NEWS & EVENTS

The cleansing of the temple shows Jesus in a moment of righteous anger — not something we see very often. In this passage, Jesus is angry at the misuse of the temple area. He sees people bartering over mere pennies, animals being bought for sacrifice, and people milling about in a space designated for prayer and worship. This all seems foreign to us, as our churches do not resemble this chaotic scene. Or do they? Are we good stewards of our space? Jesus was angered at the lack of reverence in His Father’s house. Do we struggle with this in our own church? Do we approach the sanctuary in awe, knowing that God is present there? Do we pray in earnest, or mumble our way through the Mass? Jesus taught that animal sacrifices were not necessary, yet the people continued to try and outdo each other with their offerings. What about your offering? Is it a gift of self, coming from a loving heart? Jesus wanted the temple to be a place of worship for ALL people, yet there were divisions that segregated particular groups to particular areas. Is there anything about your parish that keeps the seeking stranger from finding God? Is it a welcoming place? Are YOU welcoming? We must not be so arrogant as to think we are better than those we read about in today’s gospel. Instead, we should strive to be perfect stewards of the time and space that God has given us.

LENTEN FORMATION SERIES: DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS BY ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYLA

This Lent our priests will lead five weekly 45 minute talks about the discernment of spirits. The discern-ment of spirits, given to us by St. Ignatius of Loyola, is the act of interpreting our interior movements (thoughts, emotions, desires) to discern their origin and know how God is leading us in our lives. If you would like to learn more about practical, everyday discernment in your life, please join us on Sunday, March 7 at 11 am for the third talk in the Pius X room (above the parish offices). The 3rd meeting in Span-ish will be on Thursday, March 11 at 7 pm in Good Shepherd Hall.

Baptism Parents: Must be parishioners of the Cathedral and be registered at least 1 month before baptism. They must present a copy of the child's birth certificate so that all names are spelled correctly on the baptismal certificate. Godparents: They must be married by the Catholic Church and they must present their marriage certificate (a photo is acceptable). They have to be confirmed and they must present their certificate of confirmation (a photo is acceptable). If they are not parishioners of the Cathedral, they must present a letter of permission from their parish priest where they attend Mass. Single sponsors: They must be over 16 years old. They must present a copy of their confirmation certificate. Parents who are not parishioners: If you want your child to be baptized in the Cathedral, parents must present a letter of permission from their parish priest where they are registered, and all the documents mentioned above. (For example, when the godparents are parishioners and the parents come to the Cathedral from another parish to baptize.) All must present a certificate or letter verifying that they took the baptism class. Baptism Classes in English: 1st Wednesday of the month at 7:00 p.m. in the Marian Room; located on second floor of the parish office. Registration is required. Baptisms: Monthly on 2nd Saturdays at 6:15 p.m. and monthly on 2nd Sundays at 11:15 a.m. Please call the parish receptionist to register for Baptism class and/or arrange the baptism date at 263-6574.
