Westline Aviation East London opened its doors in August 2013 and is a branch of Westline Aviation Bloemfontein, which has been serving the aviation

community since 1990 at New Tempe Airfield. The original founder member of Westline Aviation, Les Daley, is now at the helm in East London, while Bloemfontein is in the capable hands of company CEO Charlie Marais, ex-SAAF commander. Charlie is one of few Grade 1 Designated Examiners in the country for both Fixed Wing aircraft as well as Helicopters.

Westline offers a range of professional pilot training from those who would like to do their Private Pilot’s licence for their own leisure and pleasure, as well as for aspiring airline pilots.

Ready for take-off?‘A mile of highway will take you a mile,

a mile of runway will take you anywhere.’

Westline also has a base of operation in Grahamstown, where the interest of local students seems to be more toward the Light Sport Licence for recreational flying, although Grahamstown also has access to everything on offer in East London.

We operate both helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft and offer a range of charter flights on both as well: engagements, weddings, scenic coastal flights, as well as business trips. We also offer an introductory flight if you want to ‘test the sky’ before making any commitment to doing a course.

Stings from bluebottles and jellyfish can bring a painful end to a day at

the beach – unless you know how to treat them effectively. Bluebottles are more com-mon along the east coast of South Africa when a north-easterly wind is blowing, and are sometimes found along the west coast when a south-easterly wind is blowing. It’s the tentacles of the crea-ture that sting, not the blue bubble – and even the dead ones can harm you, so stay away from them when you’re walking on the beach.

If you get stung1. Carefully remove the ten-

tacles from your skin with a piece of driftwood or shell; don’t use your hands, because you’ll risk being stung again.

2. Looking out for other bluebottles, was the stung area with seawater – but don’t rub the sting, as this

will aggravate it. (the idea that it helps to rub sand onto a bluebottle sting is a myth. Sand will not relieve the pain – it’ll only make it worse)

3. To ease the pain and deactivate the toxins, submerge your skin in very hot water – hot enough to only just tolerate without burning your skin. Whatever you do, don’t use vinegar on a bluebottle sting; this will make it worse.

4. If necessary, seek medical at-tention.

Just Surfing in Epsom Road Stir-ling, sells a product called “All Stings Considered.” Cost R20.
