ABOUT THE JOHN WILLIAM & FLORENCE DEAN MINTONSTUDENT AWARDS CEREMONY AND LECTURE SERIES
The Student Awards Ceremony and Lecture Series is named in honor of John William Minton and Florence Dean Minton. Their daughter, the late Polly Minton McLeRoy of Sherman, Texas, established and endowed the lecture series in 1993 to honor her parents. In more recent years, Mrs. McLeRoy’s son, William McLeRoy, graciously endorsed the concept of a ceremony to recognize the achievements of Baylor Law students to honor the memory of his grandparents and their lives’ work, and at which the students would be addressed by a notable, inspiring speaker.
John William Minton was born in 1875 and graduated with an LL.B. from the University of Texas School of Law. In 1910, he was appointed to fill an unexpired term in the Texas Legislature from Sabine County; he subsequently was elected to the position and served in the Legislature through 1914. Thereafter, he had a successful practice in Hemphill until his death in 1959. He particularly was noted for his early advocacy in connection with East Texas timber interests. Florence Dean Minton was also born in Sabine County and was an active civic and church volunteer.
Mr. and Mrs. Minton had five children. Their daughter, Mrs. McLeRoy, who passed away in 2003, was a graduate of Texas Woman’s University. A retired school teacher, she was an active member of the Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy. She had two sons, William and the late Richard McLeRoy. The focus of this ceremony on student achievement is one which honors the life aims of Mrs. McLeRoy as a teacher.
John Henry Minton, Mrs. McLeRoy’s brother, graduated from Baylor Law in 1925. His sons, John H. Minton, Jr., of Tyler, and Robert M. Minton of Henderson, also were Baylor Law graduates. Numerous other members of the Minton family have attended and graduated from Baylor University and Baylor Law.

Attorney Darrell Lee Keith, founder of the Keith Law Firm, P.C. in Fort Worth, Texas, is recognized as one of America’s and Texas’ premier trial attorneys in representing injured victims in complex medical, legal, and professional malpractice and personal injury law and litigation cases. His educational background includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Baylor University in 1968 and a Juris Doctor degree from Baylor Law in 1970.
With a courtroom style which blends a mastery of trial advocacy with an outgoing, charismatic, highly competitive, zealous, and well-prepared approach, Keith has prosecuted many major cases in his practice areas in the trial and appellate courts across Texas. Keith, a self-styled “modern-day gun fighter” whose personal trademarks are his “Johnny Cash - black” attire, black flat-brimmed cowboy hat, and longish white hair, describes himself as a “simple country plaintiff ’s trial lawyer.” And as a plaintiff ’s trial lawyer, Keith has a distinguished record in medical, legal, and professional malpractice and personal injury law and litigation. He has achieved many multimillion-dollar and million-dollar verdicts and settlements for innocent victims of malpractice and other tortious conduct. His trial court verdicts in several cases have been significant ground-breaking results for clients in separate medical malpractice trials in Texas.
Recognized for excellence in his practice areas, Keith has been named to The Best Lawyers in America list for the last 20 years, the Texas Super Lawyers list since 2003, a Top 100 Texas Super Lawyer - 2003, 2005, and 2007, the Dallas Area Best Lawyers Medical Malpractice Lawyer of the Year for 2011, the Dallas Area Best Lawyers Professional Malpractice Lawyer of the Year for 2012, a Texas Trial Legend by the Dallas

Additionally, Keith has been featured, profiled, or interviewed in national and Texas media, including CBS News 48 Hours, NBC Nightly News, CNN, The New York Times, Texas Monthly, Dallas Morning News, Houston Chronicle, Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Fort Worth Business Press, and many other electronic and print media. He is a former president of the Tarrant County Trial Lawyers Association and continues to serve on its board of directors. Keith was also honored by his invited presentation of the commencement address at the Baylor Law fall graduation program in 1997, and his invited presentations at investiture ceremonies for two justices on the Texas Second Court of Appeals in 2008 and 2018.
Through their nonprofit foundation, Darrell and his wife Susan have made numerous financially contributions to Baylor University and Baylor Law, including the Sesquicentennial Walkway, Ferrell Center Basketball Practice Facility, Law School Building Campaign, the tall “Spiritwalker” bear sculpture by the sculptors, Gene and Rebecca Toby, in front of the Baylor Law building, and the Baylor Law Review Association Endowment. Further, the Keith’s foundation has funded a designated courtroom, a professorship in law and medicine, and an annual law student scholarship in law and medicine. Baylor University has bestowed the James Huckins and Pat Neff Medallions upon the Keith’s in recognition of their philanthropy to the University.
