Presentation Ball It was certainly a wonderful evening last Saturday when we all assembled at the Hopetoun Me-morial Hall to honour our presentees. It was an evening of glamour, enjoyment and celebration. The presentees and partners all looked superb as they walked confidently in front of a very large crowd to be presented to the official party. The celebratory dancing which followed combined some traditional dances plus some up-beat performances. The students clearly enjoyed their evening. The presentees were breathtaking. They were a credit to themselves, their parents, families and the school. A huge ‘thank you’ goes to the Presentation Ball Committee. They did a massive amount of work to ensure the success of the evening. The hall decorations were superb and the overall organisa-tion was second to none. Thanks also go to the dance teachers – Carol, Connoly and Gabrielle. They patiently worked with the students to teach them a range of dances which were well re-ceived by the parents, friends and crowd in attendance. There were many more people who assisted throughout the night to make it a success. I won’t name them all – I would just like to say thanks for your contribution towards making the evening so enjoyable for the presentees, partners and families and all who attended. Finally, I would also like to note the large number of past students who made the effort to return to Hopetoun for the weekend to join the celebrations. It is great to see the connections back home are very strong.

Final Week of Term It has been a short term but we have packed a lot into it. Our final activity next week will be the Year 7-12 athletic sports on Thursday. Here’s hoping for good weather to round out our term in a positive way.

College Council

We had four consecutive meetings on Wednesday 14th March. We started with Finance followed by Grounds & Buildings, then we had our normal College Council meeting and finished with our Annual Meeting – all of which was concluded in the space of two hours! Some of the decisions, approvals, actions included:

Ratification of the sharing arrangements for the school/community tractor.

Authorisation of payment of the tractor.

Approval of the confirmed cash budget for 2018.

Discussion on various grounds projects including watering system for the front oval, discus-

sion on the spare shade sail and other grounds projects.

Approval of orchard project to be established near the hot house.

Report on proposed changes to the attendance policy, notably a suggestion that the mini-

mum attendance for scheduled classes for VCE be increased from the current 80% to 90%.

Decided to continue pressing politicians for an upgrade to our Food Tech. and Science

rooms.

Approval of the draft School Annual Report.

Student Voice Following on from the Student Leadership Conference, our SRC executive and SRC members have become active in planning follow-up events. Casual clothes and Easter Egg guessing to raise money for the Good Friday Appeal is underway. This will be followed by a revamped school cross country program to be held early next term. They have also surveyed all students to deter-mine the most appropriate areas for focussing SRC energies this year. Keep up the good work!

The word ‘resilience’ is used to describe the capacity people have to cope, learn and thrive in the face of change, challenge or ad-versity. Some children and young people find it harder than others to cope with the challenges they face in life. However, all children can develop coping strategies to help them deal with stress and challenge.

There are things that families and schools can do to help build the resilience of children and young people, and to help them to de-velop positive coping strategies.

What can parents do to support resilience building?

Establish a safe and supportive environ-ment

Role-model strong social and emotional skills

Give attention to positive behaviours in order to reward and reinforce them

Set clear rules and boundaries requiring respect and cooperation

What are the key skills for resilience?

Self-control-managing anger and anxi-ety and the expression of emotions

Social management-developing the skills and confidence to talk and mix with other people and work and play well with others

Effort and persistence-understanding the importance of hard work and per-sistence

Problem solving-building the capacity to think about how to deal with a range of challenges

Positive coping strategies-developing the capacity to cheer themselves up, calm themselves down, ask for help if needed and to work out ways to solve a problem
