘Single System’ which provides junior coaching and competition to supplement school and club hockey, and offers a route
for higher performing players to progress through county to national squads. The entry level is via ‘Development
Centres’ which are run by counties and take place during the Christmas term, typically 11⁄2 hours
on a weekday evening. Many Marden Russets juniors pass the selection trials and benefit from these high level coaching sessions, with some progressing to Performance Centres and beyond.

TEAM PERFORMANCES It was a great season for so many Marden junior teams this year, with fantastic performances across the board, but the winners of the Team of the Year competition were the U10 Boys who were unbeaten all season and went on to cement their position in Kent and the Southern Region,
fending off far larger clubs to finish runners-up at the Regionals. Massive congratulations go to all the
boys, who are exciting prospects for the future.

Marden has been lucky enough to be awarded some great sponsorships by local companies: bespoke furniture makers, John Sankey, have generously sponsored our smart new junior kit; Lambert & Foster and Bloomfields supported our Young Leader scheme; Fenics donated money towards our coaches’ jackets; and Westerhill Homes and Staplehurst Tyres have also made fantastic contributions to our junior section. We are so grateful to them all. If you know of any local sponsorship opportunities please contact Karena Harmer: [email protected].

Marden’s 27 fantastic Young Leaders played a hugely important role in the success of the junior section last season, helping out at more than 300 sessions. With 350 young players to manage, the coaches depend on their commitment and they provide invaluable support, both on a practical level and by inspiring the youngsters to improve and enjoy their hockey. Some of these quotations give a flavour of how much the Young Leaders themselves feel they have benefitted from the experience:
James GoldingIt has helped my confidence and enabled me to give
back to the club for their amazing support over the years. I would recommend it to anyone!
Elspeth ArscottInspiring young hockey players was hugely enjoyable (making up for the early mornings!)
Dom BarberIt was so much fun, giving me lots of opportunities
I wouldn’t have had and teaching me invaluable life
skills. Umpiring matches was challenging but rewarding and improved my knowledge of the sport.
Ed ConnellVery enjoyable and great to watch and help my group improve.
YOUNG LEADERSPurdey DuncanIt was great working with the same group of girls as last year, helping them with their skills and getting to know them.
Sam HuggettA great experience where I became more confident and enjoyed helping the boys develop their skills. They were really enthusiastic and made the job really fun.
Sophia RhodesI have really enjoyed the season and loved seeing them improve their skills – great sports and team players!
Phoebe SharpAfter two years I’m really enjoying watching the girls improve and grow in confidence. It’s also made me think about my own game and develop a greater understanding of the sport.
Cameron SprentIt’s so rewarding – you have the privilege of seeing and helping the juniors to develop into very talented players.
