For fifty-two years, SBMSA has offered sports to boys and girls in the Spring Branch Independent School district, as well as area private and church schools. Six sports are included: baseball, softball, soccer, football, basketball and lacrosse. SBMSA, a 1,000 plus volunteer organization, main-tains 22 Spring Branch Independent School District lighted sports fields, providing construction, remodeling, concession stands, bleachers, bathrooms, storage and fund raising, as well as the team sports programs. Only the game officials are salaried. Former Houston Astros player Jeff Bagwell is one of the volunteer coaches for junior baseball, and his children all play SBMSA sports.

The sports program is open to children starting at the kin-dergarten level, continues into middle school and some sports continue into high school. Students may participate in SBM-SA even though they are not playing on their school sports team. For example, a high school senior may not be playing baseball for his high school, but he can play baseball through SBMSA, and SBISD fields are used. Steven Madden, SBMSA board member and volunteer sportsmanship director, says he grew up in the sports program as have his four children. “The program provides a sports education, new friends, outdoor activities and new experiences.”

Six thousand students annually participate in the SBMSA program, more students than play for the Spring Branch In-dependent School District. SBMSA offers financial assistance for players on a case-by-case basis.

SBMSA was founded in 1961 with twelve baseball teams. The program’s success and commitment of its volunteers is evident in the 52 years it has grown to six sports with year-round recreational programs for more than 6,000 students. Madden is pleased with the program and its growth. He says the future looks good for continued growth.

SBMSA raises funds through player fees, concession sales, donations and fundraisers. A large donation comes from the gala held every two years at the Houston Farm and Ranch Club. The gala, started in 2012 during the 50th anniversary of the sports association, kicked off a three-year capital cam-

paign that has already raised nearly $1 million. The 2012 gala was a huge success, says Madden, grossing $600,000 and netting approximately $485,000. “All of the Spring Branch Independent School District came together for the gala, and it was very cool,” says Madden.

The upcoming Boots, Buckles and Ballgames Gala marks the 52nd anniversary of SBMSA and will be held April 5th at the Houston Farm and Ranch Club. The western casual gala for adults will feature a silent auction, live auction and big board auction. Madden says ticket sales are strong and expected to exceed the 1,300 attendance from the 2012 gala.

SBMSA is about playing sports, but it is not just about playing games and having a good time. SBMSA’s mission statement is “to provide opportunity for our neighborhood youths to participate in a sports environment that allows for their growth and development in a safe, fair, positive and competitive league, with emphasis on the importance of building character, sportsmanship and team unity, in order to obtain the goals of champions.”

Dee Aldinger, president of SBMSA’s 16 member board, knows well the mission statement because her five boys and two girls went through the program. She says the sports pro-gram builds sportsmanship and character to prepare youths for success as adults. “Although some of the kids go on to play college sports, my children did not. Through sports, they learned time management, they loved sports and they loved good grades, but their focus was on spending more time on academics, and they were offered academic scholarships.” Through sports, they developed a wide range of friends.

Aldinger’s oldest grandchild is eleven-months-old; an-other one is on the way. Aldinger says she expects they will participate in SBMSA and derive the same benefits as the rest of the family. Counting the Aldinger’s volunteer work at SBMSA, that will make three generations of participants from her family. She says there are already many other three generation family members participating in the sports asso-ciation.

Volunteers are welcome at SBMSA. Aldinger says it is a wonderful group of volunteers who care about their kids. “They give and give for a cause they believe in. They’re from all walks of life who want to help their kids grow in life.” Aldinger’s husband, Keith, volunteers as a coach, as well as assists with organizing teams.

Madden points out some of the SBMSA alumni have gone on to have sports careers. He names former University of Texas football player KiKi De Ayala and Southern Method-ist University running back Craig James. James played for Stratford High School and SBMSA. Another alumnus is Koby Clemens, player for the Sugar Land Skeeters minor league baseball team and son of retired professional baseball pitcher Roger Clemens. Clemens other sons have also participated in the SBMSA program.

“Our students’ first taste of sports at SBMSA develops a passion and love that often carries them on and above and beyond into sports,” says Madden. Let’s hope that the SBM-SA continues that legacy for another fifty-two years.

Boots Buckles and Ballgames is Spring Branch Memorial Sports Association’s largest fundraising

event. It is a western themed gala that will be held April 5th at the Houston Farm and Ranch Club near Highway 6 at One Abercrombie Drive in west Houston.

This year, Robert Earl Keen, country music song writer and singer, is the entertainment headliner. Keen, born in Houston and a 1980 Texas A&M graduate, began his music career in Austin. His narrative Texas country songs, with folk and blues influences, have a sound all his own. Two of his most popular songs are The Road Goes on Forever and Corpus Christi Bay. In 2012, Keen was inducted into the Texas Heritage Hall of Fame along with Lyle Lovett and Townes Van Zandt. Keen now lives in the Texas Hill Country.

The gala begins with auctions and a barbeque dinner provided by Demeris Barbeque, followed by entertainment by Keen and dancing rounding out the evening. Western casual, the suggested dress, means wear your dancing boots, jeans and best belt buckle, and come prepared for an evening of barbeque, bidding and boot scootin’.

The nominees of this annual award re-flect the volunteer spirit of the organiza-tion, and honorees must have served the show as a volunteer for at least 10 years and on at least two different committees. The 2014 Trailblazer Award honorees are forward-thinking, productive volunteers who represent multiple committees and who have demonstrated a dedication to the Show through their time, talent and generosity.

The 2014 Trailblazer Award Honorees and the committees they represent are: Julie Shannon, Pearl Award, Breeders Greeters and International; Nancie Craft, Carnival Ticket Sales and Ladies’ Go Texan; Ann Page, Agricultural Mechan-ics, Lamb & Goat and Special Children’s; Wendy Vandeventer, Breeders Greeters, Gatekeepers and Mutton Bustin’ and Betty Wiseman, International, Poultry Auction and School Art Auction.

The Houston Livestock Show and Ro-deo is the area’s largest local volunteer organization, with nearly 28,000 volun-teers, and the 2014 Show runs March 4th through March 23rd. The Show is a 501 (c)(3) committed to benefiting youth, sup-porting education and facilitating better agricultural practices through exhibitions and presentation. Since its beginning in 1932, the Show has committed more than $330 million to scholarships, re-search, endowments, calf scramble par-ticipants, junior show exhibitors, school art participants and youth programs.

While most Houstonites stay close to the air conditioning during the hot month of August, band members from across the state face the heat to create the per-fect halftime show for the fall season. Stratford High School has had a long standing tradition of success throughout the entire Fine Arts Department, and the band has the unique opportunity of com-peting in both the fall and spring semes-ters. Members of the Stratford Spartan Band not only attend and perform at the school’s football games, but they also travel to local marching festivals to com-pete with bands from around the Hou-ston area.

On October 19th, the Spartan Band traveled to the Berry Center in Cypress for the University Scholastic League’s Region XXVII Marching Contest. The bands were examined by three judges and given a score ranging from 1-5 with 1 being a superior rating. Throughout the season, these ensembles work long hours to perfect those “superior” quali-ties in order to achieve the desired rat-ing.

Hard work did pay off for the Spartans last year as they received 1’s across the board! Every other year, the bands who earn these high marks then advance to the Area Competition and then, aim to go to the State Competition in San An-tonio.

Spectators who have the opportunity to witness the Spartan band perform know that these students work effort-lessly as a team to achieve the best and that their spirit and love for Stratford never dies out.

Rescued animals are special, and they seem to know how lucky they are to have a nice warm home and loving people to care for them. The people who save them are even luckier. These animals are so happy that they are at their best behavior in order to please their rescuer!

Today, there are 33 cats in Houston that are healthy and living the good life because of three animal friends who have “saved” them from the life on the streets. Television’s Mar-vin Zindler, Lori Reingold (Marvin’s television producer of 25 years) and Bob Dows (Marvin’s cameraman of 25 years) have captured and doctored those 33 cats through the years. They

couldn’t keep them all but managed to get them all adopted.

How did this venture of rescuing come about? Lori says, “Pumpkin, Alfie, Charlie, Mitzi and any other wonderful stray kittens took refuge on the covered patio outside of our office at Channel 13. Boy, did they know where to come! Marvin, Bob and I were all animal lovers. They had fresh food and water daily. When we had about ten bowls lined up, we decided to set live traps to see if we could catch them. We did! We caught 33!

“Each and every one was spayed or neutered, got shots and loving homes. This was our charity. We had a hard time catching Pumpkin though; he was wily and somehow ate the food

in the trap but escaped being caught. After a cold, rainy win-ter, we saw he was hurt, and we made an all out effort to save him. Pumpkin stayed with Bob for a while – he was a little feral – and made his way to my mother’s home. Mom was 90 and re-named him Velcro because he stuck by her side. Pumpkin had turned into a precious, purring lap cat. Today, Pumpkin and I live together, and of course, he rules the roost.”

There are many kind animal lovers in Houston who make getting animals off of the streets and into wonderful homes a priority in their lives. Houston also has several animal organiza-tions that are devoted to rescue. If you have ever attended a dog show in Houston, then you have seen organizations de-voted to rescuing and adopting out special breeds such as:

• Second Chance Poms• Houston Pekingese Rescue• Chinese Shar-Pei Rescue• Husky Haven• Bull Terrier RescueThese are a few – a very few! There are dozens to choose

from if your heart is set on a certain breed. The Houston shelters are overflowing with animals needing

homes. They are even more populated now because spring is time of the year when all of the new babies are being born. They are in addition to all of the stray, abandoned, feral and other homeless cats and dogs in the Houston area that have found their way into the shelters.

Lori, Bob and Marvin have helped with the cats they have rescued. I just wish Houston had thousands more rescuers like them!

Rescue Me!A ll of my pets have been rescues. They have come from

Citizens for Animal Protection (CAP), the Houston Humane Society, the golf course, the street and from friends who

have found them. There hasn’t been a bad one in the bunch! Presently, I have fifteen-year-old Tammy Whynot, twenty-one-year-old George Strait Eyes and the CAP doggie Princess Grace Kelly. Animals have filled my life with joy and caused great pain when they had to go on to animal heaven with all of my other wonderful pets. I have quite a menagerie of animals up there – parakeets, horses, dogs, cats, rabbits, opossums and even Stinky, my pet skunk!

The mission of the Athletic Orthopedics Research Foundation (A.O.R.F.) is to pro-vide crucial medical care and treatment for injured youth in the greater Houston area who are either under insured or do not have health insurance coverage.

Thanks to the expertise of the doc-tors and staff at The AOK Medical Center, as well as generous contributions from community members, A.O.R.F. is able to provide all services at little or no cost to the patient. “When I tore my ACL and got dropped from my football scholar-ship, A.O.R.F. took me in and treated me

like I was a professional football player! The surgery went well, the treatment was awesome and I am doing great. Thank you so much to A.O.R.F. for getting me back in the game!” said A.O.R.F. patient Samer Elqutub.

Each year, A.O.R.F. provides doctors and athletic trainers at over 300 school athletic events, provides low-cost physi-cals for over 700 students, donates sport-ing equipment to community programs and actively participates in educating stu-dents on health topics.

All donations help. Thirty dollars can provide shin guards, cleats and a soccer ball to a child in need. One hundred dol-lars can provide a brace to an injured stu-dent athlete, and $250 can offset the sub-stantial cost of surgery. To learn more visit www.aokresearchfoundation.org.

Acronyms inTexas Family LawBy Nancy L. Rommelmann PLLCFamily Law Attorney

T here are commonly used acronyms that you want to familiarize yourself with if you are involved in a family

law matter. Family law attorneys and judges use these acronyms in common parlance throughout the course of a family law case.

Dialogue among and between judges, attorneys and mediators can sound like a foreign language to a lay person unless you know to what these acronyms refer.

TFC: Refers to the “Texas Family Code.”

JMC: “Joint Managing Conservator” means the sharing of the rights and duties of a parent by two parties, ordinarily the parents, even if the exclusive right to make certain decisions may be awarded to one party. TFC 101.016 Being named JMC’s is a pre-sumption in Texas, but it is rebuttable (TFC 153.252) which means you can present facts to a judge as to why a JMC is inappropriate or unworkable (TFC 153.253) According to TFC 153.004, a court may not appoint JMC’s if credible evidence is presented of a history or pattern of past or present child neglect or physical or sexual assault in violation of Penal Code section 22.011 or 22.021.

MC: The rights of a “Managing Conservator” are found in TFC 153.132.

PC: A “Possessory Conservator” does not have the primary possession of a child but is the counter-part to a MC. TFC 153.191.

SPO: “Standard Possession Order” means an order that provides a parent with right of possession of a child according to the terms in TFC 153.311 through TFC 153.317. There is a presumption in Texas that possession and access (i.e. visitation) to a child in a family law case should be a SPO. A SPO is a not a presumption in cases where a child is less than three years of age. TFC 153.254.

TFPM: Refers to the “Texas Family Practice Manual” that is, among a broad array of other materi-als, a commonly used drafting tool containing “boil-erplate” or “form” language for a variety of pleadings and orders used by family law attorneys.

Heavenly Homes and You

When facing a difficult time, it has become very common to seek the guidance and advice of a therapist. Someone to listen, evaluate and help work through your problems. A pro-fessional interior designer can be a therapist for you and your spouse in making decisions for your home. The goal is to accommodate your family’s needs and create a wel-coming space for your family and friends. Your home is a reflection of your life. Style, color, layout, function and price are all factors that come into the equation of putting a room together.

One question the designers at Kaleidoscope Studio always ask is, “What do you want your home to feel like? Warm and inviting, bright and lively or simply sophisticated.” By carefully listening to likes and dis-likes and watching the interaction of a couple, your design therapist will put it together for you. They will sug-gest the right size and shape furni-ture with fabrics and finishes within your budget.

One dilemma is figuring out what is a priority and where to start. Fo-cusing on one area at a time keeps it from being overwhelming. Mak-ing these decisions for your home should be fun and entertaining. The goal is to enjoy the process and be able to sit back, relax and live in your beautiful home.

Try some decorating therapy! You will be pleasantly surprised how much you will appreciate it. Contact Kaleidoscope-Studio of Interior De-sign at 713-827-1282 or visit www.kaleidoscope-studio.com.

There is no question that the Houston housing market is hot. Home sales in 2013 broke the pre-recession record, fueled by Houston’s booming economy, low mortgage rates and an often critically low inventory.

According to Houston Association of Realtors® (HAR), sales of single-family homes soared 17.4 percent over 2012, also a record year. Energy – oil and gas – generates the unprecedented prosperity driving Houston’s juggernaut housing market. It is not surprising, then, that some of the hottest markets are the neighborhoods from West Memorial to Katy, dubbed the “Energy Corridor” because of the number of energy companies, including BP, Shell and Cono-coPhillips, that office in the area. These middle and upper-end neighborhoods are experiencing low inventory of available homes combined with strong buyer demand as energy workers seek to live near their offices and take advantage of the area’s excellent schools and parks for their families.

With 16 offices distributed across the greater Houston metropolitan area, Heritage Texas Properties believes in local specialists for local offices and has been a part of what is now the Energy Corridor for more than 30 years. Agents in the company’s Memorial and Katy offices assist customers in Memo-rial, West Houston, Katy and Fulshear in the sale or purchase of single family homes in all price points, including luxury homes, patio homes, town homes and rental properties.

Heritage Texas Properties’ Memorial office is located on Memorial Drive be-tween Dairy Ashford and Kirkwood. The Katy office is located on Cinco Ranch Boulevard south of Interstate 10 near the Grand Parkway. For more informa-tion, visit www.heritagetexas.com. See ad on Back Cover.

The David Young Team of Coldwell Banker United has recently announced their name change to David Young & Company, a significant move for a nationally recognized real estate company.

David H. Young, President and CEO, said, “In the world of real estate – not only within the industry but with buyers and sellers – the word team connotes one lead agent that hires supporting agents to help achieve their goals. I believe strongly in individual success and recognition, with an award winning team behind each agent. We’ve always offered the best of both worlds. We want our agents to shine on their own, and we want our name to reflect that.”

Young explained that the blend of support that he offers is unique: a high level team on staff from professional pho-tography, webmastery and marketing to contract to close monitoring, and group marketing, paired with individuality as agents with no territories or personal marketing limitations. “Our agents are not restricted in their pursuit of being an industry leader on their own; our goal is to the contrary. We want our agents to succeed at the very highest of levels and are here to support them.”

Noted as a top team by The Wall Street Journal, Hous-ton Business Journal, Coldwell Banker and more, Young be-lieves in change. “The businesses that thrive are the ones that stay in motion. This is forward- propelling for our agents, and they are the ones who keep us moving.”

Nothing sells better thancommunity passion.

Each office is independently owned and operated.

Celebrating their first anniversary this month, Back Row Antiques is looking forward to another great year. The beautiful 9,000 square foot showroom, located in the Memorial Design Center, is the home to 2 Lu-cy’s Antiques, Designs by Grace and Leighton Hale Antiques. The three dealers, each with their own unique “look,” work together to fill their store with an impressive mix of antique furniture and accessories from all over the world, custom furniture and gift items. Clients never know what they are going to find at The Back Row because the inventory is ever changing and evolving.

The 2 Lucy’s motto, owned by Tracey Shingledecker and Kelly O’Donnell, has always been just to “buy what they love” and their inven-tory reflects this. Primarily from Eu-rope with containers arriving several times a year, they have everything from one-of-a-kind pieces from the 17th century to mid-century furniture to whimsical accessories and gift items.

Designs by Grace owner Gracy Hall has an eclectic mix of jewelry and some antique finds, but her business is primarily custom-made and reproduction furniture. Tables, benches, chests and consoles can all be made to client specifications.

Leighton Hale of Leighton Hale Antiques scours the countryside and travels to France to provide a great collection of both American and Eu-ropean antiques. He also has a huge selection of antique pottery and breadboards.

2 Lucy’s, Designs by Grace and Leighton Hale Antiques have com-bined to make Back Row Antiques one of the best sources for home furnishings in Houston. For more in-formation, call 713-827-9292 or visit www.backrowantiques.com.

Which side of the head do people use to sell their homes? Sellers most often use the heart. The home selling process is extremely emotional for many sell-ers. If you are selling your home, it is no secret that you will have emotional ties and place a dollar figure on those emotional ties with your heart. This is where you raised your kids, threw great parties and shed tears of joy and sadness. Coming to terms with the fact that interested buyers place little value on those emotional ties is a bitter pill to swallow. Depending on the investments you’ve made to improve your home through additions, a pool or a new roof will also come in to play.

Ces Guerra, Realtor – Veterans Specialist, CNE, focuses on putting clients’ interests front and center. By developing a marketing plan that goes hand in hand with your goals, he will maximize the value of your property. Working with professional stagers and an experienced real estate sales team at MK Luxury Homes, Guerra will work closely with you to reach your goals and cradle your heart with tender loving business savvy.

So, what’s the answer to the question? Emotions are more closely tied to the right brain. How connected you are to your right brain will determine how deeply you must counterbalance those emotions with data, logic and facts. Either way, working together, you and Guerra will sell your precious home. For more infor-mation, call 713-298-6070 or e-mail [email protected].

Left or Right Brain?

Whether it is a putting green, playground area or simply a soft, clean lawn space for your backyard, let Green Links show you how to turn that outdoor space into a more use-ful asset to your family and home. With over 10 years of experience, Green Links has design skills and broad expertise to help you create a much more inviting, useful and beau-tiful outdoor setting and space.

The synthetic turf surfaces have become increasingly popular for a variety of reasons. They are con-sistently good looking and require very minimal maintenance. These turf surfaces drain very well and keep the outdoor space clean and dry. The putting green surfaces look and perform like top quality country club greens. This is how Green Links started the business, and they cre-ate the best designed/performing greens across the Houston region. These greens are used by the top area golf professionals and amateur players as home practice surfaces. Plus, many home owners find them to be great practice and social areas for family life.

In conjunction with the synthetic turf surfaces, Green Links under-stands the importance of integrating these spaces into your home setting, so they offer landscape design and installation services as well. Whether it is a seating area, water feature, ar-bor, stone work or simply updating the plant beds, Green Links will work to create an outdoor living space that is attractive and adds more enjoy-ment to your family life.

Making Space for Living.“From the initial meetings with the architect to finishing the last items on the punch list, Erin and her team always exhibited the highest levels of integrity and pride in their craft. Her straightforward discussions we had throughout the process, exceptional attention to detail and commitment to quality, and most of all her open transparency with respect to

project costs made our project seem easy. Stetzer Builders created a warm, beautiful, comfortable, and functional home for our family. Our home is not just a place to eat and sleep; rather, it is an extension of our family, a place to enjoy life, a place where friends and family can gather together, and a place of peace.” Client Testimonial

At some point during your cus-tom build or remodel, your “best laid plans” are bound to bump into some hard realities. This part of the pro-cess is often a difficult one for many clients because the change is auto-matically viewed as a setback.

Sometimes these changes are small, but they can also entail mov-ing in a whole different direction from your original thoughts. The key is remember that getting things right and making the hard choices in the beginning will lead to a better result in the end.

Yep. Is a movie made in one take? Nope! It is a creative process fueled with diligence, patience, persistence and fun.

Clients often feel bad about start-ing all over with the designer and architect. Don’t worry; they get it as well and want what is right for their clients.

It is necessary to stay detached and not get married to the initial set of plans. It is difficult to get all of the elements that go into planning a custom build or extensive remodel just right the first time through, even with the help of great designers and architects. But know that you’ll get there in the end, and the result will be something you are happy with for years to come. As Eisenhower said, “Plans are nothing; planning is ev-erything.”

T o say that Tucker May is an inspir-ing person is a great understate-ment. He has not only overcome

obstacles in his young life, but he has used those obstacles to catapult his de-sire to succeed.

While Tucker is hearing impaired, he has never let that be an issue that defines him. Most people who meet him would never even notice his hear-ing loss, especially since he is most of-ten found singing with perfect pitch on stage.

The hearing impaired actress, Mar-lee Matlin, has been very influential to Tucker because she is a good example of how someone has overcome their hear-ing impairment, which is exactly what he tries – and succeeds – at doing as well.

Tucker has always had a passion for choir and was selected for the Spring Branch Boys Choir before the 4th grade, where he sang with them for five years. He also participated in his high school choir at Stratford High School and com-peted in choir at the district and region-al levels. He loves musical theater and has participated in the Tommy Tune nominated winter shows at Stratford

Playhouse. Will Rogers Follies was the first play where he learned to tap dance and trick rope. He discovered dance, which led him to a part in Crazy For You, last winter. He is also part of the upcoming show West Side Story, and most recently, Tucker was pleased to be selected for one of the lead roles, Em-mett Forrest, in Legally Blonde, where he stood out of the crowd with his abso-lutely heart-melting voice.

In addition to his singing talent, Tucker is also a fantastic dancer. He takes dance lessons at Broadway Dance Center in New York City in the sum-

mer, and in Houston, he is active at Suzanne Seman’s Studio. He takes nine hours of dance class each week, as well as voice lessons. He was selected to at-tend a three week summer intensive with Broadway Theater Project last summer in Tampa.

Tucker is drawn to New York City because the heart of New York de-scribes his attitude towards life: busy and always having somewhere to be. He describes himself as simple but sophis-ticated, which suits him perfectly.

Tucker is actively involved in school activities and serves on the student council. He also enjoys participating in service projects for both the school and community. In addition to his theater involvement at Stratford, this highly motivated junior is part of the Academy of Finance, is the social chair of the Um-brella Club where “it’s raining school spirit” and the Quillow Club, where they make quilts for children at the Ronald McDonald House in Houston. He is a former member of the Educa-tion In Action Student Council of Texas and is very involved in the youth group and Children’s Worship Service at his church.

While he loves performing, Tucker plans to pursue business in college. He is currently studying many business classes at school and enjoys accounting. He would love to find a way to connect the entertainment industry with the business world in his future.

When Tucker graduates, he is look-ing at the University of Texas, as well as some small colleges in New York City. He plans to major in business, entrepre-neurship or entertainment business.

What is most impressive about Tuck-er is that he really loves proving people wrong when they think his hearing im-pairment limits him. He doesn’t consid-er it an impairment, but more an ability to be a little bit different.

To say that Tucker May is an inspiringperson is a great understatement.

Q: MY CHILD IS INTERESTED IN STARTING TO PLAY ONA SPORTS TEAM. ARE

THERE ANY PRECAUTIONARY STEPS I NEED TO TAKE BEFORE I LET HIM/HER GET INVOLVED?

Prior to participating in any physical activity program, it is important to have your child evaluated by a physician. Cer-tain conditions may affect your child’s physical activity program. A doctor may need to clear your child to play sports if they have a history of asthma, heart problems, previous injuries that haven’t healed properly, pre-existing medical conditions or if they are overweight or obese.

Q: HOW SHOULD I HELP MY CHILD PREPARE FORINCREASED PHYSICALACTIVITY?

The most important step is to estab-lish a pattern of regular, daily physical activity. Parents should strive for having their children engage in 60 minutes of activity every day. This includes free-play,

abso

Q A&Running and Safety

which is a great way to keep kids active and fit. If a parent has special concerns about their child’s fitness for increased activity, such as concern over a previ-ous injury, not having done much activity before or being overweight, the parent should consult with a sports medicine or fitness professional to come up with an age-appropriate conditioning program that can be done at home.

Q: SHOULD MY CHILD’S DIET CHANGE WHEN THEYSTART TO TRAIN FOR

A RUN OR WHEN THEY ARE PLAYING SPORTS?

Proper nutrition is essential to the health and wellbeing of children all of the time but especially when it comes to their success in sports. Children, not just athletes, should avoid high fat foods. On the other hand, high protein diets are not appropriate for children either. Bal-ance is important; the young athlete’s diet should have plenty of complex car-bohydrates for energy, plenty of protein for muscle building and enough fat to

stay healthy. Eating the right foods at the right time, such as lean meats and whole grains, can help provide the sustained energy during exercise and promote the recovery muscles need after strenuous exercise. Ask a sports dietitian, sports medicine specialist or fitness profession-al about your child’s dietary needs.

Q: MY TEENAGER IS GETTING IN THE HABITOF STAYING UP LATER

BEFORE A BIG GAME OR PRACTICE. HOW CAN I HELP HIM GET THE RIGHT AMOUNT OF SLEEP HE NEEDS IN ORDER TO PERFORM WELL IN SCHOOL AND ON THE FIELD?

Adequate sleep is an often neglected but very important part of training. A well-rested child has improved memory, metabolism and overall health. Teenag-ers need approximately nine hours of sleep per night. If they are tired after school, they should strive for an earlier bedtime, and try to limit napping in the afternoon which can interrupt restful nighttime sleep.

If your family is looking for a fun ac-tivity you can train for and compete in together, the 2014 Texas Children’s Hos-pital Family Fun Run will be held Satur-day, April 5th at Texas Children’s Hos-pital West Campus. Participants of all abilities, including those needing walkers and wheelchairs, are welcome.

To register, visit texaschildrens.org/funrun. The deadline to register is Sun-day, March 23rd.

Expert: Dr. Jorge Gomez, sports medicine physician at Texas Children’s Hospital West Campus.

W hether you’re participating in a family-friendly walk or run or you are quarterback of the high school football

team, training is key. There are simple tips that everyone can use to make physical activity fun and safe for the entire family.

J ohn Carrabba, a third-generation Houstonian, launched Piatto Ris-torante in the Galleria in 2001 us-

ing family-original recipes passed down from generations of Sicilian Italians. He learned to cook growing up in the kitchens of his great-grandmother Bes-sie Palazzo, grandmothers Jenni Triola and Mary Carrabba, and mother Mary

Ann Carrabba, who all lived in Houston. The restaurant itself is located just a few blocks from where Carrabba’s maternal great-grandparents, the Triolas, had a home and farmed during a time when

most of today’s Galleria area was occu-pied by Italian immigrant farmers.

John worked in management at Car-rabba’s Italian Grill for ten years with his first cousin, Johnny Carrabba, and Dami-an Mandola before opening Piatto. Born and raised in Houston, John attended St. Thomas University and earned a degree in business administration. He worked in banking for 13 years before pursuing his passion and entering the restaurant in-dustry at the age of 33.

True to his culinary upbringing, John operates Piatto as a family restaurant. His mother, Mary Ann, oversees Piatto’s full-service catering. His wife, Janice, works with him on the weekends, reaching out to customers and overseeing various business aspects. His daughter, Jes-sica, works at Piatto in between college classes.

“This is people’s home away from home,” John said. “They come in here, hug my mother, kiss her, my wife and daughter, the whole nine yards. I like to go around to the tables and greet people

AM What are you most ex-cited about with your new

Heights location?

JC I am most excited that we are joining the Heights neighbor-

hood, but I am also looking forward to the challenge that a new restaurant always brings. I think the Heights is due for a family-owned restaurant where the fam-ily is present and putting their personal touch on not only the food but the cus-tomers every day.

AM What do you hope to find in this new neighborhood

restaurant?

JC I hope to find a new beginning for not only our restaurant but for our

family. For my customers, I hope they find the exact same personal touch, which is a great atmosphere that is personally touched with family and great Italian food made from my own family’s recipes.

AM What is your favorite fam-ily recipe, and how does

it make you the restaurateur you are today?

JC My favorite family recipe would be anything involving eggplant.

One of my absolute favorite eggplant dishes is Eggplant Rollatini, which is egg-plant stuffed with cheese and topped

with a light touch of pomodoro. It makes me the restaurateur I am today because it always reminds me of large family meals and gatherings. I really like to welcome families and serve them from my family to theirs with these personal dishes my family and I often enjoy.

AM What is the best thing about having restaurants in

Houston’s Memorial, Tanglewood and Galleria neighborhoods?

JC The best thing is that there’s a real sense of community. Even

though I am a resident of the Memorial area, my family and I like to go to differ-ent areas and try new things. The same thing can be said for some of my custom-ers because they come from all over – The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Kingwood. That's one reason why it's nice to have restaurants in different parts of the city.

AM Are you looking forward to any flavor or foods to incor-

porate into your specials this spring?

JC I am definitely looking forward to incorporating fresh, seasonal fla-

vors into my specials to get people out of the winter slump. Both locations will offer a spring menu with food and drink specials that welcome spring – just as my family does!

Studewood, and will open in March. With 3,500 square feet, Piatto Heights will seat 134 guests. The interior features exposed pipes with no ceiling tiles, cement-pol-ished floors, copper-top tables and brick walls. Piatto Heights will have access to a spectacular private room on the top floor of the seven-story building. The room of-fers a stunning view of downtown Hous-ton with its own bar, private kitchen and private elevator. It will seat 80 and hold up to 125 people when its sliding nook win-dows and doors open up to the cocktail patio area.

The restaurant bar is bigger than at Piatto’s flagship location and offers craft beers and wines along with a specialty cocktail menu unique to the Heights loca-tion. Piatto Heights will be open for lunch, dinner and Saturday and Sunday brunch. John has always billed Piatto Galleria as “a neighborhood restaurant without a neighborhood.” He’s now moving into the Inner Loop near downtown – into a neighborhood.

Rodeo& Wine?

Absolutely!

The Carnival Food and Wine class al-ways intrigues me, and can you think of a better way to get ready for sum-mer than taking a class called Cool Pool Wines? I sure can't! Unless, of course, it's the Bubbles: Sparkling Wine class!

Don't worry, you don't have to take a seminar to enjoy the Champion Wine Garden. You can always just meet up with friends to visit and enjoy any of the more than 30 medal-winning wines served, including many Class and Re-serve Class Champion-winning wines.

I had the privilege of serving as a wine judge once again for this year's Ro-deo's International Wine Competition, and I can tell you, there are some deli-cious wines on the list. It was challenge to help select the winners from thou-sands of entries.

Just like all Rodeo Houston events, proceeds benefit student scholarships. Last year, the wine committee's efforts resulted in nearly $600,000 in sales. So, plan to swing by and enjoy a glass or share a bottle and help support Texas students while celebrating all things Ro-deo!

Spring Fling:An American Love Affair

in Houston

Spring Fling:An American Love Affair

in Houston

A hundred years ago, Houston was a perfect microcosm of what was happening around

the country. The early twentieth cen-tury ushered in dramatically differ-ent, culture changing technology from the previous century. Innovations brought increased living standards and improved health, which allowed more time for leisure pursuits. The quintessential example, the relatively new automobile, exploded in popular-ity, launching an American love affair which burns on still today. According to the website railsandtrails.com, in 1920, Houston’s person to car ratio was exactly that of the nation: 14.14 to 1. Houstonians, like most Americans of the time, embraced the progress of this new technology. However, things were changing so radically and so rapidly that many assimilated these changes mingled with tradition to more easily make the transition.

The traditional became highlighted more as people began to perceive the advancement of technology as threat-ening or an outright destroyer of cus-toms and culture. One example of an attempt to balance the new with the old way of life is illustrated well through the growing use of the automobile. People had more leisure time on their hands and increasingly became car owners. They utilized their time away from work and their new driving hobby, together with their nostalgic yearnings for the disappearing days of old, with outings driving through the country-side. People had a limited range of ex-ploration, but now, they could pursue their imaginations, tantalized by the mysterious lure of what lies beyond the next hill. This activity of exploration

came to be called “Touring,” and these road trips, often taken in the spring time, were so popular they made cars specifically for it! The preferred car for the job was known as a “Touring Car.”

This development of Touring Cars was an improvement on the estab-lished models referred to as “Road-sters.” Touring Cars, made to be suit-able for distance driving, were also open to allow the best viewing of the passing countryside. Some particular models had available side curtains that could be snapped or zipped into place in an effort to protect passengers from insects, wind and weather. The prefer-ence was to go touring in spring time so there was less need for protection from the elements, and nature’s spring blooms were on full display. Roadsters were smaller, essentially two person capacity vehicles, while the touring car typically was meant to carry four

to five people comfortably through the countryside.

The automobile arrived in Houston very early in the twentieth century and quickly grew in popularity despite a well-established streetcar system. Cars numbered barely more than 1,000 in Harris County in 1911 but ballooned to nearly 100,000 by 1930, reflecting a similar trend nationally. With this surge in car ownership came the need for better roads, more parking, gas sta-tions and mechanic shops and even laws to govern the motorists. In 1921, Congress passed the Federal High-ways Act, which set out an extensive program for road development. Ford Motors would build 15,000,000 auto-mobiles with the Model T engine and most were Touring Cars, accounting for more than six and a half million of the total. The five passenger touring model was by far the most popular body type, making up nearly half of all sales.

The advance of technology in some ways endangered tradition, but at the same time, it also deepened apprecia-tion for those very aspects of society which formerly had simply been taken for granted. For Houston and the na-tion, the love affair with the automo-bile was like most any spring fling: a mixed blessing. The weekend drives in the countryside came with both beauty and a sense of loss as people grappled with the changing times.
