Our daily lives also continue onward, so the obser- vance of a Lenten discipline is a choice we must make each day. Even if you are on the edge about observing Lent, it is never too late to begin, and your efforts will be rewarded by a deepening relationship with Jesus, and perhaps a new discovery about your- self along the way. One person may wish to fast in some way from something, or another may commit to special service during this 6-week period (not count- ing Sundays) before Easter. Another discipline is daily devotion and time spent in silence. Typically in the past Lent has been a time of deep study as per- sons prepare for Baptism, the mysterious experience of being cleansed from sin and beginning anew as a child of God within God's church. Even though our winter thus far in the Midwest has been pretty mild in temperature and precipitation, winter is a time of waiting, resting and transition from death to life. There are trees beginning to bud in preparation for spring, even though there will inevita- bly be another freeze and as there was serious weather, before spring is allowed to be revealed through the bursting forth of new life from an egg, a pod, a branch, or a hole in the ground. The scents of nature we experience now are relatively neutral unless we buy flowers from a store or nursery. The scents and colors of Easter lilies, hyacinths, and daf- fodils filling the Sanctuary with beautiful fragrance and a sense of rebirth as we celebrate the resurrec- tion of Jesus, fill minds and hearts with great expec- tation of hope and peace and joy.

PASTOR’S PIECE LIVING EASTER

We have begun our Lenten experience, which will continue until Easter, which is March 31 this year. Our daily lives also continue onward, so the obser-vance of a Lenten discipline is a choice we must make each day. Even if you are on the edge about observing Lent, it is never too late to begin, and your efforts will be rewarded by a deepening relationship with Jesus, and perhaps a new discovery about your-self along the way. One person may wish to fast in some way from something, or another may commit to special service during this 6-week period (not count-ing Sundays) before Easter. Another discipline is daily devotion and time spent in silence. Typically in the past Lent has been a time of deep study as per-sons prepare for Baptism, the mysterious experience of being cleansed from sin and beginning anew as a child of God within God's church. Even though our winter thus far in the Midwest has been pretty mild in temperature and precipitation, winter is a time of waiting, resting and transition from death to life. There are trees beginning to bud in preparation for spring, even though there will inevita-bly be another freeze and as there was serious weather, before spring is allowed to be revealed through the bursting forth of new life from an egg, a pod, a branch, or a hole in the ground. The scents of nature we experience now are relatively neutral unless we buy flowers from a store or nursery. The scents and colors of Easter lilies, hyacinths, and daf-fodils filling the Sanctuary with beautiful fragrance and a sense of rebirth as we celebrate the resurrec-tion of Jesus, fill minds and hearts with great expec-tation of hope and peace and joy.

The Lamplighter We will celebrate Easter, that our destination destruction has been overturned through the absolute love and sacrifice of our Creator incarnate, Jesus, who is the Christ, the Savior of the World. But first we must step back and take a look at ourselves. We must look within, let go, reflect. The buds are not yet ready to burst forth. Grace and peace to you,

Pastor Kristin

What is Easter?

A Sunday School teacher was attempting to teach

her young students the true meaning of Easter.

"Why do we celebrate Easter?" she asked. When

the children replied 'because of the Easter bunny,'

Easter eggs, candy, spring, etc., she said, "No,

those are Easter traditions and symbols, but what

is the REASON why we celebrate Easter? What

happened at the very first Easter?" A little girl

raised her hand and said, "Easter celebrates Jesus

coming out of the tomb." "Yes!" said the teacher,

excited and relieved that finally the correct

answer had surfaced. Encouraged, she prompted,

"Jesus arose from the tomb, and what

does He do for us?" The youngster replied,

"He looks to see if he can see his shadow,

and if He can, he goes back in for another

six weeks."

Legend of the Easter Lily Often called the "white-robed apostles of hope," lilies were found growing in the garden of Gethsemane after Christ's agony. Tradition has it that the beautiful white lilies spring up where drops of Christ's sweat fell to the ground in his final hours of sorrow and distress. Christian churches continue this tradition at Easter by banking their altars and surrounding their crosses with masses of Easter lilies to commemorate the

Resurrection and hope of life everlasting.

Easter Day Poem Christ the Lord is risen today!

Lafayette County Habitat for Humanity 5K Run/Walk It's time for us to start making plans for the annual 5K Run/ Walk fund raiser. I know that Dan Allred will be serving as our race director again this year and Don Smith will be helping with requests for funds as well as other things about the race. Now I just want to find out who else is interested in helping. The race will be on Saturday, June 15th in Lex-ington, starting in front of the County Court House. Please respond to this e-mail if you are inter-ested in helping prepare for and/or interested in helping on race day. Feel free to share this with anyone you think might be interested in helping. As soon as I have names of those interested in helping, we'll schedule a kick-off meeting to get our responsibilities assigned. The meeting will likely be on a Tues or Thurs evening at the United Methodist Church in Higginsville. I look forward to your responses! Thanks for your interest! Festival of Sharing Delivers Kits and Calendars to Prisoners Several volunteers worked to pre-pare and deliver holiday gifts for offenders in four Missouri Correc-tional centers, from the Festival of Sharing. Volunteers took a day out of their week to deliver hy-giene packs or calendars, to Chillicothe Correc-tional Center and Women's Eastern Reception Diagnostic and Correctional Center in Vandalia, South Central Correctional Center in Licking and Moberly Correctional Centers. The Women's Hy-giene pack was given to each offender in the Vandalia facility as part of a holiday celebration for the women incarcerated. "Thank you very much for your hard work and generosity." 2,800 calendars were delivered this year to men's cor-rectional centers. The ministry of Festival of Sharing touches lives by giving hope to persons for the future. The ma-terial gifts from Festival of Sharing are a first step. We seek to go beyond charity reaching

where needed most.

"Ohio Church Opens Doors to Feed the Hungry" BRUNSWICK, Ohio - Heartspace United Church of Christ opens its doors to help feed those in need in the Brunswick community. The church runs a program called Soup's On. It's a commu-nity meal that helps the feed the less fortunate in the city as well as surrounding areas. Soup's On takes place on the third Wednesday of the month from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., and the last Saturday of the month from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The food pantry is also open at that time. Soup's On was started by Sandy O'Hare, who at first was a bit fright-ened to do it. “I thought about starting a feeding program for a year before finally getting the cour-age to begin,” said O'Hare to Alexis Gemelas, BEAT Reporter for the Brunswick Schools. And even when the program first began, no one showed up for the first six months it existed. “Slowly, slowly people started to arrive." The Resurrection

16 1-3 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought spices so they could embalm him. Very early on Sun-day morning, as the sun rose, they went to the tomb. They worried out loud to each other, “Who will roll back the stone from the tomb for us?” 4-5 Then they looked up, saw that it had been rolled back—it was a huge stone—and walked right in. They saw a young man sitting on the right side, dressed all in white. They were completely taken aback, astonished. 6-7 He said, “Don’t be afraid. I know you’re looking for Jesus the Nazarene, the One they nailed on the cross. He’s been raised up; he’s here no longer. You can see for yourselves that the place is empty. Now—on your way. Tell his disciples and Peter that he is going on ahead of you to Galilee. You’ll see him there, exactly as he said.” 8 They got out as fast as they could, beside them-selves, their heads swimming. Stunned, they said nothing to anyone. 9-11 After rising from the dead, Jesus appeared early on Sunday morning to Mary Magdalene, whom he had delivered from seven demons. She went to his former companions, now weeping and carrying on, and told them. When they heard her report that she had seen him alive and well, they didn’t believe her. 12-13 Later he appeared, but in a different form, to two of them out walking in the countryside. They went back and told the rest, but they weren’t believed ei-ther. 14-16 Stil later, as the Eleven were eating supper, he appeared and took them to task most severely for their stubborn unbelief, refusing to believe those who had seen him raised up. Then he said, “Go into the world. Go everywhere and announce the Message of God’s good news to one and all. Whoever believes and is baptized is saved; whoever refuses to believe is damned. 17-18 “These are some of the signs that will accompany believers: They will throw out demons in my name, they will speak in new tongues, they will take snakes in their hands, they will drink poison and not be hurt, they will lay hands on the sick and make them well.”

19-20 Then the Master Jesus, after briefing them, was taken up to heaven, and he sat down beside God in the place of honor. And the disciples went everywhere preaching, the Master working right with them, validating the Message with indisput-

able evidence. Mark 16 (MSG) “Our Lord has written the promise

of the resurrection, not in books

alone, but in every leaf in spring-

time.” Martin Luther
