How backlist become better?

I wanted to let you know about four books where the time of them being considered new titles has past and yet the momentum for them continues. In 2013 we released Sue Milliken’s retrospective “Selective Memory” her life and thus a wonderful version of the Australian film industry from a first hand perspective. I really enjoyed it and are still to meet Sue. Over Christmas we received from the publishers some of her personal emails eulogising about how the book bought back memories of life in the film industry and warm thoughts. As I thought at the time this book is a seminal work for anyone wanting to know about this history. How can I excite booksellers to read it and in turn hand sell?

“Trailblazers” was written by our indefatigable Susanna De Vries some time ago and is being updated to include more recent women who have made a considerable difference: so we will have a new edition due in the first half of the year and the longevity of certain backlist titles is again illustrated.

One of my most revered books from last year was “The Tainted Trial of Farah Jama”; I thought it would really be a shortlist contender from my first reading; well it happened - it has been shortlisted for the 2015 State Premiers award in the non-fiction category. The book is confronting as it clearly indentifies how values are upturned, how oversites and omissions damage logical outcomes and so on. And how brave our authors and publishers are to bring these stories to print.

I also want to mention “The Colour of the Night”, by Robert Hollingworth, a novel released last year. The ongoing reviews have applauded the style of writing and locality of subject matter. I read Robert's prior novels and will now set about to read this.

Wow factor.

Wow; the book “Daring & Disruptive” took off and was the most invoiced book for the month of December and so far in January. And it should not stop. I have to say the online vendors are at over 40% of the sales to date and book shops are now reacting. We put it across the eBook platforms and it immediately leapt into the top 200 on one of the major Australian sites: this is huge for us as if this translated to physical books it would be on the top 200 on Bookscan. Our sales are global as well.

The other Wow is for Chris “Roy” Taylor's book The Great Big Book of Aussie Inventions. The author and publisher have had excellent review coverage across print media and we have billed it as our #1 book for Australia Day. Interested to see if I can place it in the Parliament House book shop in our nations capital.

Print on Demand and book shops.

We seem to have a constant flow of publishing originals coming our way. Because the path to book shops is almost entirely from inventoried books some of these titles escape the files, feeds and New Title order forms, so this month we have listed about 10 titles from Australian authors so as you can see what is being published. Awkwardly we will print stock ourselves so as it can show as stock on our website and show as stock on hand the daily onix updates. These books are firm sale and will remain that way until the actual publisher decides to print stock on a short run, or offset model.

Finally over the weekend I read the Susan Berg story “The Girl in who Lived”. What a powerful autobiography!

See you sometime this year – all over Australia.

March 2015 New Title Releases No Room For Watermelonsa man, his 1910 motorcycle and an epic journey across the world

In 2012, while others his age were enjoying quiet retirement, Ron Fellowes set off on the challenge of a lifetime. His dream to ride a 102 year-old FN motorcycle across the world - to the Belgian factory where the bike originated - had all the hallmarks of an epic adventure: one that was never going to be easy. For eight months Ron rode 14,600 kilometres through 15 countries under grueling conditions, into some of the world’s most hostile territory. He faced desert sandstorms, mountains too steep for the motorcycle’s capability, the threat of rockslides and bombings when he took a detour, and pressure from armed police through conflict zones. He was robbed, and when held at gunpoint, Ron came face-to-face with his own mortality. The motorcycle’s limited capacity - no gears, inadequate brakes and pedal assisted - made it a daily struggle. Breakdowns were common, and only Ron’s ingenuity and single-mindedness, Lynne’s logistical support, and the generosity of others kept him going.Beautifully illustrated in full colour throughout, No Room for Watermelons is co-written by Ron and Lynne. It is an engaging, and entertaining account of one man’s stoic determination to fulfill his dream. You will be carried along for the ride, and inspired to achieve your own dreams … no matter how impossible they seem.

About the AuthorsRon & Lynne FellowesNow retired, Ron spent his working life as diesel mechanic. For more than 50 years, he has ridden and restored vintage, veteran and classic machines. In his younger days, he raced speedway sidecars; tried road, trials and beach racing, and later, motocross. Today he enjoys participating in vintage motorcycle events and is currently planning his next overseas adventure.Lynne worked as a freelance journalist In the 1980s when she and Ron rode 200,000 kilometres from the top of the world to the bottom. For a number of years she was a regular magazine contributor, and an online-training-program administrator. Lynne and Ron have lived in several countries and have now made their home in Tasmania.

Soccer in New South Wales 1880‐1980 This is the first history of Association Football in New South Wales from its origins in the late nineteenth century to 1980. It tells the story that began when The Wanderers trotted on to Parramatta Common and then continued as immigrants, locals, miners and workers have combined to shape soccer in what has always been the code's premier state in Australia. The game progressed from paddocks to stadia overcoming The Depression, war and the rivalry of other codes and eventually a dominant culture that regarded the game as a foreign sport. This book plots and unearths how the 'world game' has fared in antipodean soil.

At last, the full story of the world game in Australia's premier soccer state - Bill Murray (historian of The World Game and joint author of Football in Australia)

March 2015 New Title Releases John Jess, Seeker of Justice

When one hears the words Voyager Royal Commission, the first thing that comes to mind is “whitewash.” John Jess described the first book ever written about Voyager by Admiral Hickling as “clearly piercing the darkness.” John Jess, Seeker of Justice goes a step further. This book is not an interpretation of history. It is history being allowed to speak for itself. In his own words, which Liberal parliamentarian Edward St John termed “the voice of Truth which can never be still or silenced” John Jess sheds even more light upon the collision between HMAS Melbourne and HMAS Voyager in 1964, which was the greatest tragedy in Australian peacetime history. A re-examination of the first royal commission, particularly the prohibited publication pages of transcript, sheds light on the collision and the conclusion proposes a reason for the collision that has never previously been advanced. No book comes closer to solving the mystery of this tragedy that cost eighty-two lives. No book has word for word the conversations that went on behind closed doors between politicians and prime ministers and the pressures and influences that existed between the powers that be. If a film were to be made about Voyager, this book would be essential reading as nothing has been glossed over, it has real conversations, real quotes; the true story has finally been told.

March 2015 New Title Releases The Girl Who Lived

The Girl Who Lived is the true story of a teenage girl's fight to find happiness.

As the sole survivor of a boating accident that claimed the lives of her parents and brother, Susan battled to find any positive meaning to life.

Losing her sense of self‐worth, Susan turned to sex and drugs before embarking on an unexpected journey of teenage motherhood.

Unwilling to remain a victim of tragedy, Susan faced her fears and learned to accept herself and the loss of her family, resulting in new found freedom and a thirsty passion for life.

Susan invites you on her journey as she recounts her experiences as a teenager, a young mother, and as a woman. The Girl Who Lived is a compelling memoir from a brave and courageous woman who invites you to journey with her as she recounts her experiences as a teenager, a young mother, and as a woman.

Prior to writing The Girl Who Lived, Susan Berg was an Executive Assistant to the CEO of leading Australian and international companies. Susan's writing credits simply involved business presentations, memos, postcards and Facebook status updates. Whilst writing The Girl Who Lived, Susan travelled throughout South East Asia, immersing herself in diverse cultures, and engaging in adventures so incredible she has enough material to write a second book - should she wish to do so. Since returning from overseas, Susan has been working back in the corporate world, however the travel bug is beckoning and it is suspected she may pack up her home, and be back on the road again in no time at all. Until that day Susan lives in Melbourne with her son, William, and their two dogs, Rusty and Ella.

Paper Tiger

Paper Tiger: How Pictures Shaped the Thylacine is an exciting new history of the thylacine, or Tasmanian tiger, that draws us closer to the animals who served as models for illustrations. It takes the reader on a journey behind artists' brushstrokes and photographers' lenses into the world of science, printing processes, publishing entrepreneurs, circulating libraries and bounties and reveals how inaccurate published images were ... and how profoundly they affected attitudes toward living thylacines. Written with sensitivity and an eye for detail, Paper Tiger uncovers forgotten drawings and lost photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, telling a story full of mystery and revelations. It demonstrates how pictures and words have a vital influence on a species' survival. As the rate of extinctions escalates, we are also reminded that sympathetic pictures have the power to provide hope for endangered animals.

This book is a compelling story for anyone interested in history and images or concerned about the natural environment, animal extinctions or conservation issues. It also provides a visual resource for art gallery and museum curators, print collectors and zoologists.

"This book is a remarkable achievement. Freeman tells the story of the thylacine in an original and deeply affecting way. We learn about the animals ... and the ravaging impact that human ideas had upon them. Freeman writes thoughtfully, carefully, and with force, and the book is a very good read" Nigel Rothfels, University of Wisconsin‐Milwaukee "This book provides a scholarly yet very readable account of a very great loss, the extinction of the Thylacine ... and has what it takes to become a classic text. Freeman's study makes a valuable and timely contribution to the question of how we are going to come to terms with our role in the burgeoning global problem of mass species extinctions" Linda Williams, Associate Professor in Art, Environment and Cultural Studies, RMIT University, Melbourne

Imperialism has long been the subject of sharp debates. Now Tom O'Lincoln offers an original study of Australia's ruthless participation in the imperialist system. Left analysts have often accused Australia's rulers of being "lapdogs" for the great powers, notably the USA and Britian. O'Lincoln's analysis of Australia's "boutique imperialism" gives us a very different portrayl: of a ruling class out to extract maximum benefits for itself from calculated interventions into the conflicts wracking global capitalism.This book is another of Tom O'Lincoln's distinctive contributions to Marxist history, following publication in 2011 of the book Australia's Pacific War.Tom O'Lincoln has been active on the left since 1967, in Germany, the US and Australia. He is the author of Into the Mainstream: The Decline of Australian Communism, Years of Rage: Social Conflicts in the Fraser Era and United We Stand: Class Struggle in Colonial Australia. Tom is a member of the Socialist Alternative.

March 2015 New Title Releases A Fine MourningA Generation Sacrificed to Chauvinism

War! A splendid game. Wailing bugles, clashing swords, thrusting steeds, the gritty flavour of saltpetre . . . Alas, no more! Not since captured by science and industry, and railway timetables. This time, legions are butchered on a scale unimagined, the survivors scourged and scarred forever. A generation sacrificed to chauvinism. Many welcomed it. At first. In sitting rooms and salons, from London to Constantinople, hatred and hubris flourished. A necessary cleansing, it was said - a brief, violent storm to settle too many overheated seasons of dynastic feuding and political chicanery.Arrogance, bigotry, sanctimony . . . Theatre! The world its stage. The characters: a folly of creaking monarchies and musty aristocracies.

Synopsis Joe West is an educated man, a reluctant leader who enjoyed anonymity until he performed a courageous act at Gallipoli. Since arriving in France he has had to come to terms with his fear and hatred of the War, but also a vague, terrible frisson he experiences during battle. Harry is a big man, a loner, and from an impoverished background. He is consumed by guilt arising from the accidental killing of his disabled brother shortly before enlistment. Stan, by contrast, was raised in affluence. At 19 he is the youngest of the three Australians. His innocence is particularly tested in an environment no man should have to experience. Joe falls in love with a nurse who works in an English Asylum. They meet during a brief leave when Joe and Harry visit a shell shocked comrade. The parallels between the world of the Asylum and the world at war are all too apparent. When the two men return to France and re-unite with Stan they find themselves struggling through the harshest winter in fifty years. But with Spring comes a tougher test. An overly ambitious General is planning a ‘demonstration’ against Germany’s vaunted Hindenburg Line . . .

About the Author“A Fine Mourning” is Rob Westcott’s second book, but first novel. “Lives Unrealised – Clienthood and the Disability Industry” was published in 2003 towards the end of a thirty year career working with and for people with intellectual disabilities. Whilst always possessed of a strong social conscience and a belief that all people should be valued, Rob has always been fascinated by the phenomenon of armed conflict and its impact on participants. He has a particular interest in the First World War having had seven family members serve with the AIF of whom one did not return. In fact, Rob can lay claim to an impressive military ancestry beginning with Captain Westcott who was killed at the Battle of the Nile whilst serving under Horatio Nelson. More recently are featured Major James McCallum, who commanded the Commissariat of the pre-Federation Victorian armed forces, and his son who was a soldier of the Boer War and had the distinction of serving twice. Rob’s father and an uncle served in Borneo and New Guinea respectively during the Second World War, and another uncle is a Korean War veteran. Rob is somewhat embarrassed to confess his personal experience of the military was limited to instructing his schoolmates in parade ground drill as a Corporal in the Air Training Corps! Rob Westcott lives in Canberra

March 2015 New Title Releases From Gallipoli to Coopers Creek

This is the story of one soldier of the so called Great War. He sailed from Australia at the end of 1914, a proud, even bombastic youth with the certainty that he would do his bit to save Mother England and by doing so, set the world on the right path. He was totally ignorant of the real causes of this war and the place that the different countries played in it. When he landed at Gallipoli though and found the air permeated with the stench of the hundreds of rotting bodies still lying where they had fallen a month earlier, he was confronted by the reality and horror of war. He records his first shot in his diary – it was far from the first time he had fired a gun, but it was the first time he had deliberately fired a shot with the intent of killing another human being. The evacuation of Gallipoli, then the inept defeat at Gaza and the realisation that he had to become a completely different person to be able to obey the orders he was given weighed heavily on his soul. Gandhi once said that ‘Man finds himself by losing himself’, and this is the story of how Lieutenant Bruce Campbell struggled to find himself and the difficulties he had in fitting back into a society where the civilians were still thinking in terms of their pre-war society. Returning home brought no joy either. Even things that he expected to be familiar now seemed strange and no one at home had any idea of what the war was really like. To make matters worse, he was dumped by his fiancé. This biographical novel is about his struggles to overcome all these adversities. He finally falls in love with a woman who has also been adversely affected by the war and has her own obstacles to overcome. Between them, they carve out a happy and meaningful life on the block of land Bruce has been granted under the Soldier Settlement Scheme. It is a heartwarming story about the legacy of the war and the healing power of love.

About the AuthorCatherine (Cate) Davis completed three degrees in education and was a Senior High School music teacher for most of her life. During her teaching life, she co-founded the Border Music Camp which is held annually at Albury and is now approaching its 41st anniversary. Unfortunately, because of the onset of tinnitus, she had to give up Music. Needing some outlet for her creativity, she turned to writing, and this is her third book with the first two works were a children story and a biography. Her father’s diaries from the First World War came to light when the family home was being cleared out following the death of the last of his siblings. Although his entries were very terse, after reading them many times she felt that there was a story here that should be

told.

March 2015 New Title Releases Tambora

In the best tradition of Paul Theroux and J. Maarten Troost, comes Derek Pugh's torrid tale of Sumbawa, and his ascent of the iconic volcano Mt. Tambora, whose 1815 eruption did indeed change the world.

Pugh's account of the eruption and its aftermath is masterfully done ‐ clearly the product of much dogged research through archives, scientific journals, as well as conversations with Indonesians lasting long into the steamy night.

Himself a long‐time resident of the neighboring Indonesian island of Lombok, Pugh is a well‐qualified tourist who also brings a wry and rollicking insider's account of local and ex‐pat life along the volcanic chain of islands.

The reader meets a wonderfully diverse cast of characters, from pre‐schooler jockeys, to an ancient princess alone in her decaying Sultan's palace, to brainless Western surfer dudes and their chicks who have no clue about the history of the slacker's paradise they've stumbled upon.

Pugh does a sterling job of filling that gap in Asian travel writing, as the many‐layered dimensions of Sumbawan culture ‐ their strict Islamism, great friendliness, and intermittent traumas, with the colossal Tambora looming across every page ‐ unfold to the reader like layers of volcanic earth from a hidden Pompeii.

March 2015 New Title Releases Women in IslamAnd the rights of women in Islamic law

One of the most controversial issues of our time is the rights of women in the world in general and in Islam and Islamic law in particular. The issue, for example, of wearing the Burka (the Hijab) by Muslim women in public places, schools, and in courts has made it recently to the front covers of most newspapers and magazines. Some countries have already banned the Burka in public places; others are reluctant for fear of limiting freedom and multiculturalism. But, what happens to a western woman who goes to a Muslim country, such as Saudi Arabia, where Islamic law (the Sharia) is applied? Is she allowed to wear a mini-skirt or a dress of her liking in public places? Or, is she able to wear a bikini on the beach?

Almost all Muslim scholars and writers, including women, have defended the position of women in Islam. While they draw their arguments on a very limited number of verses (Surah) in the Qur’an and Hadith, however, they take them out of their context in trying to prove that women under Islam are free and their human rights are protected.

This book shows how Islam has always considered women as inferior to men in every aspect: physically, intellectually, morally, and religiously. Their demise and denial of their basic rights are God sanctioned laws that every Muslim follows, not just ‘fundamentalists’. Indeed, the Qur’an remains for all Muslims, the uncreated word of God Himself. It is valid for all times and places; its ideas are absolutely true and beyond all criticism. To question it is to question the very word of God, and hence blasphemous. A Muslim’s duty is to believe it and obey its divine commands ... blindly.

This non-fiction book reveals the shocking truth about the real position of women in the Qur’an, the Hadith, in Islamic law (the Sharia) and how Islam is deeply anti-women. It reports the shocking truth of how women are denied their basic human rights in the Islamic law and … in real life

"Guilt is an emotion for which I have no time. It's exhausting, stops you from having any fun, and is the equivalent of one of those T‐shirts that says 'I went to [insert adventure] and all I got was this lousy T‐shirt'." In recovery mode after a messy divorce from a non‐Muslim man, Lara Abdel‐Aziz is estranged from her family and out of touch with her best friend Samira. Making ends meet by working in a fast food shop in Sydney, she also sings at a local bar, enjoying the anonymity of a favourite past‐time. Local guitar player Leo is good company, but her only other interactions are with her mostly‐absent flatmate Icky, and new age store owner Angela, who wants Lara to work for her and get in touch with her higher self.

Lara is comfortably on autopilot until a near‐assault at work forces her into counselling and she must start to unpack the events of her life and make peace with the past.

Meanwhile, an unexpected encounter with Hakeem, the strict religious friend once in love with Samira, leads to an unlikely connection. As an attraction develops between them, they both begin to repair their broken lives.

March 2015 New Title Releases Heretics

Heretics is a novel of forbidden love, set against the backdrop of the Hundred Years' War and the Inquisition. It follows the point of view of Tom, an English orphan boy and atheist who fights the French as a bowman. Wounded in battle, he flees to the town of Auch where he disguises himself as a Frenchman. In a tavern, he meets Claire, the daughter of a former priest, who is to be married to the knight Guillaume, and who has snuck out of her house dressed in her father's clothes to escape her plight.

When Claire's father and sister fall under the suspicion of the inquisitors, Claire's marriage is hastened to keep the good family name. Tom and Claire form a closer bond and sneak away to be with each other. However, the romance is stopped short when Guillaume discovers Tom's identity and captures him, while the inquisitors imprison the witches Gyverny and Imelda, who have been vying for Claire and her sister Eve to join their cult, and Gyverny pines for Tom's affections.

Author standing within a subject community: The subject of women treatment in Islam and their position in Islamic law has never been properly investigated or written about by a non-Muslim scholar. Most writings were written by Muslim scholars with a biased view aiming at either justifying the position of women in Islam or denying that Islam and Islamic laws are anti-women.

‘You can never get away from where you come from. This is poetry that confronts those difficult connections, gutsy work with a deep understanding of people. Tough, staring down the truth. Loving, too, but never sentimental.’—Anna Fern

‘From tender observations of children to the tortuous witnessing of a mother’s dying, Jennifer Compton’s poems zing and sting with the joys and complexities of real living. Her ‘dazzling intimacies’ and sharp, but generous watchfulness of all the world lead to swooping narratives that are poignant, funny, sensitive and fiercely intelligent. Now You Shall Know is a wondrously wide‐ranging, disarming and haunting collection.’—Jean Kent

‘This is generous, mercurial poetry with linguistic and dramatic verve and telling silences. In Now You Shall Know Jennifer Compton claims her space con brio: I think of a rider or ballet dancer and also of a long‐distance traveller since these poems cover so much ground. I warmed to the intimate, ironic assurance, to the trust placed in the reader and to the almost palpable presence of this witty, provocative, perceptive raconteuse prepared to tell me, in confidence, everything. There are such sparkling images in this book, and such acknowledged darkness too, a truthfulness and brusque compassion ‘as human as anything is’.’—Jan Owen

March 2015 New Title Releases Radiance

Radiance is a book firmly grounded in the reality of contemporary life, yet lit by empathy and humour. Kissane ranges from the self‐immolation of a Buddhist monk to a sailing trip on Sydney harbour with Percy Shelley to the celebration of an enduring relationship with The Moon.Lyrical, moving and surprising, these poems are warm and shining creations.

"This is daring and imaginative poetry. The poems in Radiance are clever, funny, tender and knowledgeable with an uncluttered clarity of thought and feeling that is very appealing. They are unafraid to go where they need to go. The last long sequence is a delight."‐Brook Emery

"It's rare for such empathy to coexist with supple poetics of this calibre. Mark Doty says a great poem requires the poet to build, with the raw material of experience, a vessel strong enough to contain its emotion. Kissane is such an artisan: the poems in Radiance are beautiful,  watertight vessels that are full to the brim. Drink deeply."‐Judy Johnson

"Kissane's work is magnetic and uplifting. It is a poetry charged with great breadth of emotion and diversity of image. There is tremendous variety to his narratives and poem after poem is crafted to excellence. He is a delight to read and to listen to, and gave a riveting performance at Ó Bhéal, Cork."‐Paul Casey

Savage Skies

Sadistic Hamish McMurtrie ‘Hacka’ Blanchard hatches a brutal but brilliant plan, the cold‐hearted brutality of which shocks even the hardest‐nosed policemen. With the aid of three former cellmates, he contrives to kidnap two federal politicians and demand a $5 million ransom from the government. Nothing could go wrong.

But Senior Sergeant Ken McLoughlin and his partner Tony Delarosa have other plans. In a dangerous race against time, they sweep through the sun‐drenched Great Barrier Reef, the Kimberleys, the slums of Poland, and the cattle stations of the outback in an almost impossible task to stop Blanchard’s trail of unimaginable violence.

Graham Guy, author of Eleven Days and Only Eagles Fly, brings you another riveting, fast‐paced thriller.

About the AuthorMichael Batchelor is a twenty-three years old graduate with a Bachelor of Communication from Griffith University on the Gold Coast. His majors were Writing and Journalism. He did an internship for a website called ‘Our World Today’, writing film reviews for the last six months of his University degree. Since his graduation in 2011, he has been writing novels and trying to break into the publishing market.

Michael’s ambition and passion has always been writing. He has been writing creatively since he was nine-years-old with mostly short stories. But since I was a teenager he has been focussing more on novels and novellas, with a particular interest in fiction and satire. I’m an avid reader, who mostly enjoys the classics, such as George Orwell, Mark Twain, Hunter S. Thompson, etc.

“The Red Chilli” is his third complete novel, and the first to be published. He wrote this book with inspiration to people he went to school with. The culture, language and attitude of his peers in his adolescent years are the inspiration and motive behind The Red Chilli. Queensland has a very unique culture that’s a relevant backbone of Australiana and as Michael says: “I’d like to believe I’ve shed some light into a satirical version of it.”

Anaimon

The reign of the Gods of Anaimon is sundered abruptly, when Propagator is, ruler of Anaimon’s divine pantheon, casts himself into the twin suns of the world, obliterating him from existence and triggering a cataclysm that tears apart the Gods’ star‐lit ethereal home. Their divine forms broken and ruined during the sudden, violent descent, the Gods fall and smash into the great cities of Cpharan and Cphesus, killing thousands, almost destroying with them their most beloved priestess, Burning Flower.Amidst the desolation and chaos, the Gods utter a final pulse of communication, telling Burning Flower with their dying breath that Anaimon is but one world, and that other cycles of Anaimon exist beyond even the Gods’ reckoning. If Burning Flower can find the three sigils that lead the way through these worlds to ‘Horizon’, she may be able to restore Anaimon and the Gods, and undo the great calamity that has occurred. Burning Flower is not alone in her search for the sigils, as a bestial enemy breaks free of their borders and begin to march across Anaimon; ravenous nightmares and misshapen hordes come to destroy all that Burning Flower and the Orders have fought for. Amidst such turmoil, the human enemies of the Order find new resolve; the nomadic, scattered tribes of the Iera who have been persecuted for their animistic beliefs and customs; the Aletheians, apostate criminals, smugglers, and exiles who value free will and their ‘ultimate truth’ above all else; and the Syndicals, rebellious heretics who have devolved into a broken people concerned only with survival in the bleak, barren emptiness of the world. These factions and forces surge and swell even as the Orders slowly fray and tear themselves apart in the wake of the Gods’ death. Pursued relentlessly by friend and foe across their slowly dying world, Burning Flower and those survivors willing to restore Anaimon must journey across the lands in search of the sigils, to find their way to ‘Horizon’, and the enigmatic power that lay beyond.

March 2015 New Title Releases The Beautiful Anxiety

The Beautiful Anxiety continually breaks across boundaries of the intimate and the global in an invigorating and unsettling mix of materialist and speculative writing on the interconnectedness of life amidst the environmental and cultural turmoil of the 21st century. The poems are in turn provocative, tender, impatient, playful, and swerve through the world, awake to its lostness as well as its 'flesh and spark'.

"This is surely a break‐through book. Jill Jones has compressed her lyric awareness into an exacting and low‐key brilliance: alert, astute, unsentimental, and with a linguistic intelligence so sharp in its inner and outer registers I keptasking myself: how is she doing it? There is incisive balance between the sensory and the fugitive, yet her images and figures are so crisp they feel more real than so‐called reality."‐Philip Salom

"Jill Jones' The Beautiful Anxiety, dedicated to the memory of her mother, joins elegiac witness to 'another flow'. Her sparse 'ruined lyrics' expand into 'something planetary'. Sensate poesis unfolds 'genres of dust'; the ghosts of Voss, Sappho and Messaien appear. The Beautiful Anxiety dwells in the imminence of loss, its 'vast frontier' and scope.‐Kate Lilley

"Jill Jones' poetry attains a Newtonian clarity by occasioning objects to collide with displaced emotion, breaking new ground through the estranging effect of coupling wonder with wryness. This book is an intense celebration of that subcutaneous disturbance often only present in the most acute poetic sensibilities."‐Brian Castro

About the AuthorSarah Evans is a multi-published and award-winning author of novels, novellas, short stories, poetry and songs. Sarah writes across all genres but has the most fun with comedy crime and romance, often combining the two. Her latest two books are rom-com-crime novel Operation Paradise and sweet romance Prudence and the Mighty Flynn. March 2015 New Title Releases The Word of God

The massive triangular shape of the mountain called Walshs Pyramid stands one thousand metres above the floodplain of the Mulgrave River in Far North Queensland. Eight army cadets on holiday have been hiking towards it. Among them are three of ‘The Hiking Team’: Peter, Graham and Stephen. There are also four 16 year‐old girls: Gwen, Joy, Megan and Charmaine.

As they reach the base of the mountain they encounter a shadowy figure dressed in black who tells them a tale so bizarre they find it difficult to believe. But not Stephen. He knows that it is true and convinces the group to act immediately.

As they climb the mountain in a desperate race against time, they collide headlong into a fearsome struggle for life and death with forces they barely imagined existed.  Over the ensuing four days they are tested emotionally, spiritually and physically as they seek to vanquish the evil that lurks atop the mysterious pyramid.

About the AuthorChristopher Cummings is a Vietnam veteran, teacher, parent, traveller, Officer of Cadets, and author of 35 books. Bushwalking, history and travel have added depth to his experiences. He grew up in Cairns and Cape York Peninsula, experiencing many adventures in the North Queensland bush and at sea in his father's ships, adventures he has woven into his books.

Tom Hassler is no ordinary boy. He can fly, for a start, and talk to sea creatures. But can he stop the slaughter of innocent whales and their calves in the Great Southern Ocean? Is he brave enough to stand in front of their harpoons, if that’s what it takes?

Tom Hassler and Snake Haven

As Tom Hassler, Hope of the Sea People, races to an oil spill from a wrecked ship to help the terrified, oil‐soaked birds, his mind is already on a holiday. Somewhere nice and warm. After all, his grandmother has promised – and he knows he’s earned it. But when he finds himself on a tropical island with his best friend Lydia and an aunt he’s never met, it all seems too good to be true. And it is.

Just offshore is Illiya Island – Snake Haven, home to a secretive snake‐worshipping cult. Mysterious giant saltwater crocodiles lurk, and when raiders strike, Tom must draw on every bit of courage and skill to save his friend from the evil snake‐worshippers. But has he bitten off more than he can chew? This time, will courage be enough?

Tom Hassler and the Rats of Droolmoan Cave

Thomas Hassler is an ordinary twelve‐year‐old kid. Life is boring, as usual. Until one day, when Tom’s life changes forever. An urgent call from a grandmother he has never met leads him to an isolated castle and an incredible inheritance – the leadership of the Sea People.

At Castle Hassler, Tom meets not only his eccentric grandmother but a girl called Maria and, even more surprisingly, giant seals, walruses, orcas, albatrosses and sea eagles. And the creatures have got an urgent request.

After centuries of being imprisoned, the rats of Droolmoan Cave have escaped. It is up to Tom to defeat the rats and their horrible queen. And learn to fly!

There are battles, trickery and courage as Tom and Maria face the hordes of killers, with the help of the boldest grandmother of them all.
