The QUILL - Bald Eagle Art League’s Monthly Newsletter
2015 Hi Members, Happy almost Spring. We have had some really nice weather so we can’t complain. I hung a ‘Squirrel Buster’ birdfeeder right outside of the picture window of our den and I’ve been having a blast watching all kinds wild things. What fun. Two woodpeckers and two fat blue jays all in one morning. If you all get a chance, check out the BEAL FACEBOOK and look at Leona’s bird photos. I don’t know how she does it. They are beautiful. We’ve been blessed with some very talented guests as well. Another couple weeks we will meet at Rita & Steve’s to plan out the next season. March Birthday: Diane Arbus , (March 14, 1923 – July 26, 1971) was an American photographer and writer noted for photographs of marginalized people—dwarfs, giants, transgender people, nudists, circus performers—and others whose normality was perceived by the general populace as ugly or surreal. In 1972, a year after she took her own life, Arbus became the first American photographer to have photographs displayed at the Venice Biennale.[7] Millions viewed traveling exhibitions of her work in 1972–1979. In 2006, the motion picture Fur, starring Nicole Kidman as Arbus, presented a fictional version of her life story.

What’s Been Happening?
Harry Nash, Abstract Expressionist and author of two history books was a surprise guest. The artist who was scheduled for March needed surgery and Harry graciously volunteered (with short notice) to fill in for her. He was very interesting. He shared with us his series, Twenty Cubed, a 20 piece, black & white, painted series of totally abstract work, and proceeded to help us to understand the difference between abstract and realistic art. Thanks Harry for sharing your intriguing style.
Message from Maggie (our resident Southern Belle) The portrait class is going very well. Full house at most meetings. Details below if you want to participate. Maggie is conducting a portrait drawing get-‐together at her house, 10am, on the second and fourth Thursdays. If you are interested, call or email her: 570-‐435-‐8029 & [email protected]
The Genetti Grille Gallery is featuring Lynne Becker as the artist for March. “Exploration” is a gathering of Lynne's personal work including some traditional styles as well as alternative processes. Lynne's love of Polaroid will be showcased with 3 different techniques; Polaroid image transfer, Polaroid emulsion lift and Polaroid SX70 image impressions. Great show Lynne!
Membership for the League is still growing. Just yesterday I had another new member in the mail. Fantastic! Our board members have been busy recruiting as well. Good for you!!!! Looks like 50% of the members are paid up. Remember to send your membership in so you don’t lose access to my meaningful emails and newsletters.

April’s Meeting Laura Petrovich-‐Cheney -‐ Wood Assemblage I first met Laura at her exhibition and art talk at Lock Haven University. I found her
work intriguing. She had salvaged wood from primarily boats destroyed by Hurricane Sandy and with various tools such as chain saws, and other ‘men’ tools, she created wall pieces with a strange resemblance to Grandmother’s quilts. She was fascinating
and I never dreamed she say yes when I asked to be a guest at a BEAL meeting. After all, she lives in Asbury Park, NJ. Laura Petrovich-‐Cheney's work focuses on resurrecting debris found in the natural environment. By playing with textures and surfaces, and by
using processes such as burning, casting, skinning, sawing, hacking or cleaving the materials become new. "My destructive, energetic marks retrace the visceral inscriptions made by time. The aggressive actions made by nature and me, create
mystery and the work investigates my relationship to nature, time and place." I was thrilled when she agreed to be a BEAL guest for us. I have posted many of Laura’s exhibitions (in various states) on our Facebook account as well as video clips from news
reports about her shows and the awards she has won. Google her before you attend. Very informative and creative! www.lauracheney.com/
