Distance Learning
Distance Learning has uploaded the Summer 2018
schedule on Michigan Colleges Online (MCO). MCO
allows students the opportunity to take classes that are not
available at their own college while still receiving support
services from their “home” college. All credits earned at
“provider colleges” transfer back to the student’s home
college.
Distance Learning is highlighting professional development
opportunities for all faculty to promote innovation and engagement in
the classroom.

David C. Butty received the following note from
Carina Caldwell, Interim Executive Director,
Community Colleges for International Development
(CCID):
“I hope you are doing well. I wanted to touch base
with you regarding a couple of items. First, I wanted
to thank you so much for your fantastic submissions
for our Quarterly Newsletter, you always have great
stories to share and I really enjoy learning about
what you are doing up at WCCCD. It is clear that
you have done a fantastic job of creating
international opportunities for students and faculty
at your school and I believe you represent a vital
sector of CCID membership that often does not
have a seat at the table regarding the mission,
vision and direction of CCID.
Secondly, I just had a great conversation with our
contacts at the British Council and they are looking
to develop a sponsored 2019 Spring Break trip to
the UK for U.S. Community College students.”
Commendation and Kudos toDavid C. Butty, Dean of the
Study Abroad Program

Division of Institutional Effectiveness
During Fall 2017, IE in conjunction with academic leaders across the District, administered the
Student Satisfaction Inventory (SSI) Survey. WCCCD students identified items of importance to
them. Below you will find some sample data from the results on elements regarding academic
advising:
The Division of Institutional Effectiveness
(IE) reviews national research trends to
assist divisions, programs, and the District
with planning initiatives. According to the
Gallup 2017 College Student Survey
Report, “students receive helpful advice
about courses and programs from
academic advisers, but less so about
careers and post-graduation plans.” In the
figure to the right you will find sample data
points from the Gallup article regarding
academic advising.

Tech Tip of the Week
Spear phishing is a special type of fraud, usually
conducted through email, which appears as
though it comes from a legitimate source and
requests personal or confidential information
from you, or attempts to trick you into installing
malicious software by clicking on a link or
opening an attachment. Always be suspicious of
emails, even if they appear to come from a
trusted source. When in doubt, call the sender
and ask if they sent the email.
