President’s Letter: Greetings! Our Mirroring The World Around Us Exhibit at CCAS has been a fabulous event! Many thanks to Cher Bell for providing us this opportunity, and to the CCAS Installation Committee: Anna Marie Jacobi, June Bennett, and Judy Van for another fine job. Our Valentine’s Day Reception was particularly enjoyable because we received a visit from Beach Street, Walt Smith’s Barbershop Quartet, who graced us with a serenade of two songs! A photo of them is below. Thank you for making our evening so special! I hope you all voted in our People's Choice Award for this exhibit. There will be an announcement made at the end of the exhibit for First and Second Place People's Choice Awards. Ribbons and certificates will be presented at the March business meeting on March 22. Congratulations to our winners! 1st Place: Phil Krym, Another Surprise #1276, Wood. 2nd Place: Kathy Erickson, Trees Have Soul, Pine Needle/Muhly Grass. 3rd Place: Joan Klutch, It's a Numbers World, Mixed Media. Merit Award: Marsha Bisson, Exhibit Day at the Gallery, Fused Glass. Honorable Mention: Lorraine Capps, Breaker, Fused Glass. Next up is our Art on the Edge – of the Gulf exhibit at the Marco Island Center for the Arts! This is an exciting new venue for us and an exciting new audience. I hope everyone takes advantage of this excellent exhibiting opportunity. The schedule and a full description of this exhibit can be found on page 6 of this newsletter. A reminder email will be distributed shortly with directions to the MICA and one last copy of the Prospectus. Please note that we are still in need of assistance with the Reception and Removal. We also have our awards ceremonies for our Scholarship Program coming up in March! We will distribute four awards at Cypress Lakes High School on Friday, March 7 from 5:30 – 7:00 PM, and we will distribute four awards at the FGCU reception on Thursday, March 27 from 5 – 7 PM. I would like for the membership to experience how fantastic it is to see the artwork of these young people and to witness the joy our awards bring them. Encouraging young people to pursue the arts is one of the most important things the Guild does. Please plan to attend. Warm wishes, Lorraine

Southwest Florida Fine Craft Guild Business Meeting Minutes – February 8, 2014

Meeting called to order at 1:04PM by president Lorraine Capps

Matters presented and discussed:

> Lorraine congratulated and named the winners of our current exhibit “Mirroring the World Around Us”. She expressed concern about the seemingly less than enthusiastic participation and the bearing this might have for participation in next month’s Marco Island exhibit. She emphasized the importance of our making it an outstanding exhibit commensurate with our outstanding collective abilities, as we did with the Von Liebig exhibit. She reiterated that she and others would be willing to bring member’s pieces there if they are unable to travel there on receiving day and bring them back after take-down.

> Lorraine, as Scholarship Chair, noted that our judging/awards presentation to the art students is Mar. 7 for Cypress Lakes H.S. and Mar. 27 for FGCU. She discussed how rewarding and enjoyable it is to attend these and that we are increasing the amount of scholarships this year and encouraged members to attend. She also asked for someone to please step up and become the new Scholarship Chair. This would really be a big help.

> The Minutes of the Jan. meeting were approved.

> Reminder that the March meeting will be MARCH 22. We will be having the next Peer Review session as well as elections, among other items.

> Sandra Mark reported on ACSWF activities. She discussed the Spring Show and announced the winners of the 2D and 3D awards. She also addressed problem situations at the Coconut mall Gallery and why they had to have a training session for artist-sitters and are having another one on Feb. 16. A suggestion was made to have a smart phone at the desk which she will look into. Also; a reminder that next Art Council meeting is at the CCAS. Lastly she reminded all that she and John are hosting the Feb. Friendship Meeting on the 23rd and hopes to see all, but please RSVP if you are coming so they can prepare.

> Lorraine announced that the New Member Luncheon will be April 12 at CCAS.

> Joan Klutch announced that she is giving a presentation on Feb. 20 on Sanibel.

> The V.P. Committee met and came up with a list of exhibit names that were approved by the Board at their meeting. Also; they are actively seeking new venues for exhibits.

> Treasurer report: Current balance: $5,928.16.

> Kathy Erickson reported that we are currently up to 95 members.

> Phyllis Rieser listed all the volunteering opportunities still available. With 95 members we surely should be narrowing the list down quickly.

> Lorraine reported on Craft Bash in June Bennett’s absence. Also; there were 3 more art works that were raffled off.

> The 50/50 drawing was held and Edie Limbright was the winner. The Guild proceeds will be donated to Ronald McDonald House.

> Sandi Krym, Community Outreach Chair, wanted all to be aware that the Food Pantry also takes all clothing plus art supplies for children’s activities and pet food. They have expressed their deep appreciation for everything we donate.

> Meeting adjourned 1:45PM., followed by our guest speaker Anne Dalton, Esq. Anne gave a very informative talk re “Integrity and the Visual Artist”. She also supplied and explained a “Draft Agreement- Visual Artist Rights Act Integrity Clause”. Time restraints prevented her from getting as in-depth as she would have liked. If members identified any areas that she covered where they need assistance, please call her for an appointment and avail yourself of her expertise.

Respectfully submitted: Jim Sobel, Secretary

NEW MEMBERS:

You’ll notice something new this month in the New Member section of the newsletter. Information regarding how each new member was recruited will be included with their information in order to demonstrate the varied circumstances in which new members can be found. If you always keep a new member application with you, and if you keep recruiting in the front of your mind, it will make a huge difference in the amount of new members we acquire! New member applications have recently been printed and will be distributed at the March meeting so that everyone can have a supply. We will also be

distributing our Sponsorship Brochure at the same time. Please welcome our new members:

Maureen Ginipro, Mixed Media, 239-395-3718, 4619 Brainard Bayou, Sanibel, FL 33957; [email protected]. Toni Ory and Lorraine Capps were recently in an alcohol inks workshop with Maureen. Maureen asked about the Guild, and the rest is history!

Marita (Rita) Kemp, Glass, (609) 408-0472, 3796 Manatee Drive, St. James City, FL 33956; Summer: 615 W. Burk Avenue, Wildwood, NJ 08260; [email protected]. Rita was taking a glass class at CCAS during Receiving for the Mirroring exhibit, saw our fabulous exhibit coming together, and asked to join!

PEER REVIEW COMMITTEE UPDATE:

The Peer Reviews are off and running! Our first Peer Review included three artists: Trudy Edlebeck, Angela Aradia, and Bobbi Robinson. The Peer Review Committee (PRC) would like to thank all the members who took time to provide great reviews and feedback. We discussed some lovely jewelry, eggshell, and clay pieces with interesting discussions on each. There was a lot of energy and we are planning for the artists to talk about their experience at the March 22 business meeting. The next Peer Review will be after that meeting and will incorporate some of the member-suggested improvements. Edie Limbright, Phyllis Rieser, Gloria Winer, and Nancy Giffin will be presenting their work. We invite you can stay and participate in the review or, if you prefer, you can observe the process. If you want to know more about Peer Reviews, contact one of the PRC Co-Chairs (Sue Archer and Louis Ford) or go to the Guild website: Peer Reviews.

NEWS FROM THE VP COMMITTEE:

The VP Committee is actively looking for exhibit venues, and in that regard, is looking for exhibit themes. The Board has approved a list of themes so that proposals can be sent out quickly if a venue comes to our attention. However, we can never have too many theme ideas. Toni Ory has agreed to be the keeper of the theme list, so let her know all of your ideas for themes. Please brainstorm and give us all of your suggestions no matter how silly they may seem, because you never know what will trigger a good idea.

MEMBERSHIP UPDATE:

Please be sure you have paid your 2014 dues. Reminder notices have

been sent. Regularly priced membership renewals of $35 and $50 for

individual and family memberships respectively, were due on or before

Council shows. Kathy will give you your membership cards at Guild

contact information for new members and updates on current

members as they are published in the Newsletters.

Please consider taking on this position now so that you can participate in and observe the upcoming ceremonies. Ding Darling Upcycle Festival: See description above. Advertising Chair and Committee: The Board has developed an advertising/sponsorship brochure as a tool to assist in obtaining sponsors and advertisers, which been printed, and it will be distributed to all members along with the new membership application at the March

Art on the Edge – of the Gulf: Our March Marco Island Exhibit: We still need help with both the Reception and with Removal for this event. To discuss current volunteer opportunities, please contact Phyllis Rieser at [email protected].

FRIENDSHIP MEETINGS: Thank you to Sandra Mark and John Merchant for hosting the February Friendship meeting at their studio in Ft. Myers. It was interesting to see their lovely studio space. They are very lucky to have such a nice work area! Maryanne Olson is still recovering from back surgery and will not be able to host the March friendship meeting. March and April both are now available. Friendship meetings are our way of providing more opportunities for us to get together in a relaxed, social setting. The hosts simply provide non-alcoholic drinks and paper products, and the attendees supply everything else. The hosts may choose the day of the week and the time of day. Contact Lorraine if you are interested in hosting. Hosting and attending Friendship Meetings do not count toward Guild volunteer requirements. CCMI FOOD DRIVES: Collecting food and other supplies for the homeless and hungry is an important aspect of our charitable status, and is extremely important for our community. You may visit CCMI’s web site for ideas of food and other items to donate: www.ccmileecounty.com. You may also contact Sandi Krym, our Community Outreach Chair. When you are shopping at the grocery store or warehouse store, spend a few extra dollars to buy an item or two that is really needed: a large box of cereal, a bag of rice, or cans of beans would go a long way towards helping those in need. Pet food is also a great thing to donate since helping people keep their pets is one of the many fantastic services that CCMI provides our community. We collect food at every Guild meeting! Please help. Let’s make each month’s donations even bigger than the last!

SILK-SCREENING WORKSHOP AT THE VAC: There will be a silk screen printing workshop at the Visual Art Center in Punta Gorda taught by Arlene Richards from March 7 – 9 from 10 AM – 4 PM. Go to www.visualartcenter.org or call 941-639-8810 for more information. LONG TERM PLANNING: Please be thinking ahead, as we have the following Guild exhibits coming up in the future:

Visual Arts Center (VAC), Goff Gallery, Punta Gorda, January, 2015 (no theme yet);

Cape Coral Arts Studio (CCAS) February, 2015 (no theme yet); Sidney and Berne Davis Art Center (SBDAC) July, 2015 (no

theme yet). Please like both the VAC and SBDAC on Facebook. We are always looking for exhibit venues and themes. If you have any thoughts, please share them with Lorraine Capps or a member of the VP Committee. Our eligible winners from our exhibits will participate in the Council’s Winners Circle Show in March of 2015. We will also have the next Art Council Spring Show open to all Guild members in February of 2016. Pertinent dates for these exhibits can be found in the Art Council newsletters, and will be published here as they get closer. Check the Art Council’s web site, newsletters, and brochure for other art leagues’ exhibits that are open to all Art Council members. METAL DISPLAY STANDS:

The metal artist who created Louis Ford’s display stands is Byron Wood of Metalsmith Designs, Inc.: 12581 Metro Parkway #17, Fort Myers, FL 33966; Email: [email protected]; www.metalsmithdesigns.com; www.byronmwood.com.
