two men with a plan of action, then mix in generous members

of the community who continue to support it. Add in dedicated

of children with special needs and their caregivers and families.

Zachariah’s Acres is the brainchild of Bob Schowalter—a lover

of nature who gives back to the community through his time,

talent and treasure. As a volunteer and advocate for many causes

in the area, he often wondered where parents took their special

is now the backdrop to many activities for

these children and their families. And it has

literally opened a door to a new world.

“Bob had the idea to make his land

available to those less fortunate. he’s a man

of action,” said Terry Bartowitz, president of

Zachariah’s Acres.

Schowalter also donated nine acres of

land upon which AngelsGrace hospice was

built nearly 10 years ago. The hospice property

is adjacent to Zachariah’s Acres and they share

a common entrance drive known as Servants’

Way. The name is fitting and reflects both the

work of caregivers and volunteers who give

to these two ministries, but it also marks the

path on the end-of-life journey for those in

hospice care. Those served by both entities

are immersed in a peaceful natural setting—

a gift made possible through the generosity

of the Schowalters.

According to Bartowitz, he met Bob

Schowalter four years ago. he was asked by

Schowalter to help him form this nonprofit

and eventually lead it. As a parent of a child

with special needs, Bartowitz understood the

importance of this ministry and how it would

fill a void for many families in the area. While

the thought of creating a nonprofit from the

ground up was daunting, Bartowitz adopted

a mindset that inspired him to follow his

passion: Do something with the best years of

your life that will outlive you.

A board of directors was formed and

included men and women with diverse

strengths and talents. Bartowitz, together with

a solid team in place, formed Zachariah’s Acres

into what it is today—a thriving, engaging

ministry that reaches many people.

We initially met with dozens of

community leaders to present our ideas and

vision for a nature-based respite campus. It

took about 13 months, but zoning for the use

of the land was changed from agricultural

preservation to one with a public and

institutional purpose,” said Bartowitz.

he added that the primary objective is to

provide this access to nature for children and

their families, but still preserve and promote

the integrity of the land by planting 1,400

evergreens, 10 acres of wildflowers and prairie

grasses, fruit trees, a pumpkin patch, gardens,

and maintain three ponds (one stocked with

fish), and hiking paths.

Since the beginning, more than 200

volunteers have helped to build this ministry.

Zachariah’s Acres hosted its inaugural event,

a fall festival, in October 2011. Local farmers

brought over some of their animals, while a

transportation company lent the use of buses

with wheelchair lifts. Special mats were put

down to make the farm fields and natural

terrain more accessible. A tent for crafts and

activities allowed for some quiet time for

everyone to visit and enjoy the fun and

fellowship at that event.

“We’re thrilled to make outdoor and

agricultural experiences available to children

with unique health care needs,” said

Bartowitz. “And the messages that we’re

sending to these children include: acceptance,

love, inclusion, and letting them know their

lives have value.”

“Regardless of ability, you can be you at

Zachariah’s Acres,’” he added.

In the last two years, more than 1,700

people have attended six events, which include

spring and summer planting, fall festival,

a walk/run/roll on the grounds, an annual

Christmas tree sale, and the opportunity to cut

down your own Christmas tree.

“There’s a mission of authentic servitude

here and families are not charged to attend

events,” said Bartowitz. It’s through support

from local businesses, corporate and foundation

grants, and individual donors that enable this

ministry to thrive.

The team at Zachariah’s Acres is blessed by

strong community partnerships with volunteers

from within the business community, as well as

from churches and school districts throughout

Waukesha County. Activities led by high school

key clubs have benefited both the children

served and the teenagers who give of their time.

Students from St. John’s Military Academy and

members of the YMCA at Pabst Farms have

also provided support. And several Eagle Scout

projects onsite have included a wheelchair

ramp for the hay wagon, a raised garden bed

so children can plant or harvest and sample

vegetables, ADA-compliant picnic tables

with the appropriate height to accommodate

wheelchair seating, and a prayer shack.

One long-term goal is to build a 15-bed

respite facility where children can stay for short

visits, so that caregivers or parents can schedule

some rest and relaxation. Eventually the need

for an adult living community may be explored

in the future.

Currently in the midst of a capital

campaign, Zachariah’s Acres will tackle a few

projects in 2014. The campaign is underway and,

according to Bartowitz, they are halfway to the

$850,000 goal. A private drive, parking lot, and

construction of a multi-purpose barn will be

completed between spring and fall of this year.

With more resources, the team at Zachariah’s

Acres will continue to build and grow the

programming. “Our guests desire year round

opportunities, and we need to mitigate

the impact of weather by providing a roof and

the possibilities, and you’ll see the hard part is

done—the land is beautiful! Parents and siblings

of children with special needs bring the best

ideas because they know what inclusion and

acceptance should look like,” said Bartowitz.

Ways to engage those served and

give back to the community include

agriculture-based activities, where special

needs individuals could plant, then harvest

vegetables and flowers to donate to a local

food pantry. More funding could provide for

green houses, and accommodations for small

farm animals on site.

Zachariah’s Acres is lucky to have this

incredible acreage with great topography. “It’s

Bartowitz finds joy in the ability to serve

others, to include them and welcome them. “It’s

gratifying to hear parents say ‘Zachariah’s Acres

is a place that allows my child to participate

in activities that are not readily available

elsewhere,’” he said.

“One of the greatest and fulfilling

challenges is being introduced to thyself.

These special children have an amazing

RECENTLY, LAKESIDE DEVELOPMENT in Mequon was

awarded two “Best of houzz” honors for customer satisfaction

and design excellence. houzz is a collaborative online platform

for home remodeling and design, where homeowners and

home professionals come together in a uniquely visual

community. The awards are determined by the preferences

and tastes of the site’s more than 16 million monthly visitors.

While winning awards and being admired by people

you’ve never met is nice, Lakeside prides itself more than

anything on the relationships it creates with its clients.

Relationships that endure over time and often result in

customers building a second, or even a third home with

Lakeside. We asked Tanja Felton, a Lakeside Development

customer currently building her second home with Lakeside

Development to share her thoughts about her home and

why she decided to build with Lakeside.

Page 20: March 2014 Volume 67 Issue 5

Q: What does your home mean to you?

A: Like many families, we regard our home

as so much more than a house. It is a place where

we celebrate some of life’s greatest moments and

where priceless memories are created.

Q: Lakeside built your first house. Why did

you choose to work with them again?

A: The greatest compliment you can give a

builder is to go back for a second home. That is

what we did, and it was the logical choice. Our

first experience with Lakeside was outstanding.

They understand the personal nature of a home

to its owners. That’s why we chose to build with

them again. We wanted to go through the building

process with someone we could trust to deliver

a quality product tailored to our needs and with

whom we could enjoy the experience. Our home is

too important to place in the hands of just anyone,

and life is too short to not enjoy the journey.

Q: What has the whole building process

been like for you and your family?

A: From concept to completion (and beyond),

Lakeside is there. For us, it started from a distance

both times—in 1999 from Cincinnati and in 2013

from Richmond, VA. In fact, this time around we

did not meet in person until 4 months into the

process. When we tell others we are going back

to Lakeside, the first thing they say is, “you must

have been very pleased,” and of course we were.

Interestingly, people sound surprised that the

building process could be enjoyable, but that’s the

Lakeside difference.

Q: If you could point to one thing that makes

a Lakeside home different than others you’ve lived

in, what would it be?

A: One of the things we love most about

Lakeside is their creativity and attention to detail.

Each home is a unique creation tailored to the

needs of the owner. No two homes are alike.

however, exemplary quality is a trait they all share.

The other thing we value about our

relationship with Lakeside is the honesty, trust

and integrity shown by everyone at the company.

In an age of many unknowns, it is good to know

that Lakeside has our best interest in mind during

construction and long after the house is complete.

LOCATED IN ThE heart of Sheboygan County

is one of many well-kept getaway lakes in the

State of Wisconsin. Crystal Lake is one of the

few lakes that actually lives up to its namesake

with some of the clearest sparkling water you’ll

find in these parts and the location of this

impressive historic property. While this lake

is positioned relatively close to the Elkhart

Lake Road America racing track and several

camp grounds, resorts and other outdoor

attractions—the owners here like the fact that

they don’t have to put up with nearly as much

attention or noise as some of their neighboring

counterparts do. With one-hundred and sixty-

two acres of water and more than sixty feet

deep at parts, the lake itself also offers plenty

of great fishing and recreation.

cedar siding removed from the exterior—then

cleaned, treated and prepped it for installation

on these interior walls. This was all done as part

of a massive restoration/remodeling project to

upgrade the home with 21st century amenities,

while still retaining the character of the original

design. The cedar paneling was one of the effects

that accomplished that goal in spades. From the

foyer, the home is designed with a wrap-around

concept and a very open style. Passing the first

of three full baths finished in ceramic tile to the

right, you will enter a spectacular living room/

great room combination of over one-thousand

square feet. The first logical section of the room

is actually the original family room—

still sporting the stone fireplace that the owner

believes was part of the earliest design. It now

remains as one of the few original features to

still be intact. Due to the open concept of the

home and the wrap-around style of the great

room, it is around this point where your eyes

are drawn to the spectacular view of both the

lake and the surrounding landscape.

This is probably a good point to talk briefly

about some of the unique features outside. Just

off to the right, behind the home, is a stone patio

and sitting area with an eight foot tall hand-made

stone fireplace. From the patio or sitting area you

will notice a winding path leading down to the

lake bluff. As the story goes, this torch lit path was

often utilized several years ago by one of the elders

in the family. Because she couldn’t walk very far

without getting fatigued, they placed wooden

benches every 15-20 feet apart so she would

have a chance to sit down and rest. Those same

benches still grace the pathway today. By the way,

in case you’re wondering—the short walk down

the pathway is well worth the effort. At the end of

the path toward the bluff’s edge, there is another

sitting area with a gorgeous view looking over one

of the bays on the lake.

Sitting peacefully on one of the bluffs on

the west side of the lake, this home offers the

most classic of sunrise views and plenty more

from the pristine shoreline with over one-

hundred and seventy-six feet of frontage. The

home will celebrate its 100th birthday in six

more years, but you clearly wouldn’t know it by

the amount of upgrades and renovations that

have been done. The approach to the home is

somewhat innocent, depending upon which

route you take—from the north or south. As

soon as you enter the driveway however, your

perception immediately changes. Although the

driveway itself is relatively short in length, it

slopes downhill toward both the home and

the lake. Since the home is slightly offset to the

right, a visitor is instantly afforded a view of the

two-story home with the lake as a backdrop—

quite stunning actually, whether you’re a big

lake fan or not.

Upon entering the home, you are embraced

by wall after wall of warm cedar paneling. As it

turns out, the current owner had the original

Back into the home now, we circle around

to the kitchen. The chef’s style kitchen is not

short on amenities by any stretch. There are

granite countertops, a private sitting/desk

area, a corner dining island, wine refrigerator,

pantry space, double ovens and more. There’s

also a ton of storage space and built-in

dishwasher, all carefully concealed with

furniture-style cabinetry.

heading to the upstairs there are matching

bedrooms on either side of the staircase,

separated by the second of the three full baths.

The rooms are very similar in design and style

with matching twin beds. They each take on

a bit of that look-and-feel of an old-fashioned

cottage. Now, the master bedroom on the other

hand is clearly a different story. It’s easily the most

modern looking room in the home; the bedroom

and bath combination span the entire width of

the back of the home. Featuring windows that

allow for an awesome view of the lake there

are many other features that jump out as well.

There is an arched multi-dimensional ceiling and

recessed lighting to add a little extra character.

There’s a full wall of built-in book shelves and

a private workspace area. A walk-in closet then

provides a natural separation as we move toward

the adjoining master bath. here we find a full-

sized soaking tub and more granite countertops

around a customized vanity. On the far wall is a

ten-foot glassed-in shower stall with a ceramic

wall background—a very classy touch.

Some of the other “extras” included the

home are: a composite shingle roof; central

air conditioning and natural gas heating;

municipal sewer; fiber cement with partial

brick exterior; radiant and hot water heating; a

partial basement mostly for mechanicals; a two

and one-half car detached garage, an exterior

patio and private boat dock and much more.

For anyone looking for the ultimate

getaway lake property without having to travel

three hours north to get there—this home is

for you. It has the historic charm and serene

allure of a home that has clearly been nurtured

for decades. It is currently being shown by

appointment only by Stephanie Brunkhorst

The human side of real estate

Page 29: March 2014 Volume 67 Issue 5

REAL ESTATE ENTREPRENEUR Patrick Bolger

has a new vision for how to sell real estate. “Al

McGuire once said that if everybody worked

as a bartender and a cab driver, they would

be educated. I think that anyone who wants

to be a professional salesperson should spend

some time working in the car business,” Bolger

says. Judging by his meteoric rise through the

ranks of his former career—from salesperson

to finance manager, then from sales manager

to general manager of some of the largest and

most profitable dealerships in southeastern

Wisconsin—and his thirty subsequent years

in real estate, it’s clear that Bolger has gleaned

some important lessons about what it means

to sell successfully.

As one of the premier representatives of

lake properties and luxury homes in the Lake

Country area, Patrick Bolger has demonstrated

that he can translate those lessons into sales.

his success comes from taking a more common

sense approach to matching buyers and sellers

that runs counter to conventional wisdom. The

prevailing business model in real estate is to

congratulate an agent who sells a home in a

fraction of the time that most homes sit on the

market. Bolger takes issue with that. “If I sell

your home in fourteen days when comparable

lake country real estate

This assessment of how supply and

demand applies to sales has snared Bolger his

success. Instead of concentrating on selling

homes faster, he focuses on selling homes for

a more equitable price. For Bolger, the goal is

not to glorify his real estate acumen by proving

he can sell homes quickly, but to deliver a fair

price that reflects market realities for both the

seller and the buyer.

Because people who buy and sell luxury

properties are less subject to the economic

constraints that often come into play when a

home must be sold quickly, these homes are

sometimes the hardest to sell. Their sales and

purchases are contingent on what sophisticated,

intelligent sellers and buyers want, not what

they need. They exist above the everyday

demands of the market. Bolger understands

this, and it’s part of what has given him a grasp

on the current real estate market.

Now Patrick Bolger is taking his innovative

vision one step further by opening his own

brokerage in Oconomowoc. “I’d like to be

known as a boutique realtor,” he says. “We aim

to provide tremendous customer service by

specializing in our own corner of the world.

We know Lake Country, we’ve lived in Lake

Country. We know that each property on the

same lake is not worth the same. We know

that each lake here, each subdivision and

neighborhood has its own personality.”

ARE YOU FEARFUL of our becoming a society of computerized robots

plugged into a demoralized Congress wallowing in its own connivings?

Are you concerned over the superficial trends our country is

developing in education, politics, religion?

Are you disturbed over a seeming loss of ideals that represented

the cornerstone of our one-time world leadership? Do you deplore the

crime and violence your children are watching on the television screen?

Isaiah, a prophet who had watched with compassion the

tremendous problems faced by the Israelites as their fortunes rose

and fell, had an answer for his nation that was in a great need as is

ours today. he said, “…they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their

strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run,

and not be weary; and they shall walk and not faint.”

What does it mean to wait upon the Lord? To any thinking

person it must be obvious that to wait upon the Lord is to remain

firmly conscious that good may be expected provided that one holds

to the premise of God’s omnipresence and omnipotence, and that

to God all things are possible. It is imperative to hold to the premise

not just casually or occasionally but constantly and with conviction

every waking hour. A conscious awareness of a truth is essential to

the unfoldment of that truth in one’s experience. A glib repetition

of a statement is of no avail; one must permit himself to become

possessed of that truth.

What is the fruitage of waiting upon the Lord? According to Isaiah,

one’s strength is renewed. The realization of an Infinite Presence and

Power surges through one from one’s head clear down to one’s toes. One

is so suffused with spiritual strength that he feels capable of soaring

upward and onward, as does the eagle nesting nearby in the forest

which rises high over the tallest pines and heads dramatically across the

lake only to disappear into the unknown.

A sudden uplift of the spirit makes us run tirelessly to achieve

our goal. We have no sense of weariness. We are on the way to higher

planes of consciousness. A sense of dedication, of consecration fulfills

itself within us as we come closer and closer to a clear realization that

the Father within us is spurring us on. Gradually, complete in our

acceptance of the healing power of God’s presence, we settle down into

the comforting knowledge that what we have sought has come to pass.

We have waited upon the Lord, and from this moment on, we can walk

with him steadfastly unto eternity.

has not the time come for America to wait upon the Lord?
