Periodically in our life with God we undergo seasons of being under construction. (We would be wise to admit that this is always taking place, but some seasons more acutely than others). This is especially important for churches. It means that we are thinking beyond ourselves, seeking to do our part to ensure the message of God’s saving grace and Kingdom dream continues to the next generation (…and the generation after that).
In the Old Testament books of Exodus and 2 Chronicles God lays out, in painstaking detail, instructions for construction and maintenance of the Wilderness Tabernacle and Jerusalem Temple. Places matter. Even though they are not necessary for the Spirit to work, God still moves in people’s lives through places.
The leadership at Wabash Presbyterian has known for some time that we would soon need to address some issues with our campus. Over the last two years here are a few of the steps we’ve taken to prepare for future construction projects:
2015 – Architectural Survey of all buildings, with prioritized list of most pressing needs.
2016 – Team led by Cathy Wright takes part in a year- long program called Partners for Sacred Places, for the purpose of preparing to fundraise for our project.
2017 – Buildings and Grounds Committee identified the heating system repair as a matter of highest priority. Team consults with our boiler service provider Goudy Brothers on the project and
secures a construction timeline.

May 2018 – Re-piping of the Sanctuary Building’s boiler system begins.
Being good stewards of God’s resources means maximizing our efforts and minimizing unnecessary spending. The boiler in the Sanctuary building is still relatively new and in excellent working condition. However, the horizontal piping that provides heat to the building is not. Beginning sometime in the middle of May we will take up the floor from Fellowship Hall to replace the horizontal piping running below the church building.
We want to give everyone plenty of lead time before breaking ground in May, as it will mean considerable expense and moderate inconvenience. We anticipate the project will last between 6-8 weeks. However, access to the elevator, as well as the Miami Street door will remain available, with the exception of the first and possibly second Sunday in June.
In the coming weeks we will hold a congregational meeting to address the project and answer any questions you might have—including plans for financing the project.
We believe that places matter, but no place matters to God more than our hearts--for that is the temple where the Holy Spirit resides (1 Corinthians 3:16). We invite you during this season of construction to let this building project be analogous to the construction God is doing in your heart each and every day.
In this new season of ministry to the community of Wabash, God will use this space we’ve worked hard to preserve and maintain. But more importantly God will use the cultivated and generous hearts of the people who gather to worship and share life there. For His glory.

This month’s tidbit is “Recognition,” –
recognizing the unsung heroes in our
community; the widows and widowers.
James 1:27 articulates that a “pure and
faultless religion is to look after orphans
and widows in their distress.” These unsung
heroes are many times overlooked in our
society today. Where they were once
influential and secure individuals, they now
face life alone; having to manage finances,
home safety, car maintenance, and other
everyday decisions without their partners.
There are hard days when things don’t go
as planned such as burning dinner or the
toilet starts leaking without anyone to help
shoulder those burdens. 1 Timothy 5:3 says,
“Give proper recognition to those widows
who are really in need.” I encourage you to
take a moment to recognize an unsung
hero in your life and reach out to them.
Take them a meal, lend a hand. Let them
know they are not alone.

Learning about Laos
We’ll spend some time before class
and at the end of class learning
more about Laos and its culture. We
have a bulletin board outside the
Godly Play classroom to display a
map, the Laos flag, and pictures of
the Thammavongsa family. We also have a couple
of bilingual children’s books so they can see the
language.
Learn More & Join us
You can learn more about the Thammavongsa
family, view their newsletter and prayer calendar,
and more at visiblethoughts.weebly.com. When
prompted, the password is “iamafriend”.
Put their picture on your fridge to remember
to pray for them and support our
educational sponsorships.
Plan to be here the weekend of June 9th-
10th to meet them in person.
Read their newsletter to learn more about
what they do and about their family and
work.
Donate to help them cover the cost of their
van rental (about $3,000) by writing your
check to WPC with “T Family” written on the
memo line. Every little bit helps!
It’s an exciting year for Children’s & Family
Ministries as we begin a partnership with the
Thammavongsa family. The Thammavongsa family
has been serving as missionaries in Laos since 2013
or so. Sam and Jen have 7 children and 1
grandchild, and so they are a great example for our
kids to learn more about service and things
happening across the world. What will our
partnership look like?
Educational Sponsorships This year, we will sponsor two
children’s education in Laos.
Children are required to attend
school up to 3rd grade. Sadly,
many families cannot afford to
send their children to school,
even for these few short years,
let alone on to higher schooling.
This lack of education feeds the cycle of poverty,
abuse, addictions, human trafficking, and a low
sense of worth. Kids are encouraged to bring
change each week to put in our piggy bank. Any
additional money raised will go to support other
projects through the Thammavongsa family.
Pen Pals
Students will have a chance to
write letters to kids in Laos and
to the Thammavongsa children,
and receive letters back. The
Thammavongsa family will serve
as interpreters with the local
children.
CHILDREN’S & FAMILY MINISTRIES UPDATE
Kari Bartkus Director of Children’s & Family Ministries Email: [email protected]
During the month of June, we will be having our heating piping replaced. This will require the floor in Fellowship Hall to be lifted. Work will begin mid-May and will last roughly 6-8 weeks.
