MARCH NEWS LETTER 2019

Hi all,

Well here we are, in March already and still a hive of active. With toy workshops, North East Gather-ing, Making of raffle prizes, chasing sponsorship, organising the high country trip, and so it sure is a busy time.

We had another great toy workshop, very productive, big number of members, fantastic atmos-phere. A big thanks to our productive members for another great effort, thank you all.

North East gathering. Is now set in concrete the event will be held on Saturday the 27th

of April. The location will be shared between our clubrooms and the scout hall, the scouts will cater for our lunch, and it is hoped that we will be able to cater for morning and afternoon tea. We still have a some-thing’s to do to make this a great and memorable function but it is now coming together very well.

We have now advertised woodshow change of date and venue quite widely. Sponsors are still prov-ing to be a lot of very hard work but we now have Robyn from the radio station helping us achieve our goals.

The raffle prizes have been started and our small but industrious Wednesday group are having a go, and achieving great things. Any body that would like to lend a hand will be most welcome. Just turn up and I’m sure you will get an enjoyable job.

The 4x4 trip up into the high country. Chris and I went up into the high country to check out the route we would take and the condition of the tracks. We soon made the decision not to take all the tracks I was thinking of, but it will be a very enjoyable trip, taking in the sites including Craig’s Hut. The trip is planed for March 17 there is still room for you to come, just let me know.

We now have an assistant secretary; Rob Osborne is under the pump with work and other things. So Julie Gundrill has stepped in to help out. Julie will now do the minutes along with some other things as required. Thanks Julie.

Don’t forget Shirts / caps are available at the clubrooms. The shirts are only $40.00 cost. Caps are $16.00.

keep the chips flying:- Bob

BOB’S REPORT: Wood Show minor sponsorships have been filled but still unable to find a major Sponsor

even though it’s been dropped down to $2000. Still waiting on Total Tools and Dowell Windows. JH&CO

sent out an email asking if as a club we would like to be included in their newsletter. They came to our club

on 12/02 and interviewed Bob and Chris and took a couple of photos. The article was going to be on their

website. Ebony was going to chase up Justin their boss as he was interested in sponsoring the woodwork

show.

WOOD SHOW SPONSORSHIPS: Major sponsors :- Carrols wood craft supplies. Mooroopna Hardware Makar

auto repairs. Minor sponsors. Liberty Kitchens. Scroll Saw Blades. Maxium Printing. SPC sales. Shepparton

Paint Place. Redback Promotions. Still talking to :- Riverside Newsagents. Total Tools. And others Would be

nice for our members to try to support our sponsors. Need to advertise our new date and new venue, emails

and letters to be sent out.

Raffle Sponsorship- Envisage Furniture sponsoring our raffle. They spent a day cutting down our slabs of Red-

gum. They will also supply cheaper cuts if they are needed. The Olive Board for the coffee table is also looking

pretty good. Everyone please note our new sign on the outside wall as you drive up.

PERRY: The Adviser to run an ad relating to the change of woodshow date. The H.S.M is two thirds of the

timber is ready for the Bookshelf and the Hall Table. Pricing for Timber Sales needs to happen. Panel Saw

is at Liberty Kitchens. After closer inspection it is too big to be stored at Lorraine’s so need to come up with an

alternative.

Deposit not received from Riverlinks. Payment received from Furphy’s. Outstanding Cheque for

Baden Asset Register not yet complete, meeting to be scheduled. Len has organized a cou-

ple of adds in the Australian Woodworker and the C.W.C. and those adds have come out in the pa-

per notifying of the change of dates for our show. Rob has also been notifying clubs. Bob is going to

chase up radio stations and see if he can get on and talk about our show. May have to pay for an

advert. Len had a phone call from Harmony Village. They wanted to know if there was some activ-

ity that the men could do. They have plenty of things for the ladies but find it hard for the men. So

Len and Marilyn organised some wheels and axles, glue and paint and took them down. They will

have a class once a month and after a month Len will have to think of something else for them to

do. Saw Dust. We have an abundance of bags as you would have seen. Council are going to take

it and it will be used on horses. BUT it must be clean. NO STICKS in the bags. Can’t stress that

enough. Please spread the word amongst members. If it has sticks put it in the big red bin

GENERAL BUSSINESS: Vern spoke about the Supervisors Book. The book is for Supervisors who

find things that are not right to fill out the book. Not much is getting done. Things get left on, like

Air conditioners and switches. Whoever the Supervisor is on the day, must make sure that everything

is turned off. All members are to make sure they turn all machines off at the end of their day. It has

been decided that the smoko bell will be rung at a quarter to shut off time so that areas can be

cleaned ready for the next shift or day. A new Blower has been purchased to blow the dust off the

machines. This blower doesn’t have to be put on full to get the dust removed. A gentle touch on the

trigger will do just fine to remove the dust. It gets into all the places a brush cant and once you blow

things gently down, sweep the dust up and put it into the rubbish bin. Nothing is to be put into

the sawdust bags. Welcome to New Members. Also any new members that would like to come talk

to Vern about what they expect to get out of woodworking and if they can think of anything that

could be done better. They are welcome to come have a chat. Tony asked if he could get clarifica-

tion on the invitations that we get. Is it an invitation for us to go visit? Are we expected to go? Do

we have a stall? Bob clarified that it is an Invitation for us to attend and have a stall. We usually do

attend all of these invitations. At the stall we have a Lathe to turn wood and we are able to show-

case our woodturning and sell some items. We need names of people willing to go to these Invita-

tions. It was mentioned that the people who get the newsletter sent out, always receive it after

the meeting. There was a problem with some being returned. With the new look newsletters it took

a little longer but we are aware of the mistakes and its being worked on. It is out of our hands with

Australia Post being slow. Furphy have asked for a photo of the people who worked on restoring

the handles. So could everyone get together and work out a day that they can all go down together

and have a photo taken. Chris has all the names, Perry, Chris, Len, Carl, Joe and Frank. Work out the

date. . BOB: DATES TO REMEMBER: 23rd

Toy Workshop. Many hands make light work. Every-

one who can help then please do. 4th

March Wood Show Sub Committee Meeting. 16th

and 17th

March Kyabram Vintage Rally. Wunghnu Tractor Pull is on the 30th

and 31 of March. Yet to be de-

cided is the 4x4 High Country Trip. Will visit Craig’s Hut and a few other places. There are quite a

few names on the list on the notice board. If you have a four wheel drive and want to go then put

your name on the left hand side. If you don’t have a four wheel drive then put your name on the

right and we will fill back seats of the four wheel drives. No date as yet but envision it to be late

March. April 2nd

is Merrigum Heritage day. April 27th

is the North East Gathering. Need names.

Chris has taken a few names so please let him know. We need to send out replies to let them know

we will be attending. Lindsay asked about the number of young people attending Woodwork now

and does our Insurance cover them. Yes they are covered by our insurance. We do have restrictions

on the very young that they are not to go near the machines on their own. Rob: There was a lady

carving Rocking Horses at the Alternative farm and Machinery Day and she is very happy to come

and attend our show. Her partner carves wheels and he will also attend. He supplied a card. Try El-

more Field Day for getting rid of our wood dust. Thank You to Lindsay Whitford for his very interest-

ing talk on his life behind the badge. The Photo’s were a great way to see how passionate Lindsay

MEMBER BEHIND THE BADGE

Peter Meddings

I was born on the 19th May 1940 to William and Beryl Meddings at Geelong Hospital. I am the eldest of 5

children.

My parents shifted from place to place looking for work, my Dad was working at Pickworths orchard when I

started school. I attended many schools and finished my schooling at Seymour High School.

Finishing school I got a job with Len Mason a builder and I started my apprentice in building. The law

changed and I had to have a school certificate, so Len had to put me off. I then got a job at Viberts Timber

Yards , I trained up and become an A Grade wood machinist, I worked at Viberts for 32 yrs until they sold, I

worked for the new owner but he went broke.

I then got a job at Miracle Australia who made fibreglass play ground equipment and fire truck water tanks

which I enjoyed for 11 years until the business shifted back to Perth W.A.

I was then 57 yrs old and worried about finding another job. I applied for a job at Tatura Milk Factory

working a machine that made gee ( Melting butter down to get the moisture out of it to 99.9 percent butter

oil ) . I did shift work starting at 6 o’clock - 2 o’clock morning shift, 1 o’clock until 9 o’clock afternoon shift. I

worked at Tatura Milk until I retired at 65 yrs of age.

While working at Viberts I met Helene at an Orange Lodge dance. We continued our relationship and

announced our engagement on 22ndb Sep. 1961.

I bought a block of land in Fahey St Shepparton. We started to build our house in June 1963, our house

was the second house to be built in the Cornish Estate. Foundations dug by hand, walls and roof all done by

hand, no roof trusses or walls delivered by truck in those days. Roads and footpaths were just dirt.

Helene and I were married on the 15th Feb 1964 at Wesley Church Shepparton. I continued to work at

Viberts, Helene worked at a children's clothing shop. We both worked hard to get our house nice.

I milked cows in my Christmas holidays 5 cents a cow. Helene’s Dad would get a permit to cut wood in the

swamp, we would go out of a weekend and cut a couple of trailers of wood and sell to friends, also some for

ourselves as we had the open fire in the lounge, and some for Helene’s Mum and Dad.

We have 2 wonderful son’s Stephen and Brian. I joined the GV Woodturners under the guidance of Tom

Tacey and Hunter Fairmaid, I took Roy Ellis out to the meeting at Kialla Central.

When Stephen joined Cubs I would stay at the cub meetings, I was soon asked to help with the testing for

badges etc.

I began training to become a leader, a lot of work mostly at weekends. I became Barloo when I finished

training in 1975 and Akela in 1979. I received my beads, the highest award that a Cub Leader can achieve..

I retired from Cubs in May 1995 and was presented with a plaque and lovely painting for my dedication

and service over the 20 yrs.I was awarded the Silver Wattle for outstanding service to the Scout Movement at

Gilwil Park on the 22nd Feb. 1998.

I joined the Woodturners again after Stephen and Brian went through Cubs and Scouts. I really enjoy the

activities and friend ship. I have made many pieces , segmented bowls, sugar bowls and rocking chairs for

adults and children.

I can’t attend a lot of things held at the Clubrooms as I would like to, owing to ill health.

Helene and I celebrated 55 years together on the 15th Feb. 2019.

We have 5 grandchildren, Alli is a member and learnt to wood turn under the guidance of Don Mc Crabb.
