EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH
Gustavo M. Congratulations to the
March Employee of the Month,
Gustavo M.! Gustavo is the sous
chef at the Avant, and he has been
working at the Avant for over 1
year. Prior to the Avant, Gustavo
had worked 6 years in the PAC
kitchen. “I was so happy to win this
award, because it is a goal of mine
to do a great job and make residents
happy,” he says. When not
working, Gustavo enjoys to keep
very active--exercising and bicycling
-- reading, and listening to music.
Gustavo has been working for many
years at different assisted living
communities, and he loves cooking
for seniors the most. “I really love
my job, because I have met a lot
of good people. The management,
my coworkers, the residents
and families...they are all so
wonderful,” he gushes. Jonathan
Shaw, his supervisor, adds,
“Gustavo has a positive attitude
and always wants to learn and do
the best he can in his job. He’s a
great role model.”

CONGRATULATIONS to the residents who participated in the
12th Annual Valentine’s Day Poetry Contest!
GRAND CHAMPION– Walter L.
The Good Old Days Some of the gals were snipping <1> away at the Commons of Palo Alto
On the 2nd month and the 14th day, cutting’ out red paper curvilinear hears,
And tryin’ for rhymes to honor the day- Saint Valentine’s- with many reminders
of days long ago-
Perhaps betterdays
When dreams were fresher
And we feasted on ambrosia and nectar.
Stirring the dusts of memory they recalled gifts: books, candy, and flars-
And dancing’ - smooth waltz to “Stairway to the Stars”.
And cozy, timeworn conventional phrases: “moon/June”, “arms/charms”,
beauty/cutie”, “thine/mine”, “forever and ever”.
Those were the days, my friends, we thought they’d never end.
Well...they haven’t.
<1> that’s “snipping”, not “sipping”
SECOND PLACE – Frank B.
Valentine
I have a sweetheart named Mia
My granddaughter makes me happy when I see her
She makes me smile, as she grows and grows
Studies hard and likes to sew(s)
No prissy missy in this generation
A sports player enjoying the elation.
Only nine, but she already gives the sign
When she grows up, it will be her time!

There’s no one like you.

THIRD PLACE – Patricia J.
“Sentimental?
Just a touch
Because I like you
Very much.”
Those are the words on a
Valentine’s Day card from
The man who would become
My husband for sixty four years
I was not impressed by the card,
And read it aloud to my family at
dinner that night.
I wasn’t at all sentimental but, four
years later
We were married.
Signed with my nick name, Mitzi G.
Ode to Fred- My Valentine
Of all the guys I ever knew
For me, there was only one—t’was you
With your bright blue eyes and
a heart so true
You were my sweetheart,
through and through
You were blessed with quite a wit
Quick and sharp, and naughty- a bit
Your poetry was so profound
And you were Mr. Fix-It, all ‘round
Our kids and grandkids remind
me of you
How fortunate for me that they do
I’ll raise some wine and drink to this—
And seal it with a loving kiss.

LITERARY LECTURE w/Darwin Patnode
Anna Karenina by Leo Tolstoy One of the world's greatest novels, Tolstoy's
Anna Karenina tells about the adulterous wife of a social-climbing fellow who refuses to give her a divorce in 19th-century Russia and, by contrast, about the honest but bumbling Levin, who seeks to do the right thing in his own way in managing his farm in times of social change. We will show
the film, Anna Karenina (2012), in the evening.
