OnGiving

When Enough is Enough By Rev. David Loleng

“AndmyGodwillmeetallyourneedsaccordingtotherichesofhisgloryinChristJesus.”Philippians4:19

“….andbecontentwithwhatyouhave…”Hebrews13:5

Our culture has convinced us that abundant life is about geWng more – more of anything that can be beYer, newer, faster, and in our hands sooner. The anxious urge to “consume now and pay later” is fed by a sense of scarcity. Adver_sing preys on these fears; the average person in the USA is bombarded by over 4,000 adver_sements each day. Ads oaen work by implying our lives are inadequate and unfulfilled, illustra_ng that we somehow need every excess we want. This ubiquitous consumerism is diametrically opposed to the abundant life Jesus reveals (John 10:10). Forces of our culture’s consumerism have even weaseled their way into our stewardship language and ideas. In a theology of scarcity, we believe there will not be enough for everyone, and doubt that God will provide for us. The scarcity mentality can plunge us into toxic suspicion and biYer compe__on. To heal from this scarcity mentality, many people focus on shiaing to an abundance men-tality. But current forms of this model do not resonate with everyone. There is true scarcity in contemporary society – a scarcity of resources, opportuni_es, and security – a reality that hits hardest for people in historically exploited com-muni_es of color, ci_es in decline, and emerging adults facing a changed economy. Recognizing that God provides for us out of God’s abundance does not dissolve our struggles. We must also be wary of how abundance mentality can lead to a nuanced form of prosperity gospel, which misleadingly aYributes material scarcity to a lack of faith. As I have talked with a wide range of church leaders about stewardship and generosity, suffi-ciency has surfaced as a concept dis_nct from both

scarcity and abundance. Lynn Twist, author of The Soul of Money, explains that: “Sufficiency …is not the same as abundance (abundance is more than we need – it is excess). Sufficiency is precise. It means that things are sufficient, exactly enough.” Shiaing from mindsets of scarcity or out-of-touch abundance, we should explore a mindset and theology of sufficiency. This approach can move us from fear and denial to crea_ve possibili_es in rela_on to our resources. We find a biblical example of God’s sufficiency in Exodus. God provided daily for the people wander-ing in the desert, sending manna to eat. The catch was that the manna would spoil aaer a day, so they could not store it and thus relied on God every day. In Exodus 16:16-18, God instructs the people to measure the manna with a device called an Omer (with a volume of about two quarts) for each per-son, so that there would be enough for each person. “…When they measured it with an Omer, those who gathered much had nothing over, and those who gathered liYle had no shortage; they gathered as much as each of them needed (16:18).” What if we applied this sufficiency mentality to our lives? What if we strived for enough rather than the excess of capturing abundance? And what if the abundance that we might be blessed with could be used for the common good? Having a sufficiency mindset can lead us to live more simply, to experience more contentment, to live with greater gra_tude and generosity, to re-calibrate our lives to what God desires, and to use our resources for God’s purposes, and by extension, the common good. As Lynne Twist goes on to write: “There is a principle of sufficiency, and it is as follows: When you let go of trying to get more of what you don’t really need, which is what we are all trying to get more of, it frees up immense energy to make a difference with what you have…to be known for what we allocate rather than what we accumu-late.” Maybe such an approach to alloca_on, to stew-ardship of the resources available, is what Jesus meant when helping us transform our ideas of abun-dant life.

Remember our TEAF mission! CLC has a TEAF fund (temporary emer-gency assistance fund). We have chosen the last Sunday of each month to collect donations to this fund, but, of course, donations at any time are welcome. Please re-member this mission in your giving! TEAF

Mission emphasis for March is the McLeod Emergency Food Shelf The mission emphasis for March is the McLeod Emergen-cy Food Shelf. This year the McLeod County Food Shelf is celebra_ng 36 years of service in McLeod County. The Minnesota FoodShare March Campaign brings together various Minnesota organiza_ons, businesses, and places of worship to help keep 300 food shelves statewide stocked throughout the year.

This March drive is very important to our local food shelf since monies and poundage of food collected reflex the matching fund from Minnesota Food-Share, corporate, founda_on business and individual dollars secured into the Food Fund. The amount of dollars distributed to our local food shelf from the Food Fund directly correlates to total collected right here in McLeod County. You can bring your non-perishable food items to church and drop them off in the grocery cart in the narthex. Cash dona_ons are especially helpful since the buying power of McLeod Emergency Food shelf is much greater and your cash goes much further. Suggested items requested by the food shelf are canned fruit juices, hot and dry cereal, dry , pow-dered or canned milk, hearty soups or stew, canned beef, tuna or chicken, peanut buYer, canned fruits or vegetables, canned or boxed main dished, pasta, rice and pasta sauce, baked beans, canned chili, potato buds, crackers, sugar, flour, coffee, tea, hot cocoa, pancake or biscuit mix and baking supplies. Special treats like cake, packaged cookies, muffin mix, granola bars, pudding or Jell-O mix are also appreciated. Personal care items for babies, children and adults are also welcome since the Food Shelf can only buy food items. Checks can be made out to Christ Lutheran and write on memo line “for the food shelf.” Thank you for your support.

Dear Faith Partners at Christ Lutheran Church, February 2019

We are excited to be organizing and hearing of efforts all around the county for the 2019 MN

FoodShare March Campaign and wanted to give you a little more as to why this campaign in so

important to McLeod Emergency Food Shelf (MEFS).

The MN FoodShare March campaign is our first opportunity each year to rebuild our food inventory

and cash balance after traditionally busy holiday seasons. A large portion of our support comes during

this 6-week campaign as food and funds collected are “multiplied” with additional grant funds through

the FoodFund.

For many years, there has been a very friendly #townchallenge as we encourage one another to

#givewhereyoulive. We take great care in calculating pounds per capita at the close of the campaign,

giving the town who generates the most in donations, bragging rights for the entire year. 😊 The goal

for 2019 is a combined dollar and pound total of 120,000! There’s some work to do but we’re

energized by the new ideas and contacts established as the campaign gets underway! (By the

way…2018 brought in a combination totaling 117,152.)

Many have been curious and asked what’s better to give – cash or food – and honestly, we simply

need BOTH! Cash donations allows us to pay our bills such as rent, insurance, wages, and make food

purchases to keep a relatively steady inventory and food donations give variety in client choice. We

found a list called FOOD DRIVE 5 as a quick, easy to remember list for when you’re wanting to purchase

but not sure what to get:

Protein – nut, nut butters, canned meats, canned and dry beans, lentils

Fruit – canned, dried and 100% fruit juice

Soups/Stews – Ready to eat, condensed and dry mixes

Whole Grain – Cereal, pasta, rice, crackers

Veggies – Colorful, low sodium, canned

When considering financial support, we accept cash or checks either in person or through the mail,

and there is also an online option via PayPal at www.mcleodemergencyfoodshelf.org under the

Donate tab.

All donations remain in McLeod County and go directly towards serving our friends who face food

insecurity and the many challenges of life which complicate the ability to provide quality, nutritious

food for their households. The kindness and generosity of 2018 allowed 17,471 (duplicated) individuals

nearly 510,000 pounds of food. Nearly 1600 McLeod County households were documented during the

8353 visits at MEFS.

Your congregational support has been tremendous and we value every single part of it! Thank-you! In Service,

Lennie Albers

Executive Director, McLeod Emergency Food Shelf
