Teaching Strategy and Resource
One way to have students develop cultural understanding and empathy is by having them “Write to the Source.” This pedagogical strategy is best embodied as a performance task where students are required to rely on textual evidence to respond to writing prompts around the themes of identity, diversity, justice and action. Twenty-two student tasks for various grade levels can be found here: https://www.tolerance.org/classroom-resources/student-tasks/write-to-the-source

Virginia Conference for Social Studies Educators
October 25th-26th, 2019
The theme of this year's conference is "Voices of Democracy." The Virginia Council for the Social Studies is seeking proposals that incorporate this theme into engaging and
thought provoking presentations for educators at all levels. Interpretations of the theme might
include:
What does civil discourse look and sound like in a democratic society? How have the voices of democracy changed over time?
How is history examined and shared? How is it heard and understood? What can be done to include and amplify marginalized voices in our society?
How do the arts and humanities serve as a vehicle for civic engagement? How do we inspire our students to take an active role in our democracy?
Proposals must be submitted by April 30, 2019.
Here's the link to submit your proposal online: Proposal Link
