Nebraska Extension - Fillmore Co. 1340 G Street Geneva, NE 68361 402-759-3712 | [email protected] March 2017 Narrative Report Brandy VanDeWalle Extension Educator, Fillmore/Clay Counties Agriculture Cropping Systems & Risk Management Wrapping up pesticide safety education in March, I taught a total of 195 farmers from five counties about updates on pesticide safety, regulations and other issues impacting usage of pesticides, including herbicide resistance issues. I shared some results from the Nebraska On-Farm Research Network as well. Community & Environment Programming Elizabeth Killinger presented an Emerald Ash Borer workshop to eighteen participants in Clay County. She provided identification tips, management strategies and options for tree replacement for managing ash trees. Nicole Stoner, extension horticulturist presented on Emerald Ash Borer at the Geneva Rural Living Expo. Rachel and I had an Extension Booth teaching youth and adults about the soil profile through an edible aquifer activity. In addition Extension resources were given to participants and 4-H information was dispersed to those interested in the 4-H program. Crops - Youth I had a booth at the Clay County 4-H Open House showing youth the end uses of crops and invited them to participate in the crops Upcoming Events: April 2 nd – 4-H Animal Science Day April 3 rd – Fillmore Co. projectsandupcomingworkshops.TwentyfiveyouthparticipatedanditwasgreatformetocontinuemeetingmoreClayCountyfamilies. 4-H Youth Development ACloverKidCluborganizationalmeetingwasheldatbothClayandFillmoreCounties.ThisisanewprogramIofferedwiththegoaltoprovidesupporttoparentswhoareeithernewtothe4-Hprogramorhavenotbeeninvolvedin4-Hforyears.FourteenyouthandtheirparentsattendedtheFillmoreCountyprogramandfouryouthparticipatedinClayCounty.Atthemeetings,thenewlydesigned4-HHandbookwasgiven,inadditiontoothermeetingdatesandhelpfulmaterialstogetthemstarted.Werecitedthe4-HPledgeandPledgeofAllegianceanddidanactivitywhichgotthemstartedonaexhibittheycanenteratthefair.Inaddition,snackswereprovidedandparentssigneduptoassistwithfuturemeetings. ImetwithMariaWalker,SoutheastDistrict4-HCoordinatortodiscusscurrentandfutureprogramminginyouthdevelopment.Wehadtheopportunitytobrainstormonfutureprogramsandwaystocontinuereachingouttodiverseaudiences. ImetwithotherextensioneducatorsfromPolk,York,ButlerandSewardcountiestosetplansinmotionfortheCitizenshipWashingtonFocustripin2018.Fallandspringprogrammingwasoutlined.Statewide Issue Teams STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, & Math) Careers AgroupofExtensionstaffcontinuestoplanforthesolareclipseeventthatwilloccuronAugust21,2017.IconnectedwithSaraCooperfromtheNebraskaDepartmentofEducationwhoisinchargeofthesciencestandardsandprofessionaldevelopment.IncollaborationwiththeHastingsMuseum,somegreatlessonplanideashavebeensetwhichourteamwilldevelopandaimtolaunchbyMay1st.Community, Organizational & Professional Development AstudentfromNorthwestMissourishadowedmeforaday;IsharedinformationaboutwhatacareerinExtensionoffersandshehelpedmewithagsafetydaypromotion.News Columns & Blog Posts March1st-InnovativeYouthCornChallenge March8th-ProgramOpportunitiesMarch15th-CloverChase March22nd-TractorSafetyTrainingsMarch29th–EABworkshops
