Cabbage is a leafy, ground-grown vegetable that is available year
-round. It is part of the Brassica vegetable family, which includes
kale, broccoli, cauliflower, and Brussels sprouts. Different types of
cabbage include red, green, savoy, Napa, and even bok choy! You
can find these, and more, at your local farmer’s market.* Cabbage is
an excellent source of Vitamin C, Vitamin K, fiber, and folate. It is
also rich in immune-boosting compounds and helps to maintain digestive health. At 15
calories per cup (raw), cabbage is a great low-calorie food that can be added to many
dishes. It can also be steamed, baked, sautéed, stir-fried or even fermented!
When choosing cabbage at the market, make sure the it is firm with shiny, colorful leaves. Keep cabbage heads fresh for up to two weeks by storing it in a plastic bag in the coldest part of your refrigerator, and only cut it when you are ready to use it.

*The Market Match program offers farmer’s market customers who participate in CalFresh a dollar-for-dollar match of up to $10 when they use their EBT cards to make their pur-chase. So, if you spend $10 at the farmer’s market, they will give you an extra $10 to spend. Now you can try all kinds of local and seasonal fruits & vegetables!
CalFresh Corner Special Edition—National Nutrition Month
Savor the Flavor of Eating Right Since 1973, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has de-clared the month of March as National Nutrition Month. This year, the theme is “Savor the Flavor of Eating Right.” We en-courage everyone to take the time to appreciate the flavors and social experiences that come with enjoying a healthy meal. Think about where the food came from, how it was pre-pared, and what it tastes like as you eat it. How does your plate look? Does it include all the food groups?
Eating a Balanced Meal The United States Department of Agriculture’s MyPlate model encourages balanced eating. This is a great way to remember how to get the most nutrition from your meals. You can make your own healthy meals by purchasing fresh food with your CalFresh dollars.
Check out the MyPlate guidelines below!
"One of the very nicest
things about life is the
way we must regularly
stop whatever it is we
are doing and devote
our attention to eating."
- Luciano Pavarotti
