BUS-391-01 ST: International Marketing 3.0 LEC M W F 11:00 - 11:50 am T. Clark

International Marketing examines the dynamic social, political, legal, and economic environments within which global organizations conduct international marketing operations. With emphasis on the ways in which international marketing differs from a purely domestic marketing strategy, students will consider cross-cultural consumer behavior, methods of international marketing research, forms of regional market agreements, world trade patterns, and multi-national practices for establishing appropriate international product, pricing, distribution, and promotional programs. This is a highly interactive course wherein students will engage with a variety of methods to explore international marketing topics.

DCOM-394-21 ST: Documentary Filmmaking 3.0 LYN 118 LEC T 6:30 - 9:30 pm S. Ulrich

Documentary filmmaking was once a specialized field undertaken by wealthy hobbyists, non-profits, and government agencies. The simplest form is the "documenting" of something for historical purposes. Documentaries can be educational and honest, elitist and condescending, manipulative propaganda, or all of the above. Mockumentaries are sometimes as revealing in their nature as the docs at which they poke fun. The documentary form may now be in a golden age and has embraced clever storytelling techniques that entertain viewers. Or it could be argued that is has been so democratized by the availability of good cameras and cheap editing software that over saturation has killed the industry. We will make docs, and study them.

Prerequisite: Junior or Senior standing. Behavioral economics is a branch of economics-- the social science concerned with developing theories whose ultimate aim is to help us better understand the world we live in. While economics studies how scarce resources are allocated given unlimited wants, behavioral economics focuses specifically on how scarce decision resources are used. Behavioral economics extends the theories of rational choice and equilibrium analysis by directly addressing real world challenges to the theory and assumptions of standard economic theory embodied in homo economicus. The class will focus on public policy issues and how behavioral economics can improve social decision making by examining the following topics: decision making under risk and uncertainty, mental accounting, social preferences, beliefs, heuristics and biases, inter-temporal choice, choice architecture, libertarian paternalism and experimental economics.

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. The great world keeps spinning, regardless of human feats and foibles that consume our attention and rock our personal and community foundations. And yet, it is the narratives of individuals and their communities -- the culture in which they are immersed and the connections they come to share with others -- that often provide us with context from which we gather greater meaning. Through intriguing narratives, we will explore individuals and their cultural connections from the heart of Haiti, to the displaced Hmong people in California, and subcultures in the Bronx. Our reading, research, and writing will touch upon such diverse subjects as faith beliefs, family constructs, poverty, illegal drugs, illness, and the quandaries presented by the inequities of the medical and criminal justice systems. Ultimately, we will explore the value of human connection as we dance along the wire of history.

Have you ever wondered why the people of Brazil and other South American countries typically greet their guests with a huge hug and have a huge smile on their face? Is it true that there is a different sense of time in Brazil? Who is Dilma anyway? Lebanon Valley College will host 16 students from Brazil for three weeks in January. During their time with us, we will explore the music, dance, language, food, history, and diverse religions prevalent in Brazil today through their eyes. After their departure, we will delve deeper into these issues. Students in the course will have the opportunity to research and explore topics in Brazil that best represent their personal interests and degree major.

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. Why are human beings often so ready to go to the most extreme and dangerous corners of our world? In this course we will explore new territory by engaging students in readings and writings about early and present-day western attempts to penetrate the forbidden land of Tibet, and conquer Mt. Everest-the highest point on our planet. We will travel the legendary "Silk Road" of Central Asia with the real-life archaeologists who inspired the Indiana Jones movies, in search of ancient lost cities, artwork, and manuscripts. Along the way, we'll study the collisions of different cultures and religions, the morality of removing art from one culture to another, and the power of climate change, warfare, and human migration to affect radical change on civilizations.

The term American Dream, coined in 1931, suggests an ability for us to reach complete success and happiness in our personal and professional lives. Much has changed in American society and culture since 1931 which might lead us to question if the American Dream is still possible. Through a selection of readings and films, this course continues to explore what we commonly now see as success and happiness in today's society and how those definitions compare to the definitions from eighty-five years ago. Students will challenge, revise, and defend the opportunities for individual success within the United States, focusing specifically on the impact gender and culture have on an individual's ability to succeed. We will interrogate the cultural and social currency of both the original tale as well as the adaptations by examining the formal and thematic innovations in these twice-told tales. We will concentrate on the frame tale, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and trace the evolution of Frankenstein's monster into the 20th and 21st centuries through hypertext, social media, TV shows, films, graphic novels, etc. We will examine the creation of the "other" through various critical lenses. We will read the hypertext fiction Patchwork Girl and excerpts from Alasdair Gray's Poor Things to interrogate the creation of the female monster. We will also look at how popular culture uses the "myth" of the monster in order to understand how certain narratives are shaped by and in turn influence cultural capital.

What if reality is not simply given, but shaped by our thinking and the thinking of those who have come before us? As a continuation of our investigations from the fall semester, this course will focus on contemporary philosophical problems that arise when we consider how our everyday experiences are shaped by thoughts and ideas. To this end, we will read, discuss and analyze contemporary philosophical writings that question the ways that we conceive of issues surrounding food, race, and truth in the media. From these readings and discussions we will develop our own arguments about the ways in which our reality is constructed, and then develop one of those arguments into a full length research paper.

FYE-112-12 Fictional History FYE 4.0 LEC T TH 8:00 - 9:20 am

LEC W 12:00 - 12:50 pm

D. Lebo

G. Grieve-Carlson

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. History is supposed to be non-fiction, and fiction is supposed to be non-factual, yet the first historian (Herodotus) was a great storyteller, and some of the stories he tells may not have been entirely historically accurate. On the other hand, fiction-writers have for hundreds of years been telling stories about men and women who actually existed, and about things that happened, as they say, "in history," and some of their fictions are remarkably historically accurate (a history professor once told my class that if we wanted an accurate depiction of ordinary life in eighteenth-century England, we should read Henry Fielding's novel Tom Jones). In this class we'll read and write about four short novels that deal with persons and/or events from history, and we'll consider what, if anything, fiction may have to tell us about the facts of the past.

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. Ever wished you could really explain a cool science experiment to your family or friends? Or maybe you've read news about a big scientific breakthrough, but weren't sure if the journalists got it right? There is often a disconnect between how science is presented by scientists, and how it is perceived by the public. In the fall semester we explored the different ways science is communicated and perceived. This spring we will move into two new areas: critically assessing different sources of scientific information, and how to write engaging and informative science pieces for different kinds of audiences. You will further develop writing, speaking and critical reasoning skills that will let you learn about scientific issues that are important to you, come to a well-supported opinion, and express your views. All majors are welcome, because science literacy is important for everyone!

In the process, we will study how issues such as religion, class, race, and gender emerged in presidential campaigns, and how various factors influenced the way people voted. We will pay particular attention to several "critical elections" such as 1800, 1828, 1860, 1896, 1932, and 1980 that seem to have ended one political era and pushed the political system in new directions.

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. From the Old English classic Beowulf to the recent film 28 Weeks Later art has expressed people's fascination with monsters and violent mayhem. Though the horror genre has always been popular, it is often also dismissed as lowbrow, even exploitative entertainment that caters to our baser instincts. In this seminar, we will confront that point of view by looking at the ways in which horror entertainment both reflects and challenges the cultures in which it is produced. We will analyze texts such as Stevenson's The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Harron's American Psycho. Students will learn about milestones in the development of the horror genre in film and literature, gain an understanding of introductory terminology in film and literary analysis, and discover the main theories about why audiences enjoy horror.

Prerequisite: FYE 111, or permission of the instructor. An extended research paper, presentations, and out-of-class film viewings are required components of this course.

The course explores the impact of the French Revolution and the industrial revolution over the course of the "long" nineteenth century (1789-1914). This course will examine the ideologies and changes that came out of these two revolutions: industrialism, conservatism, liberalism, Marxism, radicalism, nationalism, socialism, feminism, imperialism, democratization, and mass politics. That the French Revolution and industrialization were profoundly unsettling is suggested by the variety of political ideologies that they generated. By 1914, these tensions culminated in World War I. Understanding the history of this period is crucial because the nineteenth century established the political ideas and framework for the modern world. CTW. 3 credits.

Pre or co-requisite: The Connective Experience (COE) and, in particular, the integrative component of the COE must be taken prior to or concurrently with this course. Citizenship requires that we be informed, but how are we to be informed in an age in which we doubt everything? How to trust the "news" when the integrity of journalists is under attack and when we label news we do not like or disagree with as "fake"? In this course, we will look at a variety of current events across a wide range of disciplines so that we pull together many of the themes and issues in your general education program. As we look at specific current events, this course will encourage you to be informed and to think critically about journalism and the fundamental question of "how we know?" We will discuss the biases in the news media, how we think critically about news sources, how we weigh evidence, the nature of journalistic ethics, and the issue of fake news. In addition, students will also reflect on how their coursework, co-curricular experiences, and immersive experiences have helped to transform them during their time at LVC.

As you prepare to graduate, do you feel like you are entering the world of the upside down? In our increasingly tech-dominated and globalized world, students are often surprised to find that things aren't what they expect. For example, the most highly sought after graduates are those who can tell a good story, hold an interesting conversation with a stranger, and persuasively explain an idea. Too often graduates limit their own trajectories for growth and success with uncertainty about their own preparedness and how ready they are not to simply endure . but EXCEL. This course will explore the transition from 'student' to 'professional' in any discipline and provide students with the opportunity to craft meaningful strategies which leverage this new style of confident expression in the strange world they are entering. This seminar surveys important developments in twentieth and twenty-first century philosophy of science, beginning with logical empiricism. Topics include the nature and methods of modern science, the structure of scientific knowledge, scientific explanation and prediction, scientific progress, and the rationality of scientific change. Such topics are controversial and of deep philosophical interest. The seminar will also address philosophical issues related to science and society (demarcation of science from pseudoscience, values and science, and science and religion). No prerequisites are required for the seminar though familiarity with science and/or philosophy would be helpful.

Prerequisite: REL/PHL 450 in good standing, or permission of the instructor. This course will be a study of the history of interfaith movements in the United States focused on the work of Eboo Patel, Founder and President of Interfaith Youth Core (IFYC), culminating in REL 451 in which students will develop an interfaith project and accompanying academic paper about the results of the project. The course will introduce students the concept of religious literacy, the development of religious pluralism in the United States, the development of the notion of interfaith leadership, the rise of interfaith studies as an academic discipline, and the rise of various interfaith movements in the United States and globally. The spring semester course is aimed at preparing students to engage in a project aimed at active engagement with both interfaith literacy or leadership and an academic reflection on that project in the context of developing movements around interfaith cooperation. This course is cross-listed with REL-451-01.
