We are excited to share with you what we have going on in Hancock County 4-H in March and April. It is that me of year again when fair book changes have been made, and the 2020 fair books have been posted. Be sure to check out the 2020 Livestock Changes, there are some big changes coming for fair 2020. As everyone begins to think of fair again we have set a few important dates for you to review; weigh-ins for sheep and goats, swine tagging and idenficaon, along with rabbit Q&A sessions, and YQCA face to face trainings for those 4-12th graders who plan to show livestock at the 2020 fair. FairEntry tweaks are being completed to get the 2020 fair season rolling. As the warmer weather sets in dont forget it is never too early to start on those non- livestock fair projects! Take into consideraon one of our pre-planned monthly workshops, where you leave with a completed project just needing paperwork to be fair ready! With spring fast approaching it means it is me for our 5th Annual Family Fun Night! It will be on Friday, March 20 from 5:30-8:00pm at the GHV Elementary School. We will have pizza, craſts and games, face painng, and the Hansen Family Juggling! It will be a fun night for everyone in the family! Livestock Rule Changes General

bull ALL LIVESTOCK WILL BE INSPECTED PRIOR TO BEING UNLOADED Any health discrepancies will be dealt with by a fair vet and may be sent home

bull Any health issues found may require all animals of the same species in that trailer to be sent home

bull ALL LIVESTOCK COUNTY AND DISTRICT EXHIBITORS WILL BE REQUIRED TO HAVE HEALTH PAPERS (ONLY VALID UP TO 30 PRIOR TO EXHIBITION FOR BEEF GOATS HORSE RABBITS amp POULTRY) ALL SWINE HEALTH PAPERS MUST BE NO MORE THAN 7 DAYS PRIOR TO EXHIBITION AND ALL SHEEP HEALTH PAPERS MUST BE NO MORE THAN 14 DAYS PRIOR TO EXHIBITION

bull HANCOCK COUNTY DISTRICT FAIR WILL BE ALLOWING THE USE OF RACTOPAMINE (AKA PAYLEAN)

bull Due to the main packers becoming Ractopamine-free (Paylean-free) the market price for show pigs exposed to the additive could be significantly lower Potentially the swine sold at in the Hancock County Fair auction may have a base price much lower than market price on the auction day

bull Smithfield last yearrsquos hog buyer has become a Ractopamine-free facility Since hogs being shown at the Hancock County Fair could be fed Ractopamine or be cross- contaminated with the product a new buyer needed to be identified The pigs sold at the auction will be trucked to a processing plant in Illinois Due to the increased transportation cost a trucking fee will be charged to all swine exhibitors selling hogs in the auction

County Fair Exhibitors must weigh-in bull Market Sheep bull Commercial Ewes bull Market Meat Goats Weigh-in is Saturday April 18 830-1030 am at the fairgrounds Lotto lamb drawing will begin promptly at 830 am You must be present when the order is picked to hold your spot If you have any questions contact Taylor at 641-923-2856 or nelsontiastateedu

Iowa State Fair swine need a DNA punch The punches cost $8 each In addition to the DNA punch they need a USDA tag $1 each Tags can be purchased at the Extension Office County fair tags cost $1 each and can be picked up at the Extension Office Office hours are Monday-Friday 800 am - 430 pm All 4-H swine need to be tagged and IDrsquoed in 4-H Online by May 15 More information will be sent to 4-Hers enrolled in the swine project area Questions Call or email Taylor at 641-923-2856 or nelsontiastateedu

This spring we will be getting into the lab and learning about STEM Our after school team will be learning how agriculture and science go hand in hand how they can become mechanical engineers what lemons have to do with electricity and crazy chemical reactions They will be bringing home projects from their lab that they will see grow and ideas that they can experiment with at home Our ASK STEM Labs will meet Mondays at the GHV Elementary and Tuesday at the WH Elementary in March

BUCKET BOTTLE Fair books for livestock shows non-livestock shows

horticulture and pre 4-H exhibitions are now available They can be found online at our Extension website listed below Hard copies can be picked up at the Extension Office or leaders can take copies for club meetings All other fair forms can also be found on our fair website wwwextensioniastateeduhancock or wwwhancockcountyfaircom

The Bucket Bottle CalfLamb Goat show is for Preschool - 8th grade at the Hancock County District Fair

Here is a reminder of the rules for this popular show bull Calflambgoat must be

born between March 1- June 1 of the current year

bull Exhibitor must take possession of animal within 2 weeks of birth

bull Pre 4-H animals must be tagged and identified on paper by July 1 (4-H animal must be tagged and identified in 4-H Online by June 15)

bull All bucket bottle animals must submit an entry in the FairEntry system by July 1 at 1159 pm

bull Animal must be bucket or bottle fed no nursing

bull Animal will be shown at halter in the show ring

bull Judging will be based on knowledge of exhibitor and health of calflambgoat

ALL BUCKET BOTTLE ANIMALS ARE REQUIRED TO HAVE A HEALTHER PAPER TO TURN IN TO THE FAIR OFFICE UPON ARRIVAL TO THE FAIRGROUNDS

2020 FAIR BOOKS NOW AVAILABLE

YQCA - REQUIRED TRAINING ALL 4-H (4th-12th grade) exhibitors who plan to show beef (including bucketbottle calf) sheep swine dairy rabbit poultry or goats at County or State Fair MUST be YQCA certified WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS 1 You can attend a face to face YQCA training ($3 fee)

Britt Sunday March 29 7-830 pm or Garner Saturday April 18 430-600 pm 2 You can participate in the online YQCA training ($12 fee) 3 You can test out if you are 12 or 15 years old as of January 1 (fee is determined upon

what test option you are taking) Contact Extension Office for more information about this option

We want to welcome a new club to Hancock County 4-H The Garden club was created to help 4-Herrsquos plant grow take care and exhibit vegetable and flowers at the Hancock County Fair Lynelle Kohlmeyer has been working with Nikki to create a fun environment for the kids to learn and grow The club is open to all 3-12 grade kids in Hancock County They plan on meeting monthly until closer to summer then they will meet when needed to take care of their garden The Garden Clubrsquos first meeting is Thursday March 5 at 700 at the Hancock county Extension If you are interested in learning more about joining this club please contact Nikki at 641-923-2856 or nrenneriastateedu

bull Smithfield last yearrsquos hog buyer has become a Ractopamine-free facility Since hogs being shown at the Hancock County Fair could be fed Ractopamine or be cross- contaminated with the product a new buyer needed to be identified The pigs sold at the auction will be trucked to a processing plant in Illinois Due to the increased transportation cost a trucking fee will be charged to all swine exhibitors selling hogs in the auction

We want to welcome a new club to Hancock County 4-H The Garden club was created to help 4-Herrsquos plant grow take care and exhibit vegetable and flowers at the Hancock County Fair Lynelle Kohlmeyer has been working with Nikki to create a fun environment for the kids to learn and grow The club is open to all 3-12 grade kids in Hancock County They plan on meeting monthly until closer to summer then they will meet when needed to take care of their garden The Garden Clubrsquos first meeting is Thursday March 5 at 700 at the Hancock county Extension If you are interested in learning more about joining this club please contact Nikki at 641-923-2856 or nrenneriastateedu

We want to welcome a new club to Hancock County 4-H The Garden club was created to help 4-Herrsquos plant grow take care and exhibit vegetable and flowers at the Hancock County Fair Lynelle Kohlmeyer has been working with Nikki to create a fun environment for the kids to learn and grow The club is open to all 3-12 grade kids in Hancock County They plan on meeting monthly until closer to summer then they will meet when needed to take care of their garden The Garden Clubrsquos first meeting is Thursday March 5 at 700 at the Hancock county Extension If you are interested in learning more about joining this club please contact Nikki at 641-923-2856 or nrenneriastateedu
