Clear your calendar now ladies and gentlemen for the big-gest celebration in Southern Illinois, no it isn’t the eclipse, alt-hough it does have something to do with the Son and some darkness, but the Son does prevail! I am talking about the SID LWML biennial convention on September 28-29, 2018 at Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School. We will be celebrating 75 years of LWML under the theme “His Love Endures Forev-er”!

On Friday evening, you can get checked into your hotel room at Centralia’s brand new Best Western Inn Plus, then drive on over to the high school for the Friday evening activi-ties with the Young Women’s Representatives. Maybe your so-ciety will be setting up some things to “sell” at the Mite Market (look for details elsewhere in this issue of the Newsletter), or perhaps you have some memorabilia to display about your church’s LWML history. But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with

gentleness and respect ... 1 Peter 3:15 Celebrations are the marking of milestones in our lives. We observe holidays, anniversaries, birth-days and special occasions such as baptisms, confirmations and graduations. Our Southern Illinois Dis-trict LWML is also celebrating 75 years of service this year. As you are aware, the district convention is coming up in September. Our theme for the convention is “His Steadfast Love Endures Forever”. Our national LWML representative will be Jennifer Hueck-er, VP of Christian Life. Convention banners from many decades, used at both district and national conventions representing Southern Illinois District LWML, will be displayed around the hall. “Decades of Missions” will take you on a walk down memory Lane as past district presidents recall events from their term in office. I am excited about our line-up so far and I hope you are too. Make plans to attend on September 28-29, 2018 at Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School in Centralia. We encourage you to come and see what’s happening at convention. Please come as delegates to help decide the direction of the SID LWML. As societies, please send your Young Women Represent-atives to help us grow as an organization. Please send the names of potential district officers to your zone representatives on the nominating committee or to Michele Hill, Nominating Committee Chair-man. The offices to be filled at this convention are President, Vice President of Organizational Re-sources, Vice President of Special Focus Ministries, Corresponding Secretary and Financial Secretary. Please bring your ideas for programs you would like to have in the district. There is a lot of talent in this district. We need your continued support with your mites, your service and your prayers as we move toward convention. We observed Ash Wednesday on February 14 and the ensuing Lenten season and Easter on April 1. Have a blessed Easter season.

night’s sleep.

On Saturday, you can eat breakfast at the hotel or come have a bite with us at CORLHS. Ladies will have delicious breakfast breads and muffins etc. to enjoy while you visit the displays and get ready for the convention to begin. There will be Divine Service with Holy Communion as we raise our voices to praise our Mighty God! During the day we will be voting on new officers to lead us and new grants to support. We will also welcome back past mission grant recipients to tell us what became of the LWML mites given to them. We will celebrate the decades of Missions throughout the years past and the years to come with song and displays. Our National LWML Representative comes to us from the Missouri District and is a farm gal herself, so Jennifer Huecker will feel right at home at COR surrounded by fields and crops. I look forward to the message she has to bring to our district. So get ready for a fun weekend with your LWML sisters and come on over to Centralia, Illinois for the 39th biennial convention of the SID LWML!

CONVENTION

Page 3: March 2018 LWML LWML celebrating 75 yearsNewsletter+March+2018+(2).pdfRev. Terry Grebing also, there is no such thing as “just another dol-lar.” Every penny, nickel, dime, and

This past year of 2017 was a banner year for Lutheran Women in Mission! As Lutherans world-wide celebrated the 500th Anni-versary of the Reformation, a se-

ries of celebrations commemorated the 75th Anni-versary of the LWML. In keeping with this mile-stone, our own District is planning a 75th Anni-versary celebration for our 2018 Convention in September at Christ Our Rock Lutheran High School in Centralia.

Beyond that upcoming celebration in 2018, compared with the year 2017, this is just another year among Lutherans; nothing special. What’s more, as I write this newsletter article, today is nothing special in general. It is just another day.

Or so it seems. According to God’s Word, there is no such thing as “just another year,” or “just another day.” Lamentations 3:22-23 declares, “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is Your faithfulness.” The beloved hymn based on those verses declares in every chorus: “Great is Thy faithfulness! Great is Thy faithfulness! Morning by morning new mercies I see; All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me.”

This reminder is timely indeed, day in and day out. After all, our routine response to our daily routine is often a “ho hum attitude” about our “humdrum existence”. We often find ourselves just going through the motions without emotion—without whistling or even humming a happy tune.

But the Psalmist offers a joy-filled alternative as he gushes in Psalm 118:24, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” The Lord gives us every reason to rejoice every day as we are urged in Hebrews 12:2, “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before Him en-dured the cross, scorning its shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”

“Another day, another dollar” is an old, famil-iar saying in our workaday world. However, even as there is no such thing as “just another day,” so

Counselor’s Corner Rev. Terry Grebing

also, there is no such thing as “just another dol-lar.” Every penny, nickel, dime, and quarter is a precious gift from the Lord to be used in loving service to Him. While we often take our pocket change for granted as insignificant, for the past 75 years and counting, the Lord has been working “mite-ily” through the LWML to build His king-dom all around the world!

As we go about our daily routines during the remainder of 2018, the year and the day itself may be nothing special. But at the same time, sharing the love of Jesus Christ with fellow sin-ners in need of a Savior on daily basis remains vital!

Thus, while I may advise an excellent server at a restaurant, “Keep the change,” here’s my advice to you: “Don’t keep the change! Keep filling those Mite Boxes with pennies, nickels, dimes, and quar-ters—and urge others to do likewise.” My dear sisters in Christ, by placing perhaps millions of coins in the hands of

our Supreme Servant, He will accomplish great things through us. In the process, 2018 will not be “just another year” in the lives of millions of people touched by the Gospel through Mite Box projects. It will be a banner year under the um-brella of God’s grace and mercy!

Give thanks to the Lord Almighty, for the Lord is good; his love endures forever.” Jeremiah 33:11b

Giving thanks is something we should do every day of our lives. Look around you. Do you have ade-quate food, clothing, and shelter? How about a vehi-cle to get you to school or a job? A neighbor who waves when you drive by? A grandmother who al-ways remembers your birthday? A pastor who genu-inely asks how you are and listens intently to your answer? Sometimes the little things in life just pass us by and we take them for granted. We are quick to

pray for something that we think we desper-ately need or for a burden to be lifted, but do we take the time to say “Thank you” for the good things the Lord provides daily in our lives? At the top of that list is our Savior, Je-sus Christ. Without Him, we would lead a dark and dismal life. God’s love for us is nev-er ending. No matter what we do or how many times we do it, the repentant sinner is always welcomed back into the loving arms of our Father. We have much to be thankful for in re-gards to our district mission grants. Of our 14

Having gifts that differ according to the grace given to us, let us use them: Romans 12:6a

Gifts of God

What gifts or talents has God given you? What do you really like to do? What are you good at? I know that what I really like to do and what I am good at is not exactly the same it is similarly.

The board meeting in January it became appar-ent that we each have a special talent. One of the ladies said, “I was just playing with some num-bers.” We all laughed and said, “ We are blessed to have you.” The discussion went something like You like to write and you are good at it. it. What a blessing God has given the LWML. Thank God that we are each unique and we all work together for the common good.

Now what I really want all of us to think about. How do we get younger woman involved with LWML? What gifts do they have that God could use for LWML? How do we get them ready to serve. What can we provide to them? What kind of activities would attract them? What interest do they have?

I don’t have the answers but I would like for all of us to think about it. I know that I have been thinking about how to invite the ladies of our church to the LWML meetings at church and at the zone, district, and national level. God has given us gifts for the good so let us use them. May God bless you now and always.

Our current goal of $56,000 has not been met but we are on target to meet this if mite collections continue at their cur-rent rate. Remember our biennium ends June 30, 2018. Keep those mites coming in! We pray for joyful hearts, giving spirits and the Lord’s bless-ing to bring this goal to fruition.

What does a Lutheran woman look like? This weekend we at-tended an all Lutheran Basketball tournament where lots of young

boys played basketball all day. Looked around the crowd and wondered to myself… we all look and act differently, “How can you tell what a Lutheran woman looks like?” This week Rev. Joy Holden began our district board meeting with devotions and passed a sheet asking each of us to identity with a photo. Fun, but revealing, again how dif-ferent we are, each with a unique God-given gift. Scripture says; “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you, that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give it to you.” John 15:16 So, how you put your toilet paper roll on its holder, how you wear your hair, how you put cat-sup on French fries, or how often you clear your emails, has nothing to do with the fact! “You are chosen!” The nominating committee is filling po-

sitions on the ballot for the upcoming election at the district convention in September. Each posi-tion requires a different talent, and we do not know what you look like! Would you please, stand up!

Heading south in 2019 The National LWML Convention will be held June 20-23 at the Arthur R. With prayer all things are possible By Jane Lucht, Editor

On October 2, 2017, my life changed in a hurry. I was scheduled for a routine colonoscopy, and when it was over I received the news that I had cancer of the colon. What a shock. No symptoms. I was scheduled for surgery on October 6 and was ready for the operating room when the surgeon said he wanted o check the results done earlier once more, He returned and said. “The good news is that you will not have surgery. You have Lymphoma.” That was new to me also, but arrangements were made to see the oncologist to determine further treatment. As soon as the family received the news, it was posted on Facebook. Within minutes, there were hundreds replying that they were praying for me. It was humbling but so appreciated. You might have even been one of them. God answered the prayers. After the second chemo treatment, the doctor said “They (lymph nodes) are gone.” What a great Christmas present! I continued having my six treatments that ended Feb-ruary 13. It didn't end there. I broke my right wrist on December 22. The pins and cast were removed February 9. Now it is time to recover and get back to doing things. Just want to thank everyone for their prayers, cards, gifts, emails and concerns.

Love and Mercy in the Good-Bye Have you ever looked at a situ-ation and said, “God sure put that person in the right place at the

right time!”? Sometimes, we don’t always think that we are where we should be, only because we don’t feel like God could use us to do His will the way He knows we can. When I awoke on the first Thursday of the New Year, I prayed that God would use me to show His love and mercy to someone that day. Little did I know, that ‘someone’ would be my brother Jerry.

Jerry had kidney cancer for about 3 years, but

had really been battling it for the past 2 years. In early September, Hospice care was set up at his home. He asked if I would come stay on Thursday after-noons for two hours. I am so glad that God gave me that opportunity to sit with Jerry. We talked about life and the good ole days. Silly things that had happened before I was born and after. See, he was number six in a family of nine siblings, seven boys and two girls. I am the “baby.” I would bring things for him to do with his hands as he could only sit in a wheelchair and not walk anymore. So peeling apples for sauce or crisp, cutting up veggies for soup, or cracking pe-cans helped us both to keep our minds off the evi-table day that would come.

As the weeks went along, we both knew the

end was near and I spoke more about the peace he would have with the Lord. On Christmas Eve morning the snow was falling and looked so beau-tiful in the woods around his home, he was con-fused from the pain medication, but we still visited childhood memories, of fun times in the snow years ago. I asked about his baptism and we talked about heaven and the joy and peace that he would have there. As I left that morning I said, “The Lord be with you, Jerry.” He replied, “He always has been.” What a declaration of God’s love and mer-cy from a dying man. I visited one more day be-fore that evitable day came. Jerry had made it through Christmas and his wedding anniversary of

24 years. Praise the Lord God had been with him. Now, Thursday, January 4 arrived. I got there

around 2 p.m. his breathing was already labored, I had seen it before, it won’t be long, I’d thought. I prayed for him. I sang to him. Another brother had dropped by to say “hello” and “‘til we meet again.” I stood beside Jerry holding his hand and sang songs of comfort to him. As I watched him, I realized what it must have been like for Jesus as he struggled to get his last bit of air. Oh, how helpless Mary must have felt at the foot of the cross. How, dear God, did she go through that? I said out loud. I know that God gave her the strength. Shortly after, Jerry’s breathing was very

slow. I prayed the Lord’s Prayer and re-cited Psalm 23 and told Jerry if he could hold on 5 or 10 more minutes his wife would be home, but, if he couldn’t wait and Jesus was holding out His hand, then he should take His hand and go, we would be OK.” Jesus carried him away from this painful world to rest in His arms forever, just a few minutes later. God blessed me with the opportunity to give comfort to my brother is his final

hours, because God was there with me. God was with us, always has been and always will be! He gives us opportunities to share his love and mercy to others every day. Thank you for those mo-ments, Jesus. Thank you for all you have done for us. Thank you to my sisters in Christ for your prayers and words of comfort. I love you all.

Some of us have been

“enjoying” some snow to start off

our New Year, but by the time

the NEWSLETTER is sent out, I hope we are all

enjoying some more spring like weather. When I

was younger, I always wished for snow on my Feb-

ruary birthday—now that I’ve gotten to the “senior

citizen” age, I wish for no snow on my birthday.

Funny how our thoughts change as we get older,

but back to the snow.

Being inside looking outside at the

snow is beautiful. I really enjoy watching

the snow fall as it silently covers every-

the beauty of each flake as it falls before it

joins the snow on the ground and becomes, part of

the big snow picture. God is an amazing Creator

THE LWML GIFTS OF LOVE LEGACY CIRCLE

PURPOSE: To give glory to God in honor of those who have remembered His work through LWML via a gift/estate plan. Women of the church have a long history of supporting worthy causes and Gospel outreach efforts. As far back as the mid-1800s, church women recognized emerging needs by gathering and mending clothes for seminary students, assisting in hospitals and orphanages and providing food for the hungry, among many other deeds of mercy. The Mite Box collections began in 1928, and by 1930, 92 Ladies Aid Societies had collected $6,651.31, mostly from leftover change. In 1942 the LCMS formally recognized the LWML as its official women’s or-ganization. Over the decades, LWML has distributed more than $100 million in mission grants to thousands of worthy efforts and causes to help spread the Gospel message and address human care needs both domesti-cally and around the world - all through mite offerings! By, 2006, LWML leadership under past-President Virginia Von Seggern started thinking that even more mission grants could be funded if LWML had its own planned giving ministry. Its purpose would be to en-courage faithful stewards to return a portion of their estates to God in thanksgiving for His lifetime provi-sions of material blessings. The Gifts of Love planned giving ministry was launched in 2007 under the lead-ership of then-President Linda Reiser. Pat Bilow, Gift Planning Counselor with LCMS Foundation, was se-lected to lay the groundwork. Five years later, $25 million in immediate and deferred gifts had been documented from 100+ donors who made planned gifts for LWML and other ministries of the Church. Since then, volunteer Gift Planning Ad-vocates have been added to the ministry to help spread the gift planning word in their home districts. Linda Gage, also a Gift Planning Counselor with the LCMS Foundation, is taking the ministry to even greater lev-els when in 2013 she replaced Pat who moved to part-time work. By year end 2016, the total to LWML and other church ministries stood at over $85 million. By the grace of God, this ministry has flourished through your generosity and heart for ongoing mission out-reach. If you have remembered LWML in your gift/estate plan, we give thanks to God for you and invite you to make us aware of your gift so that we can welcome you into the LWML GIFTS OF LOVE LEGACY CIRCLE. For those considering remembering LWML in your gift/estate plan, now is the time to complete or update your plan. Please know, you are making an eternal difference! If you have remembered LWML in your estate plan, please contact me (Ruth Ann Arbeiter at 618-763-4635 or email: [email protected]) that we can get your name exactly as you want it printed for our Legacy Circle.
