Growing Online Jennie Smythe, Pinky Gonzales and John Zarling stressed the need for creativity in online advertising. Social networking was explained as a way to understand and receive feedback.

Engaging the X/Y Consumer CAA: Intelligence Group presented an in-depth look at the motives and characteristics of Generation Y. Music, shopping, entertainment, travel, lifestyles and employment were all discussed in the views of the unique age group.

Ideas In 60 Seconds Jimmy Rector moderated this fast-paced panel, which featured free beer and the occasional “social drink” with the crowd when an explanation went beyond the 30 second mark. Suggestions included everything from videocasting and online music testing to random acts of kindness done by station staffers and spending a day just listening to the radio. “Mark Chase made us spend a day listening to our competitors,” recalled Ken Boesen. “You’d be surprised what you’re not hearing.”

Research 101 Inside a station music meeting, with criteria discussed including tempo, familiarity, artist strength, sales, fatigue, competitor spins and more. Another relatively new evaluation tool: downloads -- a factor which Rusty Walker said “were enough that it just about created Taylor Swift. It really got her off the launch pad.” WCRS Live BMI and Country Aircheck sponsored WCRS Live!, featuring performances by Jennifer Hanson, Dean Dillon, Eric Church and Casey Beathard. Country Aircheck opened the event by presenting songwriter Jim Beavers with a plaque recognizing his recent No. 1 “Watching Airplanes.”

Sony BMG Riverboat Label veep Tom Baldrica opened the cruise – which was wall-to-wall with programmers – by introducing Sony BMG’s latest signing, Craig Morgan. Baldrica then brought out as his co-host CNN Headline News anchor Robin Meade. And then the music began. Jypsi, Chuck Wicks, Kellie Pickler, Miranda Lambert, Chris Young, Sara Evans, Brad Paisley and Kenny Chesney all performed. Dann Huff joined Wicks on guitar. Producer James Stroud on drums, Tony Joe White on guitar and harmonica, and guitarist Brent Mason backed Young. Baldrica predicted a No. 1 all-genre sales debut for Alan Jackson’s Good Time. And Chesney determinedly dragged SBMG Chairman Joe Galante on stage for the finale.

The Day Ahead CRS-39 proceedings for Friday, March 7:

8-8:30am Manager’s Breakfast NCC 211-212

Morning Show Marvels This session brimmed with tips for developing compelling content, most of which centered around real life. Premier’s Big D & Bubba discussed their focus on prep and extensive editing, while Brian Egan urged personalities not to neglect their home life. “They’re not children, they’re show prep,” moderator Valerie Gellar quipped.

Boom Or Bust Play MPE’s Dean Ernst, Edison Media Research’s Sean Ross and Pollack Media Group’s Jim Kerr stayed relatively unified in voting top buzz technologies boom or bust. HD Radio was a unanimous Bust, while 360 label deals were split down the middle and the iPhone, DRM-Free Music, Mobile As A Distribution Channel, Internet Radio, Recommendations Engine and User Generated Content all fell under Boom.

Woman To Woman Meg Stevens, Connie Bradley, Julie Talbott, Tammy Genovese and Laurie DeYoung shared wisdom, laughter, and trade secrets with the packed house. All five agreed hard work is the ultimate key to success. “Try to assemble a great team and then let them do their jobs,” said Stevens. “It’s all about a team. Because when everyone has the same goal to win, that’s how you get there.”

Life Of A Song MCA’s EJ Bernas moderated as artists and label pros offered a insight to a song’s success. Luke Bryan and Billy Currington performed the latter’s No. 1 hit “Good Directions,” which Bryan co-wrote.

Sony BMG Luncheon Tom Baldrica kicked off the luncheon, calling it “Jimmy Rector’s Redneck Revolution.” Keith Anderson performed new music before rocking out with surprise guests Foster & Lloyd on their hit “Crazy Over You.” Guests were then treated to a video narrated by Kris Kristofferson focusing on The Johnny Cash Show before Montgomery Gentry took the stage to perform new music in addition to their hits.

Sonic Architecture Moderator Jack Ingram and panelists Jay McCarthy, Brian James, Matt Ganssle and Mike McMay discussed imaging that sets stations apart. Focus on offering something the listener can store away to identify with the station. Repeat things – but not too much. Try not to water down a promo with sponsor details. Take chances every chance you get and keep the proverbial door open to anyone who has ideas.

Flex Your Promo Pecs Details on several successful, large-scale, multi-dimensional sales-driven promotions were offered, and will be posted soon on at www.crb.org.
