FROM OUR PRINCIPAL Dear Alki Community,

Growing up in Western Washington, my family was fortunate enough to spend a lot of time power boating in the Puget Sound. From an early age, I learned the adage “Red skies at night, sailors’ delight; Red sky in morning, sailors’ take warning.” That little rhyme was a forecast for the kinds of conditions to anticipate. Now, as a school leader, it is the time of year to engage my forecasting skills once again. I only wish it was as easy as looking to the color of the sky to anticipate what is on the horizon.

Forecasting as a school leader is influenced by anticipated student enrollment which then informs the anticipated number of staff members and the anticipated financial funding. Alki has recently received our projections for 2016-17 and I’d like to share with you what we are expecting:

LETTER FROM PRINCIPAL CONT. Within these allocations, there is good news and challenging news for our school.  We are seeing a mix of increases and decreases.  The work of our BLT and PTA in the coming weeks takes on great importance as we determine how to utilize

our allocations.  We have opportunities with increased staffing in special education and ELL and increased funding in LAP.  We also have some decisions to make with decreased staffing in the number of classroom and PCP teachers.  BLT meetings are scheduled Feb. 29, Mar. 7, and Mar. 14 at 3:10 PM to take on this critical work.  BLT meetings are open to our school community.  As a young boater, I also recall those days when I saw beautiful red sunrises in the morning, indicating a “warning”.  There were a few moments with choppy waters, but I don’t ever recall an experience that we were unable to handle.  I feel like that about Alki’s 2016-2017 budget and staffing forecast.  We may hit a few waves, but we will remain strong and healthy in the end.  Our track record of working as a school/PTA partnership and resilience is evidence that our school, our staff, and our students will ride this wave and stand solidly.  I will provide updates to you in the spring editions of Currents to keep you informed. Also note that there are General PTA Meetings on Apr. 7 and May 12 where you can also receive updates.

Warmly, Shannon Hobbs-Beckley

KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION - FALL 2016 As we found out this Fall and the Fall before that… the importance of early Kindergarten registration (actually any new student's registration) is imperative to our school's staff planning for the following year.  In 2014 we had 20 MORE Kindergartners than were planned for… and the year after that 20 LESS.

Registering your child early not only allows for staff planning, it also allows teachers time to review and prepare for specific student needs such as allergies, medical needs, classroom accommodations, facilitates parent/school communication in preparation for individual student needs and it assists the school in preparing class placements.

ALKI ALL SCHOOL SPELLING BEE WINNER Congratulations to 4th grade Alki Spelling Bee Champion Parker Eley!  Parker is now on his way to compete in the Regional Spelling Bee on Mar. 13 at Town Hall in Seattle.

Kudos to our 2nd place finisher 4th grade student Kiera MacLachlan and 3rd place finisher 4th grade student Alexander Calamatta.  Thank you Laurie Rasmussen, Anna Coghill, and Alexis Hedrick for all your hard work putting this special program together.

Congrats Parker!

RUNNING CLUB Thursday's starting Apr. 21

Running Club is held in the gym every Thursday after school, beginning Apr. 21 thru May 19 (2:50 - 4:00 PM).  The club is run by parent volunteers for all grades and is intended to help kids increase their physical activity through games and running challenges with their peers.

Kids will receive a necklace and a foot charm for each week they participate.  For children who are registered, please remember to have your child wear appropriate footwear on Running Club days.  The cost is $52 for the five weeks of fun (unless the child’s parent coaches... then it’s free!). There are a limited number of spots available, so please hurry and get your registration completed by Friday, Apr. 1 (no fooling!).  Online registration is preferred:   http://tinyurl.com/jomlbwk However, paper registration forms will also be sent home in KidMail, and can be turned into your classroom teacher.  If needed, extra copies are available outside of the office.

More coaches are needed! Each group of children requires 2-3 coaches every week (our goal is 15-20 coaches).  The more coaches we have, the more kids we can include. If you are unable to commit to the full five weeks, but are still interested in helping out as a part time or back up coach, please let us know.  A mandatory Coaches' meeting is scheduled for Apr. 7 in the Cafeteria from 2:15 - 2:50 PM.  REMINDER: Participation in Running Club is FREE for the children of coaches!

AROUND THE SCHOOL

ALKI LEADS RECYCLING & COMPOSTING EFFORTS IN SEATTLE SCHOOL DISTRICT Alki Elementary School recently demonstrated why they are leading the way across the district in recycling and composting.

This year, Seattle Public Schools transitioned to mandatory composting in food service areas and improved recycling throughout the district. It’s been a huge learning curve for teachers, staff and students and they’ve all performed remarkably well. When it comes to recycling and composting however, Alki students are top in the district and they have one, special staff member to thank.

Every day, Amy Fields teaches students what can be recycled, what can be composted, what can be tossed into the trash and why. SPS spent an afternoon with Amy at lunch watching her in action.

Check out the video here: https://youtu.be/wHPs4MVbr6I

BUILDING LEADERSHIP TEAM (BLT) At the Jan. 25 BLT meeting we reviewed and analyzed staff data relative to plans for school improvement. The results are being used to prioritize professional development for the remainder of the school year and leading into the next year. The following are opportunities to learn more about the school budget process. All BLT meetings are open to the public and you are welcome to attend for observation. The BLT meetings regarding the budget are as follows: Mar. 7 - Tentative meeting for continued budget discussion if needed.

Mar. 14 - Review the final budget. Questions? Contact: BLT PTA Representative Laura Mount [email protected]

LEGISLATIVE CALENDAR

Wednesday, Mar. 2 (4:15 - 8:00 PM) Regular School Board Meeting, John Stanford Center Auditorium Sunday, Mar. 6 (11 AM - 1:00 PM) Community Meeting with Sue Peters, Magnolia Public Library

Thursday, Mar. 10 (4:30 - 6:30 PM) Audit and Finance Committee Meeting, John Stanford Center Board Conference Room

LEGISLATIVE NEWS The school board is an elected board of directors that

provide oversight for a school district.  In Seattle, we have 7 unpaid volunteer directors that oversee the whole district, but who are responsible for one of seven districts.  The school board is responsible for creating the policies which govern the school district and hiring the superintendent.  So, the school board has one employee who is responsible for implementing all district policies and hiring the staff needed to run the district.

The school board of Seattle has quite a big oversight task since Seattle has 99 schools, 53,000 students and an annual budget of $575M.  The school board does most of its oversight work in three types of meetings: 1) Regular school board meetings, 2) Committee meetings, and 3) Community meetings.  The regular school board meetings are held at John Stanford Center Auditorium, are open to the public and are also posted for viewing on YouTube.  The committee meetings are also open to the public, but are held in a smaller meeting room and not recorded.  The community meetings are held so that community members can speak with any of the directors.  You don’t have to meet with your district representative, although they will be more familiar with your school and neighborhood. West Seattle is big enough that it encompasses its own district along with Harbor Island and part of South Park.  Leslie Harris is our current representative on the school board and holds community meetings at local libraries on Saturday afternoons about once a month.  She gives an update on the issues she has been working on, then goes around the room so that everyone can introduce themselves and talk about their reason for attending.

I encourage everyone to watch at least some of the meetings on YouTube (https://youtu.be/KsYq45CmI_s) and/or attend at least one community meeting.  Community meeting dates and times are now posted in our eNews updates for those who are interested.

THE ROLE OF THE SCHOOL BOARD IN SEATTLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

WALK-IN FOR EDUCATION THANK YOU to everyone who came out last Thursday in SUPPORT OF PUBLIC SCHOOL FUNDING!!! Alki was one of 80 schools in Seattle to participate.  Kids, parents, and staff colored "Fund McCleary coloring pages" as well as wrote notes to the state legislature on what "their vision for Alki would be".

A special thanks to Jennifer Ogle, Amy Cooper, and Mr. Hannah for organizing the event!

THANK YOU Pizzeria 22 Big thank you to Pizzeria 22 for hosting our first Dine out for Alki in 2016 and donating 10% of their proceeds that night towards the PTA.
