On Thursday, March 15th, the long-awaited Pi Day arrived for UNHS students. Pi Day is an annual celebration of the mathematical constant π (pi).

Pi Day is observed on March 14 since 3, 1, and 4 are the first three significant digits of π. After about a week of gathering donations from the students and teachers of UNHS by the National Honor Society, it was finally time for the teachers to get pied. History Club Places in History Day Competition by SALLY JIANG & UDEME UDOM

On March 11th, the UNHS History Club participated in the 28th Annual New York City National History Day Competition at the Museum of New York and Academy of Medicine. The History Club members: Jennifer Risa, Melinda Lin, Udeme Udom, and Sally Jiang worked weeks on their exhibit board depicting the New York City Draft Riots. Through intensive research, with the help of the history club coordinator, Mr. Kazaks along with outside knowledge from U.S history teacher Mr. Lotosky, the team was able to gather enough materials on the topic to create the board; the team showcased their hard work to the general public and judges at the competition on Sunday. The club and several other competitors across New York City were congratulated for their efforts in a speech by actor, Anthony Lee Medina, who currently plays John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the hit Broadway show, Hamilton.

The team watched a history documentary on New York, explored the Museum of New York, and spent the day immersed in historical events surrounding this

year’s theme, “Conflict and Compromise.” The students were interviewed by judges individually and were expected to answer questions concerning their project on the NYC Draft Riot, the process including research around the theme “conflict and compromise,” and the historical context behind the exhibit. The club had outstanding support from Mr. Kazaks and his wife and son, who cheered on the team. On March 15th, the team attended the award ceremony at Ronay Menschel Hall at the Museum of the City of New York. The team held their breath as Sharon Wilkins, Deputy Manhattan Borough Historian called winners for Senior Group

Exhibit. University Neighborhood High School was called on stage for 4th place, making UNHS eligible for the State Regionals. After just starting the club in November, it is impressive that they placed in History Day and are heading off to State Regionals, in April. We at History Club are proud and hope to have the support of the school, as we try to win State and eventually reach Nationals.

The History Club team will be going to the New York State History

Day on Monday, April 23, 2018, in Cooperstown, New York at The Farmers’ Museum. The 2018 National Contest will be held June 10-14, 2018 at the University of Maryland. College Park.

Students Across America March for Their LivesBy KEVIN BARRIGA AND ADNAN HASNAT

On February 14, 2018, one of the deadliest shooting

since Newtown, Connecti-cut transpired in Stoneman Douglas High School. The Parkland shooting was committed by 19 years old Nikolas Cruz. He used an AR-15 style gun, killing 17 people and injuring 15 oth-ers. He was later captured by a police officer and taken into custody.

After this incident, thousands of public school students in America walked out of class for 17 minutes on March 14 to show their support in ending gun violence. They walked out for 17 minutes to honor the 17 people who died on the day of the shooting. Even

Nickelode-on went off air for 17 minutes to show their support of ending gun violence.

Many University Neighbor-hood High School students also particapated in this event, creating a sense of respect and purpose for the ones who lost their lives. Harrison Yam, a senior from UNHS, stated that, “It’s a good way to let the world know that we need to stop this crisis and that people should take this seriously. There are still lots of shoot-ers out there and you don’t

know when it will happen to you.” Another student, Shaishab Lodh, voiced his opinion: saying, “Kids shouldn’t have to come to school knowing that they can die in an instant because of how weak the gun control regulations are. We must do something quick or else we will lose tons of lives and tons of our families will be

scarred for-ever.” After the walkout, we had the opportunity to speak with Ms. Collins on the issue. “The walk-out was very purpose-ful; some students

were ready for it and it had meaning for them in respecting the lives of those we have lost, and for some it was just freetime time, so I had mixed feelings about this event.”

In response to this tragic event, there was also a rally protesting gun violence on March 24 called the “March for Life” in Washington D.C.

HospiChallenge @ St. Joseph’s College By NIKOLAS AYALA

On March 19, Ms. Constantinou and select students from her Hospitality class attended this year’s HospiChallenge at St. Joseph’s College. This event

entailed several competitions that highlighted the skills in hospitality that the students have been learning about this year. UNHS took first place in the South Korea Olympics. Students were asked to create a way to use the Olympic structure to prevent it from becoming a wasteful infrastructure like most Olympic structures after they have been used. UNHS also took first place in the “Trasherpiece” challenge: creating a centerpiece with the garbage from lunch that day. UNHS also took home second place in the “Wild West Cruise” which entailed planning an event on a cruise ship based in 1865. UNHS also won third place in “Towel Creatures.”

The event was a hit with the students who attended.

MEET THE GLEE CLUBBy ANNJALIE CHANDER

After a successful performance in last year’s spring show, the glee club is back. With a new instructor, the club is focusing more on singing. Glee allows students to leave their comfort zon and use their voice. Students in the club are taught vocal warm-ups to help strengthen their voice. The glee club is also creating their own tone by taking

The Beatles “Let It Be” and Khalid’s “Location” and harmonizing them, making it their own. The club also hopes to be able to generate an original song created by the club, and perform it during this year’s spring show.

Glee takes place every Tuesday from 3:00 to 4:30 at the Abron Arts Center.

Meet The Chess Club By NIKOLAS AYALA

Want to test your convergent thinking skills? Join the chess

club! Originally known as Chaturanga during the 6th century in India, chess works to improve one’s verbal, mental and emotional skills.

The chess club is an activity that requires critical thinking and wise decision making skills. Chess club is open on Tuesdays, from 2:40 to 3:40 in room 309. If you are unaware of the rules, just walk in, and learn from other students.

Try to take on the champion, Mr. Buckner. He has faced defeat by only three students: David Wang, Niah Plenty, and Jordan Salom. In an interview, Mr. Buckner said:“My goal is for the students to beat me, and I hope that this club will help students understand how to use their head.” Chess will never get boring, only because it develops new ideas during every game. Mr. Buckner also states, “Once they start playing, they’ll never quit.” The club help students develop a better mindset and try different tactics to win. Mr. Buckners advises new chess players Sebastian Carmona and Amy

Lugo.

UNHS Parent Teacher Conferences HeldBy CHRISTINA ROESCH

UNHS’ Parent Teacher Conferences of the spring semester were conducted on March 8th and March 9th. Parents came to communicate any

problems students have been facing academically and recieved updates on students’ progress and grades. Parents were asked to participate in completing a school survey before meeting with teachers. This event also provided volunteer hours for National Honor Society members, organized by NHS leader, Mr. Moulder. The National Honor Society assisted in escorting parents from room to room. UNHS Student Government also had a bake sale with sweet treats such as: cookies, cupcakes, and brownies. It was a great turnout for both days of Parent Teacher Conferences.

HOROSCOPES ARIES (March 21-April 19): Handle your colleagues and peers with caution. Don’t feel like you have to share personal information if you don’t trust a situation or someone you are dealing with. Listen care-fully and move forward.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20): What you do for others will not go unnoticed. A kind word or offering something special to someone you like will improve your relationship. Love and romance are high-lighted and should be handled responsibly. Share your feelings and intentions.

GEMINI (May 21-June 20): You’ll get taken advantage of if you are too eager to please or if you take on tasks that don’t belong to you. Anger will eventually set in if you end up doing the brunt of the work. Emo-tional blackmail is apparent.

CANCER (June 21-July 22): Make a point to include someone you love in a business function. It will help you fit in better with those you work with and encourage your personal ally to take on new profession-al challenges. Romance is in the stars.

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Communications can go either way. Strive to remain calm, offer what you can and walk away from anyone who is being unreasonable. Be cautious while traveling or dealing with emotional matters that could affect your status and reputation.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): Partnerships should be your primary concern. Whether you are look-ing for love or are already in the midst of a relationship with someone, ironing out any issues that need adjust-ing will make your life better.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Whether you are looking for love or friendship, consider including some-one you are close to in your plans. Before you let your imagination run wild, however, consider the risks of pursuing something questionable. Secrets are best kept that way.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): Make time for the ones you love. Whether you make plans to spend time with children, friends or your romantic partner, live in the moment and share your feelings and future plans. A short trip will bring you closer together.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): Emotions will escalate if you get into discussions with friends, relatives or your immediate family. Don’t let tempers mount. Instead, let everyone calm down and rethink what’s at stake before you continue. Time is on your side.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): You can turn your dream into a reality. Your sensitivity toward those you deal with will make a difference in the outcome of a situation you are trying to manipulate. An open and honest approach will lead to personal success.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Channel your energy into activities that will stimulate you men-tally, physically and emotionally, and it will diminish a tendency someone has to derail your plans. A personal change will make you feel confident and content with your accomplishment.

PISCES ( Feb. 19-March 20): Stay calm, focused and refuse to let anyone goad you into an argu-ment. Have a plan in place and stick to what you know you can accomplish. Personal growth will come from the ability to know your limits and your strengths.
