There is greatpower inhope. Hope
opens doors wheredespair has closedthem. Hope sees prob-lems as opportunities.Hope is essential forlife…so essential, infact, that Scripturedescribes HOPE as “astrong and trustworthyanchor for our souls”(Hebrews 6:19).
One of the earliest
symbols of theChristian faith, theanchor has at its centera cross. For Christians, the cross-shapedanchor reminds us of the hope we have inChrist. In the same way an anchor steadiesand secures a ship during stormy weather,HOPE—anchored by faith in Jesus Christ—holds the wind-tossed, storm-torn, and weary
believer during his or her most perilous times. An untold number of persons have written to us over the years,
saying, “I felt hopeless and alone. Then I found the Hour of Powerand for the first time in a very long time, I felt HOPE again. Yousaved my life.” For millions of persons around the world, the Hourof Power is their only spiritual anchor.
Over the past forty years, God has called on countless loving andgenerous individuals like YOU to support this ministry financially.

A look back with the Hour of Power
Finding Hope toFaceHisTomorrows
By Robert H. Schuller Some years ago I received a
phone call from a man who lived inMonte Carlo.
“Dr. Schuller,” he said, “we havenever met, but you saved my life. Iwant to come see you and thank youin person.”
A few days later, this man flewto Los Angeles and arrived in myoffice. A tall, handsome, broad-shouldered man, probably in hisearly fifties, he limped toward me,a white cane in his right hand, oneleg conspicuously shorter than theother one. A black patch coveredhis left eye, while his right eyestared upward, unfocused. Hiscompanion spoke first, saying,
“As you can see, Juan is blind. But he’s alive—
thanks to you. Juanand I were businesspartners and friendsbefore his accident. He wanted to tell youhis story himself.”
Juan shared thathe was an only child, the sole inheritor ofhis wealthy Cubanfamily’s fortune. Fearing he might lose itall under Fidel Castro’s regime, Juan soldeverything except his large private yacht, which he sailed to Monte Carlo to dockin front of his new, luxurious, waterfronthome.
One rainy weekend, Juan and hisgirlfriend headed to Switzerland in his
I have had a very difficult and almost
unbearable life. But every Sundayas I watch the Hour of Power my heartfills with gratitude and I feel the
blessing of God’s grace in my life.

This is an excerpt from a heartwarmingstory that recently appeared in a Tampa Bay, Florida newspaper.
SEMINOLE – For the Essen-burgs, the news is sadly familiar:staggering unemployment, failingbanks, and families struggling to keepfood on the table and a roof over theirheads.
John “Jack” and Ella Essenburgare contemporaries of the GreatDepression. It’s when they met, mar-ried, and started their family that now
extends to five generations.The Essenburgs—he’s 97 and
she’s 96—recently celebrated their76th wedding anniversary. What is thekey to the longevity of their marriage?Among other things, the couple hasdeveloped a well-honed rhythm oflong-time companionship.
Sunday mornings, for instance, they settle in front of the television to catch the “possibility thinking” philosophy espoused by Robert H.Schuller’s Hour of Power.

An experienced sailor never leaves port without atleast one anchor on board. He knows that storms
may come while at sea and that the anchor will helpsecure and steady the ship duringthose storms. Our lives are likelong-distance sailing journeys.Storms will hit when we leastexpect them. So it’s foolhardy toset sail in life without an “anchor”on board.
When buffeted by a life-stormsuch as foreclosure, abandon-ment, or a life-threatening disease—without an “anchor,” we willbe tossed from discouragement todesperation to depression andeven defeat. sinking hopelessly. There is no such thing as false hope—especially if our
hope is anchored in Jesus. Hope always prevails. Hopenever fails! Even if the doctor tells you there is no hope fora cure—hope anyway. Even when your family tells youthere is no hope for reconciliation—hope anyway.
Hope changes everything! Hope changes our atti-tude—from being negative and defeated to beingoptimistic, looking for possibilities. If we are anchoredin Christ, he will give us the faith we need to ride out thestorm. And when the storm clouds clear—and theywill—no matter in what port we find ourselves, we willbe right where we should be and we won’t be alone! We’ll be surrounded by those who love us. And we willknow the Captain of our soul more intimately than weever dreamed.
So, go ahead and hope. Hope inJesus Christ. He is the anchor youand I need to weather the stormsof life, bringing us through tolive the glorious life God has instore for each one of us.

Rolls Royce. Driving too fast, he lostcontrol on the slick road and wrappedthe car around a tree. Seven monthslater, he awakened from a coma tofind that the accident had killedhis girlfriend, caused himto go blind, and badlydeformed his left leg.
Juan went to bedevery night hopinghe would die in hissleep. Eventually heplanned to kill him-self with a revolveron a Sunday morningafter dismissing hisstaff. Once alone, hewould turn up the TV’s vol-ume as loud as possible. With onehand holding a gun to his temple, hewould use his other hand to press theTV “on,” filling the room with sound, drowning out the gunshot.
Sunday morning came, Juan followed his plan, but before he couldpull the trigger, he heard the bellow-ing voice of a TV preacher: “This isthe day the Lord has made! Let us
rejoice and be glad in it!”“Dr. Schuller,” Juan
said, “those wordsexploded throughmy mind and soul.It was like divineshock therapy. Icouldn’t pull thetrigger. I droppedthe gun, falling on
my knees beside it,and listened to your
every word. I couldhardly wait for the next Sun-
day to arrive. I wondered if you’d beback. You were! And you were therethe next Sunday…and the next…andthe next. In time, I invited JesusChrist into my life.”
Just then, Juan reached into hiscoat pocket, drew out a flat, slenderpackage, and handed it to me, saying,“Thank you, Dr. Schuller. You savedmy life!”
I opened the package to find a
beautiful gold anchor, my initialsinscribed on one side, on an exquisitechain. It was like nothing I’d everseen. I wear it often, and every time Ido, it silently whispers to me thewords of Hebrews 6:19: “…hope isan anchor for the soul.”
Before Juan found God, he wasshipwrecked in the sea of life. How-ever, once he anchored himself to amighty force—faith—Juan leftbehind his shipwrecked life to live abuoyant life anchored in hope.
