We have a great start to the month by celebrating Dr. Seuss’ Birthday this week. We are inviting our students to dress up like their favorite book character on Monday, March 2 nd to celebrate reading. The Cat in the Hat and other fun Dr. Seuss characters might come to visit to celebrate reading with us. To make this day even more special we plan to send every student home with their very own book! Our final SEP and Student Led Conference for the school year is coming up on March 19th. This is a great time for parents to meet with teachers to hear about the great things their children are doing and make some new goals to finish out the school year. Watch for a ParentLink message letting you know it is time to sign up for an SEP time on a Sign Up Genius coming soon. A genuine thank you for all the wonderful support you give to Barnett Elementary. One of my favorite days of the school year happened last week at our Leadership Day. This year we welcomed parents and community leaders into our school all together. The students loved teaching about the habits and sharing their leadership talents through the artwork around our school and during the program. We appreciate everyone that contributes in any way to make Barnett a great place. As always, thank you for allowing us to work with your children every day. We are looking forward to a great month! March Math Madness Math Madness is coming! During the month of March, we are holding a math facts competition between the 3rd and 4th graders, and another bracket between the 5th and 6th graders. It will run like the March Madness basketball tournament. Have your kids practice their math facts so they will be prepared for the first round during the first week of March. Here's a tip...accuracy beats speed! Scores in a tie will be broken by whoever was fastest. The championship round will be held during March's Bulldog Pride assembly.

Our 4th graders reviewed Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood with the school at our Bulldog Pride Assembly last week. Here are some ideas of ways to review this habit in your home including an awesome video our 4th grade Habit Specialists made for you to watch at home as a family! Summary: I listen to other people's ideas and feelings. I listen to others without interrupting. I look people in the eyes when talking. I am confident in voicing my ideas. Ideas of ways students can live this habit at home:

• Have family dinner together and while there, practice asking and listening how everyone's day went. Make sure everyone has a turn to talk about their day with the family.

• Hold a family council to decide on an activity your family could do together for spring break. Listen to everyone's ideas. Next discuss why or why not some things might be possible. After everyone has had a chance to discuss, decide together on what activity you can do as a family.

• The next time you have an argument with one of your siblings, practice slowing down and listening to their side and how they feel. Try to see their point of view. After listening, calmly express and talk about your point of view as well.

Many times we get so caught up in making sure everyone around us knows and understands how we see things that we don't take a moment to really listen to others and seek to understand their point of view. Here is a video written and produced by our 4th grade Habit Specialists that shows why it is helpful to seek to understand then to be understood.

Scan the QR code to watch the video made by our 4th grade Habit Specialist to

see how they handle the situation and find a win-win for everyone! Family Dinner Dialogue:

• Why is it important to be humble? • How did you help someone out today? • What is a leadership role you might take on at home to help your family? Share your ideas.

Family Challenges: • Identify and record two or three talents or strengths for each member of your family. • Pick a date this month to synergize as a family with a “family meeting.” Identify what is going

well for your family and what you could change. • With your family, choose a problem you may be having (dividing family responsibilities,

keeping track of homework completion, following curfew, etc) and use the Synergy Action Plan to summarize your child’s solution and your solution: 1. Define the problem. 2 Share your views. 3. Think of solutions. 4. Choose the best solution together.

• Work together to complete a community service project.
