Landcruising Australia Wide: March 2010

A week or so ago, Vince, Ralph and myselfsat down to do the preliminary selection ofthe photographs entered in the club’sphotographic competition. This was farmore difficult than expected due to somany good pictures being submitted. Wedid however eventually get down to a listof the ten best in each category. This willbe judged by a professional photographerduring the month. Acceptable forms arebribes are cash, credit card or the currencyof Scotland i.e. a good single malt. We arestill on schedule for announcing thewinners at the April meeting.

This year we are looking at having toreplace a large number of committeemembers. As next year is the club’s 40thanniversary, it would be a pity if the year isremembered as the one where we had alarge number of vacancies. Committeemembers we need to replace this year onthe main committee are:

As you can see, ¾ of the executive are notstanding for re-election. It is important thatall the committee positions of the club arefilled. The intention is not for a few peopleto have several roles as this is too much ofa burden on them. It also makes it difficultwhen they are away as we then struggle toget a quorum at some of the committeemeetings.

If you are able to stand for any of thecommittee positions, please send in anomination for to the secretary. These willappear in the April and May newsletter. Ifyou want to qualify for the early birdspecial, contact me via email and I willsend you a nomination form.

We have just completed the firstattendance of Four Wheel Drive S.A. at thefive day Caravan, Camping, Outdoor andAdventure Show. I would like to thank allthose that helped out at the FWDSA standand those club members who helped withthe recovery demonstrations. From what Ihave heard, the organisers were pleasedwith what we put on at the show.

After a few demonstrations of using a hi-liftjack as a winch, I seriously hope that I amnot put into a predicament where I have todo such a recovery. While it does workfairly well, the amount of effort required tomove the vehicle is not for the fainthearted. Archimedes stated sometime agothat if you gave him an anchor point,fulcrum and lever he could move the world.Well I wish the bugger was at the show sohe could move my vehicle.

The “Get to Know Your Vehicle” for Prados run on Feb 27th was very wellattended and a great success. Peter Young shared many tips andexperiences with the group.

The second course for the larger vehicles 80 to 200 series etc will be run onthe on the new date of April the 17th.

Cherry Gardens Basic Training and assessment (13th & 14th March) wascancelled as the date conflicted with too many other 4wd & 2wd activities.

Peake Sand Driving Weekend on the (27th & 28th March) still has vacancies.

Remember if we don’t get at least 10 vehicles the club has to make up thedifference as we have guaranteed the landowner a minimum amount toretain our March booking. This is both a training and a fun social weekend inthe sand.

April 10th is the learn about Ozexplorer GPS software day at the 4WDSArooms Cavan. This too has some vacancies.

The Senior First Aid Course will be run on May 1st. We have a vacancy.Those who already have a certificate are reminded that renewal is every 3years and now is the opportunity to attend this course. Full payment for thecourse is required at the March General Meeting. The workbooks will beavailable on payment.

Canning trip and the 2012 Solar eclipse trip

appear to be full.

I am in desperate need for trips to fill in the

gaps, the October LWE is still free. And

there are plenty of ordinary weekends that

we could find somewhere to go..

Our Values

You are returning to your vehicle afterattending a Club meeting, and as you reachfor the door handle a television reporterpokes a microphone in your face and asks,“what values does your Club have thatmake you any different from 4 wheel drivehoons we see every day?” What wouldyou say?

After composing yourself and perhapstaking courage from other members whoare milling around you would no doubtmake an honest attempt to provide apositive answer to the awkward question.

So what are our values, what are thosethings we consider most important in thatpart of our lives dedicated to four wheeldriving as a member of TLCCSA?

Our Club Constitution and Rules provide agood indication of our values even if theyare not stated in those terms. Things like

family oriented activities,safe driving, skillstraining, sharingknowledge, vehiclemaintenance,environment conservation. It’s all there.

In both the public and private sectors it ispart of the public armoury to have anorganisation’s values clearly articulated andproudly displayed. But such windowdressing is of absolutely no value unlessthe people in that organisation know thevalues and apply them.

So, if our TV reporter went on to ask, “howdoes your Club apply its values?” you couldconfidently tick all the boxes. We do putinto practice those things we can claim asour values.

It is too easy for opponents of 4WDvehicles to criticise the impact of thosevehicles on aspects of pollution, evengreenhouse gas contribution, without

considering the balancing viewpoint. Thatthis Club values the diverse environmentthrough which we travel and in which wecamp is beyond question. With confidencewe can look back over many years andrecord the many ways that Club membershave demonstrated true care forenvironment protection. This commitmentby members continues in club trips,through training, in proper maintenance ofvehicles, and in participation inconservation activities.

On Saturday 13th March we held our LawnBowls event at the West Croydon RSL.The Committee would like to thank thosethat attended and I am sure everyone hada fun evening. Thanks also go to AileenMcClay for organizing the night.Congratulations to all the winners.

May is going to be a very busy month forthe Committee and members with severalfunctions organised.

On Sunday 2nd May we are holding a cardrive to the Barossa lead by Ralph Abbot.Morning tea will be supplied and it is aBYO lunch. Further details will follow.

On Sunday 23rd May, our long awaitedvisit to the Zoo to see the Panda’s WangWang and Funi is happening. We havesecured a group visit at 12.45pm and arein the process of organizing to havemorning tea supplied. Admission prices

for the group are $22.00 Adults, $17.00Pens/Conc and $12.00 children. Furtherdetails will follow.

On Sunday 30th May is the first of ourMovie afternoons for the year. Thetheatre at Pasadena is privately run and ifyou have not been before, it is worthattending. The first movie is shown withan interval followed by the 2nd movie. Atthe conclusion a light meal is served bythe social club. There are only 40 seatsavailable so register as soon as possible.

At the March general meeting we will beholding our Easter raffle so don’t forget tosupport the social club.

Our meeting place was at Tailem Bendat 8.30am. Those that were joining ourtrip leaders Ray & Beryl Sheean were:Shirley & Kevin Wigglesworth, John &Judy Gotch, Peter & Rayelene Carlsen,Murray & Aileen McClay, and joining usat Whitfield were Chris & Diana Grace. Ican’t miss out on our ‘other’ membersof the group – Karen Navman and ZoeNavman. We had two Prados, three 80Series Landcruisers, and a Nissan on thetrip.

Last year Ray & Beryl were late at themeeting place, this year they were ontime which wasn’t to be said for someof the group. I won’t name names, butone car arrived an hour earlier thanappointed time. We reckon a cookedbreakfast was made before anyone gotthere. Someone else hadn’t figured onthe fact of getting every red lightimaginable on the way there – so theywere late. Eventually we left TailemBend at around 9am and headed for ourfirst camp spot for the night. Westopped of course at the Bordertownbakery for sustenance to help us on theway.

Everything was going fine until not farover the Victorian border when Kevin &Shirley’s caravan blew a tyre and a hastytyre change done (obviously Vic Roads!).John walked back to where all theremnants of the blown tyre were left onthe road and removed the really bigpiece sitting in the middle of the road.Thanks, John. Then we were on ourway. Stopping at the usual wateringspot, Logan Pub before heading up tothe camping site at Kooyoora State Park.After setting up, it was discovered thatRay & Beryl’s caravan was a little worsefor wear as the door to the caravanwasn’t shutting. That was the end of dayone. Weather wasn’t too bad at thatstage.

On the morning of Day 2 there were lotsof ‘Honey’ endearments, but it wasn’tthe men talking to their wives, it wastalking to ‘Honey’ the dog. Peter &Rayelene had brought along Honey andCokey their Australian Cattle Dogs. Wepacked up and started heading ontoWhitfield where it was discovered thatPeter could not get his caravan fridgeworking. At Whitfield Caravan Park wemet up with Chris & Diana Grace. Theweather was also getting hotter.

Day 3 we headed off to Myrrhee and our

‘Well Educated Australians’ no, ‘ThePoms’, Chris & Diana virtually got acrash course in 4WDing. Unfortunatelyfor Chris the radio in his car stoppedworking and they had to use a borrowedhand held for the rest of the day. Therewas lots of bird watching (feathered thatis) through the tracks we were travellingon. Interesting to see how overgrownsome areas were compared to 12months ago after the fires. KarenNavman was having meltdown at timeswhen the tracks disappeared and ZoeNavman did a spinning meltdown! Ourleaders were always telling us about therabbits they see, the birds they see andwe kept telling them that we didn’tbelieve them as those behind themnever saw anything. What they didn’ttell us was that they saw a deerbecause they said no-one would believethem. Of course, we didn’t believe themwhen they owned up that evening.Peter’s radio was also having issues.When we arrived back to camp it was‘men’s business’ at the Grace’s carattempting to get the radioto work – it failed! So backto hand held for the nextday.

Day 4 we then went toTomahawk Gap andeverything was going alrightuntil we got lost. Oh sorry,not lost, just geographicallyembarrassed!! KarenNavman knew where shewas going. Funny how shecan’t find places here inAdelaide, but can find atrack in the middle ofnowhere!! Obviously the

signs have beenchanged whenwork has beendone on the tracks.It didn’t help thatRay’s GPS onceagain decided thatit does not likegoing to the HighCountry. It had atotal meltdown anddecided to go onstrike! Reckon theheat got to it as itwas getting hotterand hotter. It didlike to workoccasionallythough.

Day 5 was a rest day and all of usheaded to Wangaratta. Dick Smith wasclosing down so the Graces’ got somehand held radios at a good price and Raygot a new GPS while in Wang. All butJohn & Judy went to the WangarattaRSL for lunch, and then it was on tochecking out a few wineries for twovehicles. John & Judy met up withfamily for the day.

Day 6 our trip was to Paradise Falls orshould I say Paradise Trickle and lunch atLake William Hovell where we wentthrough a few river crossings. The waterwas up to the bottom of the doors ofthe cars in places. Ray ended up with aflat tyre. Later that evening we met thelocal constabulary who actuallyconfirmed that there is deer in the highcountry. So I guess that Ray & Berylhadn’t been dreaming when they sawthat deer.

Day 7 was a slow day on the trackwhere we were heading for Lake

Cobbler and The Staircase. First a hiccupin the track – two smallish trees acrossthe track. So out with the axes and afterabout ½ hour we were on our way afterall the men had chopped and moved thetrees. Then further up the track therewas another tree across the track, but itwas a monster tree. All the men took itin turns with the axes. That took almostan hour to get it moved by chopping andchaining it to Ray’s car to pull it off thetrack. Very hard work, especially for thewomen watching. Made us feel very hotall that work. By this time, the weatherwas getting hotter and hotter. John’s carwas having fuel problems and also hewas having problems with his car fridge.Murray’s car was having air conditioningproblems and sub tank problems.

Day 8 was an easy day but due to fuelproblems, John & Judy didn’t come withus into the tracks but went to Bright.The rest of us went on tracks behind MtBuffalo and then onto Bright for lunch.After lunch it was discovered that Rayhad another flat tyre so he pumped it upand we headed back to camp via theblacktop instead of back through themountains. By this time it was gettingbl…dy hotter and hotter. The weatherforecast for the next day was going tobe over 43 degrees, CatastrophicCategory, so we took a vote and decidedto come back a day earlier than planned.The Graces decided to stay in the areaand moved to a different caravan park.

Some of the things that went on werethat Shirley kept forgetting what her carlooked liked, she kept trying to get intoour car. Apparently it has something todo with her wearing slippers whiletravelling. I haven’t got the full story onthat yet. When Ray got the second flat,he didn’t change it until it got cooler. Raymentioned that his ‘tyre is flat enough’and when he was asked ‘How do youknow?’ the reply was ‘The air is all at thetop’.

Then there was the radio talk. At onestage our Tail End Charlie happened tomention that they had ‘passed over’. Wewere a bit worried about that comment,but upon checking, they were still tailingus. Most mornings we were woken upby the sound of either magpies orkookaburras. Those kookaburrasdefinitely have a sense of humour. Theylaughed at our jokes and at Ray changingthe tyre. The Grace’s told us they weregetting sick of Kookaburras now. I must

say, they startedlaughing atabout 4.30am inthe morning!

While we werein one of theNational Parks aNSW manvirtually flaggeddown theGrace’s toinform them thatthe infamous‘Staircase’ isgone! So wewent on anotherday and checkedit out – and yes, it is gone. So VicMapswill have to remove it from their maps.

Shirley & Kevin, John & Judy and ustravelled back together on the Tuesday.It took us a little while to get back toHorsham. We stopped for lunch inBendigo at Subway. Then the cars justhappened to get tired at St Arnaudoutside one of the pubs and we just hadto try their wares because it was stillhot. Then of course, we headed up thestreet to see if there were any‘treasures’ to be found there in an oldfashioned hardware store. Only a coupleof things were bought. We were lookingforward to reaching Horsham so wecould use the airconditioners in thecaravans, but that wasn’t to be. Itstarted raining and it came in cool. Sowe almost had to put heaters on! It wasbeautiful to have the coolness afterroasting in Whitfield. On the last leg ofthe journey, we again stopped at theBordertown bakery and Shirley & Kevintold us of a place in (can’t tell you ) thatmakes good steak sandwiches, so wemade another stop for lunch to make

sure that this place still made good steak

sandwiches.

Everyone enjoyed themselves

immensely but I am still waiting for ‘that

snow’ that apparently happens in the

High Country. Haven’t seen it yet, but I

don’t think I need to pack winter clothes

for the High Country in future!! (Guess

that will put the curse on and snow will

prevail)

We last left our intrepid travellerssetting up camp on the HauntedStream campsite...will they survivethe night in such a scary location?Will Edmund be able to fix hisdented rim? Read on to find out....

4th JanuaryAt 8:15 a.m., this was the earlieststart so far. We drove out of HauntedStream and up Dahlstrom Break.Here we encountered the deepestwater crossing so far. Then it waseasy driving along the Alpine Roadand the Buchan – Ensay Road with astop at Seldom Seen Roadhouse.We reached Buchan by 11 a.m.There was nowhere to fix Edmund’sdinged wheel but we got supplies,fuel, pumped up tyres and had lunchat the pub.Then we drove the narrow cliff-hugging road to McKillop Bridgecampsite where we set up tents. Itwas quite hot with good swimmingin the Snowy River.

5th – 6th JanuaryWe had 2 nights at McKillop Bridgewith a day drive to Tingaringy andLaurie tracks in between. Thesewere quite challenging. Our intentionwas to go via Gully and Amboynetracks onto Amboyne SettlementRoad but got there via another tracknot marked on the map.

7th JanuaryRae decided to go home a day earlydue to family matters so Phil andRae left early the next morning. Sothen there were two vehicles left onour trip.

Edmund had been varying the orderof vehicles so that a different onewas tail-end Charlie each day. Theleader always saw all the wildlifewhich had fled by the time the othervehicles came along, so on the lastday he had Leo and Rhonda go infront. We retraced our way backalong McKillop Bridge Road thentook Snowy River Road North untilwe turned off onto Ingeegoodbeetrack through McFarlane’s Flat. ThereLeo and Rhonda saw 5 baby emus in

a row crossing the track.The Cobberas trail was pretty. Wethought it quite challenging but therewere two vehicles behind us thatdragged camper trailers over therocky steps. They were right behindus at the start of the difficult bit, butpassed us about twenty minutes intoour lunch. They must have struggledto get over the challenging bits. Welunched at The Playgrounds. Towardsthe end of this track we saw severalgrassy flat campsites that were notmarked on the map.

Then we went on larger roads toOmeo and some luxury! We stayedin a cabin in the caravan park wherewe had spent Christmas on aprevious trip. GENERAL MEETING MINUTES

Meeting held at the WAFC on Monday 22nd February 2010 at 7.30pm

Meeting commenced at 7.45pm when President, Edmund Morries welcomed everyone and advising them that the recorder wasbeing used tonight. Emergency evacuation procedures explained. Supper duties required by members whose surnamescommenced with H, I, J, and K. Attendance Register was on its way.

Present: 97 members were in attendance at this meeting. 10 visitors from other 4WD Clubs. 5 new VisitorsApologies: W & M Sheean, S Hurst, D Murphy, J Philp, G & J Vine, G Ellis, and H & J Lawrence

MINUTES OF THE PREVIOUS MEETINGJean Brown motioned an amendment from the minutes of the previous meeting. The name of the new library book is called JeanBrown Memoirs and not Jim Brown Memoirs. Minutes were moved as correct by Steve Miller, Seconded Helen Monterola.CARRIED

Welcoming Welcoming Officer, Simon Critchley welcomed the following visitors for the evening: Wayne Gully of Hawthorndene,Colin Wood of Darlington and Troy Dobinson of Torrensville. Environment Officer: Vince Monterola welcomed the visitors and gave a talk about Gum Creek Cactus Cull in which 24 membersdid a ‘find and destroy’ cactus trip. The owners of the Station are in attendance to give a talk on the ecological disasters that arehappening in the Flinders Ranges. Trip Report was prepared by Peter & Robyn Trezise on the cactus cull. Due to a problem withthe DVD the last 5 minutes was unable to be seen. There are copies of the discs for anyone who wants to see what was done inthe area. The owner of Gum Creek Station, Bill MacIntosh gave a talk on the history of the station as well as the reason forremoving the cactus from the land. There is at least 40-50 square kilometres of cactus that is a problem in the area. Bill gave aninteresting talk plus photos on the cactus, how it is spread. Bill talked about the good relationships with well respected groups tocontinue the cull.

Treasurer and Secretary: Nil to report

Membership: Due to David Ward’s absence, Sue Thompson announced that the following membership applications had beenreceived: Mike & Pam Barkway of Christies Beach; Michael Brooks of Glandore

Social: Lawn Bowls to be held on the 13th March. 5.30pm West Croydon RSL $15/person. Drive to Barossa Valley on the 2ndMay. BYO Lunch, Visit to Zoo 23rd May – Panda viewing 12.45pm. Movie Afternoon on the 30th May with light tea afterwards.Still vacancies for Lawn Bowls and Movies.

Trips: David Sheridan ran through the trips with the first one being the Clean Up Australia Day at the Coorong on the 13/14thMarch and some trailers are needed to put rubbish in. Easter at the Pyrenees, Drill’m Fill’m Kill’m, June Flinders Trees and Tracksall have spots still left. Bendleby Ranges and Kimberleys both full. Kudremitchie – only 5 names so far. Need more and it isn’t amajor working bee but there are a few odd jobs to be done. Canning Stock Route – few expressions of interest. 2012 SolarEclipse still open for interest. Whyalla 4WD Club has a trip in October. There are plenty of other weekends that are available forone night trips if someone wants to organise. Geoff Thompson talked about the Pyrenees. Camp site is in the Pyrenees StateForest which is a 6 hour drive on Highway 8 and is in the wine region. Reasonably high hills, good driving. Test your car out ifgoing to the High Country. Self sufficient. All forms of camping OK. Next meeting will be information on it to those going.

Training: Murray McClay announced that there is a slight change in details for Education Calendar. Next Education is the 27thFebruary which is Getting to Know Your Vehicle for the Prado owners at 8am, All Trac South Road Mile End. Training at CherryGardens now cancelled due to a lot of things happening at the same time. DTU are running a Basic Theory Course – if anyone isinterested. 27/28th March – Peake and we need more people to attend. April 10 – OziExplorer at Cavan – a few vacancies. 17thApril – Get to Know Your Vehicle Group 2 for larger land cruisers. 1st May – Senior First Aid Course. May – GPS Theory dates tobe updated when closer to events. Allan McIntyre advised that there is DTU changes. Revised Assessment criteria for numbers ofassessments required which has been reduced from 3 to 2 if you are still progressing in Basic, Advanced and Advanced Recovery.Handouts are available with these new changes at the Training desk. Any questions contact Allan. These changes are effectiveimmediately provided you have had 2 different assessors.

Vice President/Advertising & Publicity: Caravan & Camping Show – SA 4WD Association has a display stand and demo. Edmundrunning demos. $7 discount passes. At the Advertising table there is brochures from our sponsors – Redarc, Electric Bug, Bridgestone,Stihl, Map Shop, Atlanta Refrigeration, All Trac, Anaconda, Rays Outdoors, Don Kyatt, Cornes Toyota – you don’t need to have a 4WD.40th Anniversary committee meeting after General Meeting.

Environment: Winner of Kermit & Kookaburra photo was Vern. Register for Flinders and more people needed for Coorong where there isa lot of beach driving. Lots of fun. Staying at Kantana Homestead with facilities and can get in at lunch time. Place will be sign posted.Gum Creek – more volunteers needed. Ngarkat working bee- all clubs get together for the working bee. June Trees and Tracks there isroom for 1 left. Next venture will be cane toads.Photo contest – Environment photos. Permission to use the photos needed as the Association is always looking for photos to put inpublications.

Technical: Peter Young mentioned that the Club is almost all 100 series and Prados now. Times in the distant years we had greater carrange and technical and maintenance required more input from Technical Officer. Peter is having trouble with lack of people askingquestions nowadays. He suggests if there is any aspect of cars that club members would like to ask so he can research to enable him todo better on a technical side. Peter covered problems with Nissan Patrol mag wheels, wheel check 5kms after change, reasons forhaving a spare key fitted under car somewhere, carry spare wheel studs and nuts. Workshop – has seen lots of cars come in with cracksin chassis near gear box – 80 & 100 series mainly and Hi Lux. So owners need to check vehicles regularly. Peter advised that the KokodaRanges have an Ambulance donated which is a 79 Series Landcruiser for access to remote areas and require donations of: 79 Series CabChassis roof rack and sunraysia wheels. So if anyone can help out or know of anyone who can contact him.

IPP & MAPS: Ralph Abbot advised that digital and paper maps available. If you need a paper map you will need to contact Ralph toorganise pickup and sign for them.History Book – Small committee working and things are getting more involved now. Anecdotes are required to break up seriousness ofthe book.Photo Competition – 308 photos in 5 categories. Selected 10 from each category and meeting to discuss photo finalists.Report on cactus kill – Ralph and Kate Buckley went to the Argadells after the Flinders and tried the method used at Gum Creek to killPrickly Pear. Report back that 35 prickly pear plants were killed.
