Now on display at the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, Seduction: Japan’s Floating World reveals the urban pleasures of Edo-period Japan through more than 60 works of art, including paintings, kimonos and an almost 58-foot-long handscroll vividly portraying a visit to the Yoshiwara — Edo’s most celebrated pleasure district. The concurrent exhibition, The Printer’s Eye: Ukiyo-e from the Grabhorn Collection, delves further into the floating world with a superb assemblage of Japanese woodblock prints.

Were you the first person to co-host Morning Edition from the West Coast?Yes. In March 2004, the Sunday before Bob Edwards announced he was leaving the show — that’s just 48 hours in advance — I got a call asking if I wanted to host for the summer. I was floored, but I was already on the staff of Morning Edition at that point as a substitute anchor, so I knew the role and challenges. Morning Edition is a bit like what they say about Ginger Rogers: “She did it all backwards and in high heels.” This show does what other shows do, but 24-7. I work the midnight-to-whenever-we’re-done shift, but even for hosts on the East Coast, you’re still getting in at, like, 3am. Just working these hours is a unique challenge.

You hosted All Things Considered in the late 1980s before returning to reporting. Why did you make the switch?I missed being out in the field. I’m glad I made the switch; I ended up getting to spend a lot of time in South Africa during two great moments in 20th-century history — the release of Nelson Mandela and his becoming president of the country.

Why did you switch back to anchoring?Hosting and reporting are very different worlds. They seem to tap different parts of your brain. When I was offered the Morning Edition anchor position, I was ready for it again. And I loved the idea of two hosts, two coasts — of looking at the country from two very different vantage points.

You and the other hosts do have the opportunity to do reporting, though?Yes. Steve is actually preparing now to go to Iran and after that to Israel, for its elections. David Greene spent more than two years in Moscow before joining Morning Edition in 2012, so it was natural for him to go back and report from Ukraine. I have been able to return again and again to Afghanistan, over the entire course of the official U.S. combat operation there.

How do you make the show work, being on two coasts?Much of it is technology. There’s really no sound delay that’s detectible, which is something that wasn’t possible 20 years ago. Also it’s about how our systems work. We communicate by sharing scripts on our computer screens as well as using an instant messaging system. I also take hand cues from the director in DC, who I can see on a TV screen. We even have red phones that the engineers rigged up years ago; when I pick mine up, a light goes on for my co-hosts, and vice versa.

I love the juxtipostion of the high-tech computer system and the red phone.Honestly, we use it quite a bit, when we need to say something faster than we can type. And for gossiping!

Is there a recent story that has stuck with you?Morning Edition is so rich in conversations. I feel like it’s one long movable feast of interesting people and voices. Our focus is so wide-ranging — from the Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes to the attacks in Paris. To pick just one story is really hard.

What’s one of your favorite ways to spend a day in San Francisco?The Bay Area is so beautiful and life affirming. From Tomales Bay, where I’ve spent a lot of time, to Berkeley, where I went to college, to Cupertino, where I went to high school, it’s a wonderful place. But one of my favorite ways to spend an afternoon is eating my way through the farmer’s market at the Ferry Building. It’s truly fabulous!

Bay Area Bites Guide: Ten Favorite South Bay Ramen Shops

In this era of climate change and globalization, parks and the scientific research conducted in them are more relevant than ever. KQED is partnering with the University of California at Berkeley, the National Park Service and the National Geographic Society for a special summit marking the 100th anniversary of the meeting at UC Berkeley that launched the formation of the National Park Service. The summit, Science for Parks, Parks for Science: The Next Century, will be held March 25–27 on the UC Berkeley campus. Author E.O. Wilson is giving the keynote speech on March 26, and renowned natural, physical and social scientists will be in attendance to discuss stewardship and public engagement. Also on March 26, KQED Forum’s host Michael Krasny will moderate a conversation about two of America’s best ideas — public education and public lands — between U.S. Secretary of Interior Sally Jewell, President of the University of California Janet Napolitano, UC Berkeley Chancellor Nicholas B. Dirks, and historian Doug Brinkley, author of Wilderness Warrior: Theodore Roosevelt. Summit registration is open to all, for a fee. Registration fees start at $200. The March 26 conversation (7pm in Wheeler Auditorium), hosted by Michael Krasny, is free. More information is available online.

National Parks and Science — The Next 100 Years

If the word ramen conjures up images of a packaged brick of instant noodles, Bay Area Bites has a guide for you. It is not clear whether the Chinese or the Japanese get credit for the creation of ramen. But Momofuku Ando, the Taiwanese-Japanese founder and chairman of Nissin Foods, invented instant noodles in 1958, which made ramen inexpensive and easily accessible. In the 1980s, ramen became a Japanese cultural icon and its popularity spread internationally. The reality is that although the noodle soup is a popular option for a quick lunch, the restaurants serving the dish often spend hours preparing the noodles and simmering their broths, which have a broad range of interpretations and styles. Ramen is continually trending in the Bay Area (some restaurants with cult-like followings) as devoted customers slurp up the springy noodles and rich broth year-round. From a simple sea salt base to the slowly simmered tonkotsu, the Bay Area Bites guide highlights ten popular destinations for ramen in the South Bay. to be trying to find a place for us with all the tech news that’s out there right now. How can we be more thoughtful and thought-provoking? I’m trying to cover technology and Silicon Valley in more of a meta way, in terms of the ideas and concepts that people are talking about. For example, we recently did a story about the notion of creative destruction. It’s a term that’s often used in the tech industry, but I don’t think people often know what it means. So it’s a bit of “Here’s this concept. Here’s how we see it playing out.”

Guilty pleasure?I actually am trying to get rid of guilt and trying to not judge the things I do. But if I were to name a guilty pleasure it would be binge-watching, most recently Borgen. I do also love to watch a lot of young-adult sci fi on Netflix.

What attracted you to this position at KQED? I wanted to host, so it was a great opportunity to host a daily show during the morning drive time. I also wanted to have a bit more control over the work I do, and I was really excited that Holly Kernan was here. I admired her work at KALW, and she was open to giving me creative freedom and letting me make my mark on the show.

What are some ideas you’ve had for changes to the show? I would like to expand my role to being more than just a presenter — doing more two-way interviews and producing additional pieces. I’m also working to add new music and make the show more sound-rich. There’s a desire on my part, and on the part of KQED, for me to do more reporting on technology. The issue is going

Inspired by the memoirs of Jennifer Worth, Call the Midwife follows the nurses, midwives and nuns from Nonnatus House who visit the expectant mothers of Poplar, providing the poorest women with the best possible care. In Season 4, the community prepares to enter a new decade — the 1960s.

The fourth season of Call the Midwife premieres Sunday, March 29, at 8pm on KQED 9.

This “biography” of cancer, directed by award-winning filmmaker Barak Goodman and executive produced by Ken Burns, covers its first documented appearances thousands of years ago through the epic battles in the 20th century to cure, control and conquer cancer.
