FROM THE DESK OF THE DIRECTOR: Happy Spring! Can you believe we are again at Aucon me? It’s true, it is that me again, the me for all hands on deck as they say. MCSC could not be what it is without the support from people like you. We rely on the funds raised during this event to sustain us for the year to pay general occupancy expenses to keep our Center open, heated and bright. Take a moment and think about the use this Center gets throughout the year. I can assure you there are so many things happening here at all hours of the day.

They say it takes a village to raise a child; I want you to think about what it takes to age. One could say to age gracefully is to have a place to socialize and learn, to have a place offering fun trips, nights out, things to do. To age gracefully in Monroe, the community needs a place that does these things. Monroe Community Senior Center is that place and it needs you to support it! Come to the Members Only Silent Aucon on April 27, enjoy cocktails and appezers with friends and make new ones! If your budget allows for it come and support MCSC at the larger event the next day; our Annual Aucon. Both events celebrate our 50 years of serving the Monroe community!

Another way to show your support is to gather donaons! It is as easy as asking your favorite shops, restaurants and desnaons to donate on your behalf. Yes, there’s a form for that; pick one up at the Front Desk!! Explain how important the Senior Center is to you and the community.

I am sure you have noced our new name, logo and branding, but have you checked out our Facebook page or website? If not, I encourage you to do so, sign up for our email updates while you are at it!

You’ll see some great program opportunies in this edion of The Grapevine, great trips, interesng classes, games to play, something to interest almost everybody! If you are looking to champion anything here at the Center that you are interested in but do not see listed, come in and explain what you can offer!

Jacob McGee, Execuve Director [email protected]

Do you want to help other seniors and receive a small spend at the same me?

The Senior Companion Program, a program of Homage Senior Services, is looking for volunteers age 55+ in Snohomish County, including the Monroe area, to support seniors who live at home. The Senior Companion Program is a federal grant program that trains seniors to assist other sen-iors to provide companionship and assist with transportaon, shopping, respite support and other household tasks.

To be a Senior Companion Volunteer, an individual must be 55+, lower income, and be able to volunteer a minimum of 15 hours a week. Volunteers receive an hourly spend and mile-age or public transportaon reimbursement. These payments are considered reimbursements and do not impact any other benefits because they are not considered income by the IRS.

Do you need help from a Senior Companion volunteer? Or want to be trained as a Senior Companion volunteer? We’d love to hear from you! For more informaon, call 425-879-7050 or email Mary Ann Higgins at [email protected].

Wow! This place has been one busy place. I cannot believe all of the things that go on here during the week. I’m sure the rest of you are ready to see some blue skies and sunshine. My husband and I snuck away for a week in the Nashville area. While it was cold while we

were there, we really enjoyed seeing the blue skies. We spent our week hunting. My husband and his brother hunted for rabbits and my sister in law and I hunted for milk glass, antiques and Vaseline glass. We had a great time visiting family as well. We have been settling in with our new chocolate lab puppy, Daisy. She is a sweetheart! Right now we are working on simple commands and potty training. This March, we will celebrate our sweet granddaughter, Hannah’s 1st birthday. Can’t believe my little bug is going to be a year old already! I get to watch her on Mondays and I just love our time together. I’m excited to experience my first MCSC auction. People are already working very hard to make this a very successful auction. Please consider attending and/or donating items to help support our center. Don’t forget to spring ahead on Sunday, March 11, 2018.

TIDBITS FROM TRACY FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT I asked my husband what I should talk about and he said that I never seem to be at a loss for words. Do you think he was trying to be funny? He said I could talk about houses or dogs or horses or travel or books, so, I choose DOGS. We have 2 dogs, both Leonbergers. A 5 year old named Stryker who you may have seen come into the Center. He loves people and being admired. Our other boy, Nudge, is just a baby, only 11 months old today. He is taller than Stryker and as soon as his puppy manners are a little more dependable he will make a visit to the Center. Now let’s talk about the Senior Center and our 50th Anniversary Celebration. I hope you enjoyed our big OPEN HOUSE on February 21st. Our next big event in this year of celebration will be our annual auction on Saturday, April 28th; however, this will be a little different. For the very first time we will have it here at the Center. This will make it much easier to attend since it’s right here in town. There are many other things planned throughout the rest of the year that you will be hearing about. Something, which we hope will become an every month event, is the Third Thursday Lunch with Board members. We’ve had one lunch which was pretty well attended; however, there was a slight mis-understanding about the purpose. The idea behind the lunch is to give members a chance to talk with a board member at their table about anything they care to discuss. It is not a meeting or any formal talk. Just you and me. You can tell about something you like or would like to see at the Center. You can ask questions. You can tell me about what you like to do. Most of all its intended to be an opportunity for all of us, those of us on the Board and members that come into the Center to get to know each other better. Tracy tells me I have a deadline so I will look forward to seeing many of you this month. It may be late, but, Happy Valentine’s Day! Joan Brown [email protected]
