“You shall not carve idols for yourselves in the shape of anything…” (Exodus 20:4) How many “gods” do you put before God? “Idols” do not always take the shape of physical things, things we can touch and feel. Those are easy to recognize. Many times they take the form of things we cannot touch and are much harder to spot like pride, power, ego, time, comfort or health. Pray for God’s help to prune our vices and to grow in virtue.

A Message From Fr. Mateus
My dear brothers and sisters,
The episode of the Purifica on of the Temple, which features Jesus expelling vendors from his Father's house, appears in the four Gospels. On this 3rd Sunday of Lent, the liturgy uses the version of St. John for the medita on of the faithful. In the Old Testament, Jews needed to go up to the Temple in Jerusalem every
year, during the Passover celebra on, to offer sacrifices for their sins. They came from the four corners of Israel and, therefore, could not bring the animals with them. The priests then began to sell animals in the Temple, so that the Jews could fulfill their religious precepts, according to the Mosaic law. Gradually, how-ever, this prac ce became corrupted and the Temple became a real marketplace. That is why we see Jesus, full of anger and zeal for the house of the Lord, expelling those money changers and then announcing the proximity of the true redemp ve sacrifice.
But, what is a sacrifice a er all?
Today's culture is not used to making sacrifices, nor does it know the meaning and importance of that act. Now, sacrifice is a way of uni ng with God and, in the Old Testament, this ritual could be prac ced according to three symbolic formulas, as a kind of sacramental system.
First, there was the atoning sacrifice, for which some animal was sacrificed in repara on for our sins. It is from this sacrifice that the famous expression “scapegoat” emerges. Second, there was the peaceful sacrifice, which was the offering of part of an animal to the priest and part of it to be burned. The priests ate the por on offered to them as a symbol of union with the vic m. And finally, there was the holocaust, which was a complete sacrifice of worship offering everything.
The purpose of the sacrifice was, ul mately, to purify man's heart from their sins and redeem them before God. But the sacrificial system itself ended up being corrupted and becoming a “marketplace”, as Jesus says at the summit of his indigna on. He takes the whip to teach them a lesson: we must approach God with a pure heart, the real sacrifice is to offer ourselves totally to God. Jesus takes the whip and whips any form of “theology of prosperity”, of commerce in which, instead of serving God, we are the ones who want to use Him. Jesus does not want a trade with our selfishness, He wants our heart.
But Jesus not only whips, He offers himself as a vic m in our place. Since we are unable to offer our-selves in sacrifice, He offers himself: "I have destroyed this Temple, and in three days I will raise it up". And his sacrifice is the synthesis and perfec on of all the sacrifices of the Old Testament: He expiates our sins, taking upon himself all our miseries; He makes a peaceful sacrifice, interceding for us before the Father; He lives the holocaust, giving himself en rely on the cross, to the last drop of his blood, to give us a new life.
This, then, is the grace of Lent. Through the merits of Jesus' sacrifice, we can overcome our heart of stone and, like Him, give ourselves completely to the crosses of our daily life. And, at Holy Mass, we receive the strength of the Eucharist, which is the upda ng of the same sacrifice two thousand years ago, to make progress in faith, hope and charity. In this way, our heart gradually becomes the Eucharis c heart of Jesus.
Have a wonderful week!
Father Mateus
