A House For Wave HillSituated at Wave Hill in the Bronx the site has a awarded a rare NYC commision, a house in the woods.

Placed amongst a series of century old buildings, and at the top of a grassy slope, you’re awarded views of the

hudson river as a backdrop to thepermanent art collection at Wave Hill. The commission for this spot, a house

for a master artist, needs to capitalize on these natural features, not impede on the natural beauty of the site,

and create a new destination that is worthy of becoming an object on this natural landscape.

A House For Alexander Calder As A House for Alexander Calder to live and

work in for months at a time, I saw the opportunity

to take advantage of who Calder aws as an artist,

in order to create a house that he might not only

enjoy living in, but capitalize on the traits of his

ZRUNV���VSHFL¿FDOO\��WKH�PRELOH���,�HQYLVLRQHG�HDFK�programme of the house strung from an oversized

roof structure as if pieces on a mobile. There rooms

would come as heavy objects, and be strung together

by lightweight catwalks, delicate and transparent.

The functions of living exist on one side of the great L

formation, while the needs of the studio exist on the

opposite side.

As you arrive to the site, you are presented

with a structure that sits at the level of your feet, its

ORZ�SUR¿OH�REVFXUHV�WKH�VL]H�RI�WKLV�REMHFW��DQG�\RX�¿QG�LW�GLI¿FXOW�WR�FRPSUHKHQG�WKH�VWUXFWXUH���+RZHYHU��as you move closer you arrive upon a cutout in the

ODQG��DV�DV�\RX�ORRN�GRZQ�\RX�VWDUH�LQWR�D�UHÀHFWLQJ�pool, that stretches from your feet, all the way into the

underside of the structure, and as you look further you

can see the underside of the structure. It is no longer

an uncomprehensible object, but you can now realize

the delicate structure of the house that sits below

the roof. From here the elements of the house are

LQYHUWHG��DQG�DV�\RX�VWDUH�LQWR�WKH�UHÀHFWLQJ�SRRO�WKH�sky sits below the house, which sits below the ground,

and as Calder is able to achieve with the mobile, you

are now able to shift your perspective on the sky and

space.

As you proceed to enter the house, you

arrive at the entry to the building, a level pathway

that pierces into the roof, and acts as the only visible

disruption to its clean orthagonal roof form. As you

follow the path the walls of the roof elevate above

your head, until you are no longer at ground level,

though you have not climbed any ramps or steps.

You arrive above the living room to a vast expanse of

JUHHQ�LQ�IURQW�RI�\RX��DQG�IRU�D�PRPHQW�\RX�DUH�À\LQJ���You descend the staircase into a house that sits

DPRQJ�WKH�WUHHV��RIIHULQJ�PDJQL¿HG�YLHZV�RI�WKH�OXVK�landscape, a natural arrival for Calder, who’s other

homes suggest that this natural environment away

from the bustle of the city is his true element in which

WR�ZRUN�LQ���+HUH�\RX�VWDUH�GRZQ�DW�WKH�UHÀHFWLQJ�SRRO�and see the sky, and amidst this backdrop there is

inspiration for a mobile or a stabile. You understand

at this moment, that this is a house for Calder.

7KH�UHÀHFWLQJ�SRRO�VHUYHV�WR�QRW�RQO\�UHÀHFW�WKH�VN\��EXW�DOVR�SUHVHQWV�DQ�opportunity to display an artwork by calder, and a rare opportunity to have his

work displayed on water.
