March 3, 2021 www.excelsior-academy.org Dear Parents, Excelsior Academy's Ballroom team came through with flying colors this weekend. They attended the UBEA State Championships on Saturday. They took 2nd place in the Junior High Swing Showdance and 1st place in the Junior High Latin Medley. As Mr. Williams, our Ballroom Coach said, "They danced very well and represented Excelsior Academy in a most excellent way." We congratulate our ballroom dancers and send a heartfelt thank you to Mr. Williams for his fun loving way and diligence in teaching superb ballroom dance technique. We have begun a new month. March is Women's History Month. The Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, and several organizations and museums commemorate the vital role of women in American history during this celebratory month. Mrs. Nay's eighth grade United States History class has prepared a Women of History poster provided by the supporting organizations. We have included a picture of them in our newsletter. I came upon an inspiring story that fits well into Excelsior's theme of "Revolutionaries" and our efforts to teach our students perseverance. It was written by Christopher Brito, a Journalist with CBS news. His article features Diana Trujillo, a Colombian aerospace engineer at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Ms. Trujillo wanted to understand the universe while she was a child in Cali, Columbia. She took a courageous step when she was just 17 years old by coming to the United States. She had only $300.00 and did not speak any English. She worked housekeeping jobs to pay for her college tuition. She was grateful to be cleaning. She looked at it as an opportunity to buy food and have a home in which to sleep. Even now, as a lead engineer at JPL and responsible for the robotic arm of the Perseverance rover, she sees her difficult start as advantageous. It has given her a different perspective that reminds her to appreciate every instance in life. She looks back at the moment when she was to declare her major at the University of Florida. She noticed no one else in the line spoke Spanish nor looked Hispanic and she was one of the few women. It was a petrifying experience. She found herself thinking, "You shouldn't be here...why are you here?" Yet, she did not give in to those fears. Many years later as a successful aerospace engineer she approaches the work place with these thoughts. "I know I'm not walking in there alone," ...."every single thing that I do, I'm representing my country, my culture, my heritage, my people, and I have to give my best every single time." She realizes that through her work, (she) "gets to elevate and amplify (her) culture and all the countries that speak Spanish by sending a message to everybody that we're here, we're present..." Currently, Hispanics make up only 8% of the STEM workforce. Hispanic women comprise only 2% of the 8% total. These statistics come from the Student Research Foundation. Ms. Trujillo is determined to open the way for more Hispanics to join the STEM workforce. She believes more role models in the field is the solution. With this in mind, she hosted NASA's first-ever Spanish language broadcast for a planetary landing. The show was called "Juntos perseveramos, " or "together we persevere." It was watched by more than 2.5 million viewers.

Ms. Trujillo is a "Revolutionary." She was not thrown into a dramatic change like Excelsior students and teachers, by having to learn a new way to be a teacher and a student, from the mitigating factors of the pandemic. Rather, she chose to jump into a dramatic change to make her life better. She is an example of courage and perseverance. Excelsior salutes her revolutionary way.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Stephanie Eccles Executive Director

Diana Trujillo

Queridos padres,

Ella pensó : "No deberías estar aquí ...

Atentamente

Sra. Stephanie Eccles Directora Ejecutiva

Diana Trujillo
