POP Box today: We were popless today. A day without pop is like a day without mom. Keep an eye open for an induction in April – one of our guests has turned in his application! Welcome, Roger!

P R O G R A M

Roger Steimel (a Faivre on his mother’s side) enlightened us today about the Faivre farm family of DeKalb County. Roger is a former Key Clubber! (Of the Year, I think I heard!). DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association (DAAHA) started the ball rolling on a book on the history of the Faivre farm family. The story starts in eastern France. Two towns (Servance and Montavon), 100 miles apart were home to the Faivres and Montavons. But the families didn’t meet until they got to Ohio. Roger showed pictures of the area in France. By the 1830s, 1840s, a lot of people were getting tired of the unrest and France, and made their way here. Pierre Montavon did so in 1854. Two years later, Constant Faivre made the winter-time, 3 month journey to Portsmouth, Ohio. Just in time for the Civil War. Constant had no more stomach for war, and so moved to Amboy, IL in the 1860s. (The Steimels followed a similar route through Peru and LaSalle.) Louis Faivre carried on the family horse tradition. Roger’s grandparents, Joseph and Mary Ann Faivre, got married in 1908. Joseph ordered a diy house from Sears/Roebuck. (Pretty nice house!). The house still stands today, but it’s much more colorful (or maybe it’s just the picture that’s more colorful, since the first was in black and white). Roger’s parents came to DeKalb to be part of the Catholic community here. Roger had a lot of family pictures from the 1920s, 1930s, and later. Roger’s mother was one of nine Faivre children (including Carl Heinisch’s mother). This has translated into seven Faivre farms in our area (an 8th child, Rita Brown, and her husband Bob are land owners). Roger’s dad, Ferdie, was an early DeKalb seed corn salesman. J.P. Faivre was one of the leaders in agriculture industry. Three Faivre brothers married three Herman sisters. There are 75 Faivre grandchildren, including Roger and Carl. 451 Faivre descendants (Joseph and Mary Ann) are still with us.

Heard around the tables…Just some ideas about embezzling treasurers…

Quote for the dayThere are two spiritual dangers in not owning a farm. One is the danger of supposing that breakfast comes from the grocery, and the other that heat comes from the furnace.
