“If a task has once begun.
Never leave it till it's done.
Be the labor great or small.
Do it well or not at all.”
Greetings Friends,
I was reminded of this poem recently after completing a rather large task that I had begun many months ago. Somewhere along the line, I wanted to find information about someone who had been featured in GRAMS of FAITH, but I just did not have a clue as to where to look. Which month? Which year? Which decade?? Okay. So after realizing that wondering about where to find the article would not help at all, I decided to create an index of the publications—painfully aware that the very first issue was published in August 1980. As I embraced this task, I decided to begin with the most recent issue and work backwards. A good idea? I still think so. Anyway, as often as possible, I would pull the folder for a partic-ular year and try to get through all of the months: What’s on page 1? Who contributed an article or a poem? What special activities are going on at the churches? The index pages began to fill and the lists were getting longer. Hmm...didn’t realize that so many people were featured so many times over the years...And much to my dismay, I dis-covered that a few issues are missing—perhaps five out of approximately 400. I can’t imagine where they are…
A couple of weeks ago, I realized that all of 2012 through January 1993 had been done!! Wow!! There was still December ‘92—back to August 1980—plus the two months of 2013; but at least more than HALF of the job was done! A couple of Sundays ago, I put the pedal to the metal and thought that I could get through 48 issues...yes, I grabbed four years—but only made it through ‘92 and ‘91. Over the next few days, though, the job was done! Hallelujah! Thank the Lord!

And why take ye thought for rainment?
Consider the lilies of the field, how they
grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon
in all his glory was not arrayed like one of
these. Wherefore, if God so clothe the
grass of the field, which today is, and to
morrow is cast into the oven, shall He not
much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?”

Did you know that
March is "National Nutri-
tion Month?" Well it
is. It is a part of a nutri-
tion education and infor-
mation campaign spon-
sored annually by the
Academy Of Nutrition
and Dietetics. The cam-
paign is designed to fo-
cus attention on the im-
portance of making informed food choices and de-
veloping sound eating and physical activity hab-
its. The March 2013 slogan is "EAT RIGHT, YOUR
WAY, EVERY DAY." That really has a "ring" to it,
and it really makes sense. In other words, choose the
food that's best for you, not what others may suggest or at-
tempt to sell you on. And make that important choice daily.
Wouldn't it be great if we as Christians followed
the lead of the Academy only with a "spiritual" fo-
cus? But there would be no need to limit the cam-
paign to the month of March. Nor would we pro-
mote it only in the United States. How about the
slogan, "LIVE RIGHT, HIS WAY, ALWAYS." Now
that really has a "ring" to it. We would stress making
informed decisions by urging others to know what
the word of God says is best for us. We could high-
light the positive and negative consequences of mak-
ing good and bad choices. A good scriptural basis
might start with "The wages of sin is death, but the
gift of God is eternal life." (Romans 6:23) This actu-
ally sounds like something that certainly is not
new...evangelism. March 2013 is, however, a new
opportunity to kick start it. Let's all, this March,
give it a new try.
Speaking of trying something new, if you haven't yet
heard interesting legal topics discussed in the media, or
you just need a reminder of how you can, you can
tune into "Hampton Roads Weekly" on the third Satur-
day morning of the month when Attorney Eric Moody
will give legal advice on air. His next appearance will
be on March 16 at 7 a.m. on WKUS, 92.1 FM, and re-
played on 102.9 FM, 105.3 FM, and 107.7 FM on Sun-
day March 17 at 9:00 a.m. He has over thirty six years
of experience as a lawyer and he has even served as a judge.
Hampton University also features the attorney in a
program on their campus radio station, WHOV 88.1
FM, on the first Thursday of the month, this
month on March 7 at Noon, for a live legal question and
answer program with Cheryl Wilkerson called "It's The
Law." For those living out of town, the programs can

He Loved And Died
When He was being beaten and spat upon
When His flesh was being torn by the whip
When His back was scourged,
Then He saw me being baptized
and so He permitted them to do so.
When the crown was crushed into His head
When He tasted His own blood
When the thorns pierced His flesh,
Then He saw me praying
and so He killed them not.
When His cross was so heavy that he fell
When He carried wood on His torn flesh
When He wished simply to move no more,
Then He saw me in confession,
and so He got up and walked on.
When His hands were being pierced
When He hung from a cross
When His side was bleeding,
Then He said I love YOU.
and so He died.

Realizing that teachers
often have difficulty find-
ing interesting activities for
their algebra classes, James
Smith recently published a
book to meet that need.
A veteran with 32 years
of experience as an instruc-
tor of general mathematics,
algebra, and geometry, he
retired from Chesapeake
Public Schools in 2000 and
began working on his book
four years ago. Bro. Smith
states that the goal of Alge-
bra 1 Activities is to help
students learn the basic
concepts in Algebra to the
extent that they will not
need to use a calculator.
To accomplish this goal,
his book offers pages and
pages of puzzles and
games that are designed to teach and to reinforce basic concepts of algebraic computation.
Even though the author retired more than ten years ago, he continues to tutor students in all areas of
mathematics. He acknowledges that this is a passion for him and his love of
teaching is what prompted him to write the book.
As mentioned in the promotional material, “Algebra 1 Activities allows for
creativity, flexibility, and the enhancement of learning experiences in mathe-
matics.” Parents, please consider purchasing this book as a resource for your
son or daughter. For more information, you may contact Bro. Smith at this
email address: [email protected]
A member of First Baptist Church, Berkley, Bro. Smith and his wife Annie
(also a published author), reside in Chesapeake. They are the parents of two
adult children and the proud grandparents of three.
Much success in your endeavors, Bro. Smith!!

by Ethel W. Mitchell, Ed.D.
Superbowl Sunday LXVII was not the regular
celebration of the two best teams in the NFL com-
peting to become the best team in the NFL. It was
far more than that. On Sunday, February 4, 2013,
First Baptist Church South Hill, Rev. Michael R.
Toliver, pastor, was the place to be to witness
one of the best choir concerts this area has
witnessed. There was no competition,
rather it was an outpouring of praise,
worship, and thanksgiving to our Al-
mighty God! The mass choirs of
Bethany Baptist Church, Rev. Jake
Manley, pastor, and First Baptist
Church South Hill joined together to
worship and praise the Lord in concert.
The two churches have a wonderful
spiritual bond; Bethany Baptist Church
grew out of First Baptist Church South Hill
many years ago. The two mass choirs became
one massive choir of more than 100 voices and these
voices became one voice - the voice of praise and
worship to our Heavenly Father and our Lord and
Savior. The two church congregations came to-
gether to celebrate the life and work of a great man
in the gospel Rev. Dr. Jake Manley. It also marked
the beginning of the First Baptist Church South Hill
130th church anniversary.
The Reverend Dr. Jake Manley is truly a blessed
and anointed man of God. He celebrates his 90th
birthday October 16, 2013; his 68th wedding anni-
versary to the lovely First Lady Audrey Manley De-
cember 11, 2013; and he has pastored Bethany for
38 years! During his pastorate, Rev. Manley has
answered the “calls” of the emotionally, physically,
and spiritually downtrodden of humanity and has
held true to his mission: to offer a safe haven “from
the cradle to the grave” to the young, the old, to
black and white, and to the rich and poor through
the various ministries of Bethany. As the son of
sharecroppers, Rev. Manley is no stranger to diffi-
cult situations. In December 2008, Rev. Manley
was featured in The Virginian Pilot. He was credited
with going into the “hedges and highways” and
confronting angry men who were seeking
revenge. He spoke peace into the situa-
tions and convinced drug dealers and
gang members to lie down their
weapons and attend church.
These are but a few of the rea-
sons Rev. Manley was celebrated.
First Timothy 5:17-18, in part, says
that an elder who leads the church
in a good way should receive double
honor. Thus, the celebration was
awesome and well deserved! Members
of the music ministries of both churches
selected the music that spoke and yet speaks
to the boundless love God has for His children. Be-
cause of the “Greatness of God’s Faithfulness,” our
guilty stains were lost when our souls were washed
in the precious ”Blood of Jesus.” Then, the Lord
”Changed” us, ”Turned” us around, and spoke
”Miracles” into our lives. After God has done all of
that, we still don’t get right all of the time. As pas-
tor, Rev. Manley is a witness to this. So, God gives
us the ”Potter’s House.” God is a “Wonderful Coun-
selor” Who sends to us the Holy Spirit Who is just
like ”Fire” shut up in our bones. This fire causes us
to break out in an “Anthem of Praise” because God
is “Just That Good!”
To God Be the Glory, Great Things He Hath Done!
(Red denotes songs choir sang in concert.)

A WARM Welcome to
New Readers/Supporters!!
And To Churches/Ministries/Entrepreneurs:
Thanks for your “advertising support!” We appreciate your faithfulness!
Yes, I can now look at the 15-page, four-column list
and see lots of weddings, new babies, church and com-
munity activities, people with a variety of talents, student
accomplishments, retirements, entrepreneurs, lots of
church events, contributing writers, and the list goes on
and on. I see that my sister, Mary Brown, wrote a heart-
warming article on “The Restoration of Faith” in Septem-
ber ‘80 (the second issue!!); Rev. Jesse, the tailor and hat
maker, was featured in December ‘88 and January ‘89; a
former schoolteacher and co-worker gave birth to triplets
in December ‘89. Quite frankly, I had forgotten about
some of the GRAMS contents, and did find the undertak-
ing to be a rewarding (although seemingly endless) one.
Now that the index is current, I pray that it will be kept
that way. As soon as this issue is in the mail, I hope to
update the list and maintain this “catalogue” after mailing
each issue. Of a certainty, the biggest part of the task is
done...and I thank my God!!
Until next time,
Alberta W. C. Minters
P.S. How do you like the new cover design?

JESUS CHRIST IS THE WAY “Living right” is not just about being good and doing good...It is about accepting Christ and His Plan of Salvation. If you want to know Him, it ‘s as easy as A, B, C…
Acknowledge that you are a sinner and in need of a Savior “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23)
Believe in your heart that Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God, paid the price for your sins when He gave His life on the cross and God raised Him from the dead For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16)
Confess your sins by surrendering your life to Jesus, seeking His forgiveness, and turning away from a life of sin "For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation." (Romans 10:10)
To grow in Christ, become united with a Bible-believing church where you can let down your spiritual roots. Talk to God through prayer; listen to His voice as you read His Word; spread His Word by telling others about Him.
