The company expanded over the next 50 years into log towing, gravel barging, and numerous other services around the Puget Sound. Dunlap Towing Company has expanded over the past nine decades from a small three-tug business towing grain scows and logs to a fleet of vessels operating along the Pacific Coast and throughout the Pacific Ocean. They regularly tow to Honolulu, Hawaii and have been navigating the waters of Western Alaska for over 35 years delivering barges to remote villages above the Arctic Circle. Island Tug and Barge hauls more bulk commodities such as crushed rock, dredge spoils, or gypsum than anyone on Puget Sound. The company is a family owned and operated company based in Seattle Washington with over 35 years of experience working the waters of Puget Sound, Alaska and beyond. Marcon acted as sole broker in the sale and has represented Buyers in dozens of sales and purchases, plus worked with Dunlap for many years and sold their 3,000HP tug “Suiattle” earlier this year. Marcon International, Inc. Sale & Charter Report – 2015

www.marcon.com Celebrating 34 years as a broker from 1981 to 2015.

Marcon International, Inc. is pleased to announce the sale of the purpose built survey vessel "New Horizon" from Scripps Institute of Oceanography to private interests. The 170' loa x 36' beam x 15' depth / 12.76' loaded draft "New Horizon" was specially built as a dedicated oceanographic research ship for Scripps, whose research vessels and research platform make up one of the largest academic fleets in the world. “New Horizon's” design originated in a study made in 1965 to develop specifications for a new class of research ships to replace the aging R/V “Horizon”, the 143’, 1944 built former Auxiliary Fleet Tug “ATA-180” and other converted ships used in oceanographic research. The plans included many innovative features such as use of a shallow-draft broad-beam workboat hull with house forward with modifications of form for better "sea-kindliness", careful design to keep admeasured tonnage below 300 tons, provision of standardized bolt-down fittings at 2-foot spacing on deck and within lab spaces, provision for "portability" of deck

equipment, and use of standard ISO vans for additional lab spaces, living spaces, explosives magazines, and deck equipment. The contract to build New Horizon was awarded to Atlantic Marine, Inc., of Fort George Island, Florida in 1977. The $4 million ship was completed in October 1978 in time to join the Scripps fleet during the year of the institution's 75th anniversary. Over the years, “New Horizon” worked in many regions of the ocean except the polar seas, but primarily in the eastern North Pacific Ocean. A large proportion of her cruises took place offshore of California and Baja California. She engaged in all fields of oceanographic research and is known for flexibility in design, ability to keep station precisely, and rapid turn-around capability.

"New Horizon" is classed ABS +A1, (E), +AMS. Capacities include 1,730ft2 clear deck, 1,265ft2 lab space, 41" diameter instrument well, 40,000g fuel oil and 8,736g potable water and 960gpd water maker. The vessel is fitted with a Nautilus 3300-065 4,000lbs. crane and 11,500lbs. A-frame over a 12' wide x 7' long x 3' deep sloped stern ramp. The vessel is powered with twin CAT D398B main engines developing 1,700BHP total at 1,225RPM, plus a 250kW bowthruster. Two Heimdal bronze CP propellers are driven through 3.9:1 gears, delivering a speed of up-to 13.5 knots. The vessel has long legs with range of 9,600nm and endurance of 40 days with accommodations for up to 12 crew and 19 scientists. “New Horizon” will continue to work under her new ownership as a U.S. flag research and survey vessel. Marcon acted as sole broker in this transaction, the third vessel Marcon has brokered to or from Scripps Institute of Oceanography as sole broker. In 1984, Marcon brokered the sale of the former 125’ x 32’ supply / geophysical survey vessel “Midnight Alaskan” (now the "Robert Gordon Sproul") from Louisiana sellers to the Institute as a replacement for the research vessel “Ellen B. Scripps”, a 96’ x 24’ vessel which Marcon sold to a small Southern California construction company. “Ellen B. Scripps” successfully served Scripps since 1965, when she was built by Halter Marine for the University of California. The “New Horizon”, subject to availability at time of commitment, may be developed for time charter through Marcon. Marcon arranged on a private & confidential basis the tow of an 11,000dwt ocean deck barge by a 3,800BHP tug.

Private U.S. West Coast buyers have purchased the former “Google” barge “JMC 262” (ex-BAL0001, CIB 721) from Cashman Equipment Corp. The 260’ x 72’ x 16’ ocean deck barge was built in 2010 by C & C Marine & Repair of Belle Chasse, Louisiana and best known as one of the four proposed four-story “mystery” barges owned by By and Large LLC, a company affiliated with Google. The barges were reportedly being outfitted as floating “studios” and “temporary technology exhibit spaces” providing an interactive experience where people could learn about the tech company’s newest technology and products. After various questions arose regarding building permits and U.S. Coast Guard safety concerns, the project was put on hold and conversion halted. The double-

raked, ABS +A1 Ocean Deck barge can carry abt. 5,107 long tons on a 12.58’ draft and has a 9/16” plate deck with a uniform deck load of 5,000PSF. The ½” plate hull is divided by six transverse watertight, two longitudinal watertight and one centerline mid-body non-watertight bulkheads forming 15 epoxy coated watertight compartments. Marcon International acted as sole broker in the sale. In 2014 Marcon brokered six ocean and inland deck barges totaling 25,658dwt capacity. Over the past 34 years Marcon International has sold or chartered a total of 216 ocean and inland deck barges with an aggregate deadweight capacity of over 1 million tons.

Harbor Enterprises, Inc. of Seward, Alaska has sold their ABS +A1 Ocean combo deck/tank barge “PM 230” (ex-NPI-230, FNT 230, Alaska Spirit) to private U.S. Northwest Buyers for conversion to ABS +A1 Ocean deck service. Built in 1983 as the “Alaska Spirit” (Hull 635), the barge is one of several units produced in the early 1980s by Zidell Marine Group of Portland, Oregon that served as a combination barge for carrying deck cargo and petroleum cargo in commercial trade. The units all measured 230’ x 60’ x 15.5’ depth, and have fast towing spoon bows, and twin towing skegs aft. All of this class have since been retired from petroleum service, and were sold into dedicated ABS Ocean deck service. This combination carriage was effectively legislated out of existence with the OPA ’90 laws, and Owners were forced to dedicate the tonnage to either liquid service or deck. This barge entered dedicated petroleum service in 1988 and served in the Alaska trade up until her mandatory retirement date December 31, 2014. Her internals being effectively “pickled” with the carriage of

petroleum since 1988 – the steel condition was well maintained over the years while trading as a tank barge. The barge was delivered to her new Owner at a Pacific Northwest shipyard the very first week of 2015. All of the pumps and petroleum service equipment will be removed, and the “PM 230” will be fitted with a 250 ton crawler crane and converted to dedicated deck and in crane service working in Alaska. Her deadweight as a deck barge will be about 3,300T. The barge previously carried about 25,000 BBL of petroleum product in below deck, integral tanks as well as some clean fuel product in on-deck tanks. Marcon acted as the sole and exclusive broker for the sale of this barge.
