As we enter Holy Week and celebrate Palm Sunday, let’s reflect on how our Lord suffered from our indifference: those who proclaimed him king of Jerusalem were the same who called to crucify him. We recognize we are all one human family. Are we contributing to the suffering of our sisters and brothers with our indifference to their realities? How does our faith inspire us to care for them and share the gifts that God has bestowed on us? Visit www.crsricebowl.org to learn more.

Above, Valérie Aimée Raharison, age 32, feeds her two-year-old son Marela, one of her four children with her husband Roderique Grégoire. She participates in CRS’ Fararano Project, which has taught her cooking techniques to improve nutrition for her and her family. One simple technique is called “rainbow food,” which is a simple method of mixing various types of healthy ingredients in a way many people in southern Madagascar don’t typically do, so that it improves flavor and encourages health eating habits of nutritious food. The project also encourages her and others to grow vegetable gardens to provide ready-available healthy food options. In some rural communities in Madagascar where rates of malnourished children are among the highest, households do not understand the gravity of poor nutrition. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) has designed and introduced an innovative approach called Community-Led Total Nutrition (CLTN) as part of the Fararano Project so that entire communities - fathers, mothers, traditional authorities and youth - can contribute to improved nutrition. They all work together to ensure that all children have access to better food and nutrition. To read more and hear other stories, go to: bit.ly/3s34c3V

Tre Ore, or “The Three Hours,” is a traditional Good Friday devotion commemorating the three hours that Christ hung in agony on the cross. Observed from noon until 3:00 pm, Tre Ore offers the faithful an opportunity to pray at the foot of the cross as Jesus gives his life for our salvation. Communal gatherings to remember Jesus’ time on the cross are an ancient custom of the Church; there is evidence of such practices in fourth-century Jerusalem. While there is no set form to Tre Ore, the orders of celebration commonly used today have roots in the devotion created by Peruvian Jesuit Fr. Alonso Mesia. It is believed that Fr. Mesia developed his original version of Tre Ore around 1690, and its popularity spread from his native Lima to Spain, Italy, and the rest of Europe. Just as in Fr. Mesia’s devotion, Tre Ore celebrations today usually include reflections on the Seven Last Words of Christ as he hung on the cross. Scripture readings, songs, communal prayers, and periods of silence round out the observance. It is also common for the Three Hours to end with the Way of the Cross. Our MQP commemoration of Tre Ore will be an adaptation of Fr. Mesia’s devotion and will include modern translations of some of his prayers. Deacons and lay ministers from our parish will offer the reflections on the Seven Last Words, and our talented MQP musicians will provide prayerful music. People may drop in or leave any time during Tre Ore, which takes place on Good Friday from 12:00 to 3:00 pm. Come to pray at the foot of the cross for 10 or 15 minutes, or for the full three hours. Our Tre Ore will end with the Stations of the Cross in English, beginning around 2:30 pm. ~ Article written by Julianna Castro, Pastoral Assistant for Liturgy

Catholic Relief Services Helps our World in so Many Ways During March, the CRS Parish Ambassador Ministry has been sharing a bit about Catholic Relief Services and the many different ways it works in our world. Today we’ll share still another way CRS helps those in need: working with refugees. Read the incredible story of Hawa Minta in Mali. Her mother-in-law called to say that her town had been attacked, and nearly 200 of her friends and neighbors were on the run, looking for somewhere safe to hide. Minta, a teacher in Mali, with the help of her community and Catholic Relief Services, provided a safe haven for these refugees—in her front yard! t.co/3ubZgSYE3I?amp=1 To find out more about the many ways CRS works in our world, go to www.crs.org ~Barb Luxenberg

It suggests that these dimensions are not learned but innate in the individual. The word deacon has its origin

Good stewards strive to conform their lives to that of Christ—emptying themselves of all pride and putting themselves at the service of others.

Walk Every Step with Christ Holy Week is a week for being mindful. We must set loose the baggage of Lent, and not be deterred by the dazzling sunrise of Easter morning beckoning in the distance. It’s okay for us to be excited for Easter. We’ve waited so long, after all. In my opinion it’s one of the best feelings there is: the yearning we have in our hearts for the Resurrection as we embark on Palm Sunday. And in a purely logical sense, many of us have Easter celebrations for which we are preparing, and practical considerations to contend with. It’s going to be a busy week, one likely full of happy distractions. But my friends, we simply must keep our feet on the ground. Let’s not “skip” Holy Week. Resist the urge to flip to the last page of the book, to fast-forward to the final scene of the movie. Don’t rob yourself of the journey. This week is a blessed opportunity. It is this week that teaches us who we are. In the span of the Triduum, we have the birthday of the priesthood, the institution of the Eucharist, the sacrifice on Calvary and so many other vivid and meaningful scenes. It may sound strange, to advise someone to savor the moments of Holy Week. There are so many violent and heartrending moments, after all. But this is the valley of tears, remember — we are not in Heaven yet. And here, in our fallen, sin-filled world, it is the heartrending moments that seem to matter the most. These are the moments that define us as Catholics. Live them. Cherish them. Be present for each one. — Tracy Earl Welliver, MTS ©LPi
