“Give me a museum and I’ll fill it.”- Pablo Picasso

“Museums should be places where you raise questions, not just show stuff.”

- William Thorsell

Over the past century we have certainly filled the Muskegon Museum of Art with amazing and inspiring artworks (including a few Picassos—thanks Pablo). In fact, of over 5,000 pieces in the permanent collection, we can only show about 125 artworks at one time.

But Mr. Thorsell’s quote above really hits the mark on how we, as a community art museum, present the artwork. As inspiring as artwork can be on its own against a wall—enjoyed in a quiet moment—it also serves as a vehicle for community engagement, programming and education as well as entertainment. We like to think we help build the community around the artwork. And our programming palette provides many opportunities for a wide variety of stories to tell. We do not raise the questions, our visitors and community do.

And our palette is going to run very bright in the coming months. It will be another big spring and summer at the MMA.

On May 2, we are proud to present the inaugural Bennett Prize for Women Figurative Realists. An exciting partnership between Steven Alan Bennett and Elaine Melotti Schmidt, Ed.D., The Pittsburg Foundation and the MMA, The Bennett Prize has been several years in the making. In addition to opening the exhibition that evening, we will be presenting a $50,000 prize to one of the 10 finalists.

And just a week later we will be opening our big summer show, Replay: The Exhibition, which combines art made out of those iconic plastic bricks and pop culture. Also in May we will premier Lights, Camera, Rock n’ Roll: The Music Photography of Paul Jenrdrasiak showcasing incredible famous images from West Michigan concerts over the decades. Odds are that you were in the audience at one of these shows.

All this, including our MMA’s Annual Expressions Student Art Exhibition and more are detailed in your spring MMA Journal.

We hope to see you soon!

Patricia Polacco is well known for her beautifully written and illustrated books that have captured the imaginations of generations of readers. This exhibition highlights a selection of her books that celebrate and honor educators that made a difference in her life. Each book addresses a piece of Patricia’s childhood, from bullying, to learning difficulties, to teachers

that pushed her to be her very best. Her books are honest and sometimes raw, exposing themes or issues that can be difficult to confront. This collection of stories is a striking reminder of the importance that good educators can play in a child’s life.

In Pieces: The Art of Vintage PuzzlesMichael and Kay Olthoff/Thelma and Paul Wiener Gallery

through April 21

Jigsaw puzzles are an international pastime tailored to a myriad range of interests and skill levels. In Pieces: The Art of Vintage Puzzles looks back to the late 19th and early 20th century heyday of the puzzle, as manufacturers across Europe and the United States brought their products to market—as toys for children and adults, teaching aides, advertisements, and promotional gimmicks. This collection presents an intriguing look into the past, an opportunity to see history not through the major events of the day, but through the visual objects that informed peoples’ everyday experience and understanding of their contemporary world.

Rising Voices: The Bennett Prize for Women Figurative RealistsMichael and Kay Olthoff/Thelma and Paul Wiener GalleryTheodore and Joan Operhall Gallery

May 2 throughSeptember 8

In collaboration with Steven Alan Bennett, Elaine Melotti Schmidt, Ed.D., and The Pittsburgh Foundation, the Muskegon Museum of Art is honored to present the inaugural award and exhibition for The Bennett Prize. A stipend/grant-in-aid award, the $50,000 Bennett Prize is given biennially to a woman painter whose principal focus is figurative painting. The Bennett Prize seeks to encourage the pursuit of figurative realism by women painters and provides support over two years to a painter whose work demonstrates excellence in the genre.

The exhibition features 30 works by the ten finalists, presenting a vibrant array of subjects and themes. These ten artists were chosen from a field of 647 entrants from across the United States. Their paintings were selected not only for their technical excellence, but for their emotive and conceptually expressive qualities, for the ability of their artists to tell stories that address both timeless and contemporary issues facing not only women, but society as a whole.

It is the hope of both the founders and the organizers of The Bennett Prize that it will not only elevate women in the visual arts, but also inspire a new generation of artists to make representational paintings that are culturally and critically relevant and engaging.

The $50,000 Prize winner will be announced at the opening on May 2, 2019. After opening at the MMA, Rising Voices will tour nationally. A full-color catalogue with images of the works of the ten finalists and ten additional honorable mention recipients accompanies the show.

Sculptures by award winning LEGO® brick artists The Collective return to the Muskegon Museum of Art in Replay: The Exhibition. Featuring plastic brick sculptures by The Collective, a team of collaborative sculptors, this exhibition is an examination and celebration of American Pop and Geek culture. Eleven large-scale LEGO® brick sculptures comprise the core of the show, including depictions of Alice from Disney’s animated Alice in Wonderland, Goofy frozen in carbonite, a Rubik’s Cube, a Tie Fighter with a starfish for a wing (Tide Fighter), and an oversized soft serve ice cream cone. Adding painting, photography, and mixed media pieces into the mix, the show explores how iconic cartoon, video game, movie, and comic heroes and villains shape our shared culture. These figures are our modern myths, and visitors are invited to share in the delight of recognition and nostalgia and simultaneously enjoy slightly twisted takes on popular characters. For the viewer, the Millenium Falcon drops into the duck-filled sky of a modified thrift store painting, Pikachu peers out from a classic Dutch floral still-life, Donald Duck dines with Darth Vader, and Pac-Man races across the surface of multiple images around the gallery.

Exhibiting artists include: Don Morris, Isabelle Bergot, Curtis Gannon, Oscar Gutierrez, Dina Belenko, Michael Loeb, John Padlo, Jared Yamahata, YoMeryl, Nathaniel St. Amour, The Collective, Greg Guillemin, Dave Pollot, and Karlo Henry Velazquez.

New Acquisition

Arthur Bowen Davies was a major figure in American Art in the early 20th century, showing as part of The Eight at Macbeth Gallery and working as one of the primary organizers of the seminal 1913 Armory Show. He was also one of the most noted and financially successful painters of his day.

Davies was born in Utica, New York, and at a young age aspired to be an artist. He was particularly attracted to the Tonalist works of George Inness, an influence that informed his early style. Davies studied at the Chicago Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago before moving back to New York and studying at the Art Students League. Davies became best known for his ethereal, Symbolist inspired figurative works, of which Driobe and her Handmaidens is a fine example.

As President of the Association of American Painters and Sculptors, Davies was a leading force behind the organization of the 1913 Armory Show, alongside Walt Kuhn and Walter Pach. The show introduced American audiences to artists such as Marcel Duchamp and Henri Matissse, and the avant-garde movements of Impressionism, Fauvism, and Cubism.

Late 19th to early 20th century American paintings are one of the core strengths of the MMA permanent collection, and Davies was a major figure during this time period. Of The Eight, we currently hold paintings by Robert Henri and Ernest Lawson, prints by John Sloan, and a watercolor by Maurice Prendergast. The addition of Davies leaves only William Glackens, George Luks, and Everett Shinn unrepresented in our holdings.

The subject matter, bold colors, and classical figuration of Driobe and her Handmaidens is exemplary of Davies’ career, a curious blending of traditional and modern influences. This piece is dated shortly before the showing of The Eight at Macbeth Gallery in 1908.

Pictures of the Best Kind Treasures from the Permanent CollectionBettye Clark Cannon Gallery

Over the past century, the MMA has built a reputation as home to one of the most renowned collections of art among small museums throughout the country. Pictures of the Best Kind features masterworks by legendary artists you might otherwise find in big-city art museums—Hopper, Degas, Whistler, Curry, Turner, Bonnard, Hawthorne, Sisley, Cranach, and more; including some the most important African American artists of the past century, such as Hughie Lee-Smith and Henry Ossawa Tanner; as well as showcasing major glass works from Louis Comfort Tiffany to Dale Chihuly.

Join us for a performance by acclaimed folk musicians Kieran Kane and Rayna Gellert. Kieran Kane has been referred to as “the godfather of Americana music” for good reason. His seminal work in The O’Kanes and Kane Welch Kaplin, as well as co-founding the independent label Dead Reckoning Records, laid the foundation for the contemporary world of Americana music.

Rayna Gellert turned to Appalachian old-time music at a young age, becoming a prodigious fiddler, and leading a new revival of American stringband music through her work with the acclaimed roots band Uncle Earl.

Kieran and Rayna met at San Francisco’s celebrated Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival, which led to co-writing songs for Kieran’s recent album, Unguarded Moments (Dead Reckoning).

They joined forces again for Rayna’s 2017 release, Workin’s Too Hard (StorySound Records). Their first duo album, The Ledges, was released in February on Dead Reckoning Records. Musical kindred-spiritedness is evident in their restrained and roots-oriented approach songs and arrangements.

Art and the JourneySpeaker: Lori EslickWednesday, May 15, 10:30 amWhen looking at art, you can be transported to those moments that an artist has while creating: the art of mindfulness, really. Lori will share insights into some of her creative moments and hopes to encourage others to pursue their creative gifts. Lori McElrath Eslick is an artist and art educator. Her art career began at the Hallmark Company, where she designed and created greeting cards from 1981 to 1987. The Hudson River School: Artistic PioneersThursday, March 14(74 mins.) In the vicinity of New York’s Hudson River Valley, the Adirondack Mountains, Catskill Mountains, and the White Mountains of New Hampshire, a group of American painters led by British born artist Thomas Cole forged an artistic vision of the American wilderness. They would bring nineteenth-century America to life on canvas through imagination, interpretation, color, and conviction, and they would craft an idealistic, identifiable narrative of an ever–changing nation.

National Gallery of Art: American Art SeriesThis series about American artists from the National Gallery of Art presents six nineteenth-century artists who are staples in art history. The biographical commentary and content provides a guide to each of the artists’ artistic progress and individual achievements.

Artist and MotherThursday, May 9(56 mins.) In this episode of ArtBound, we explore the profiles of four California artists who make motherhood a part of their art: Kenyatta A.C. Hinkle, Andrea Chung, Rebecca Campbell, and Tanya Aguiñiga. There’s a persisting assumption in contemporary art circles that you can’t be both a good artist and a good mother. These artists are working to shatter this cliché, juggling demands of career and family and finding inspiring ways to explore the maternal in their art.

Conversation with Françoise GilotThursday, May 23(56 mins.) Acclaimed artist, critic, and author Françoise Gilot discusses her life and career in this 1998 interview with Charlie Rose.
