NEWSLETTER Governor’s Message for March

As we follow the Rotary calendar through the year, we find out that March is Literacy month. This is a little bit different than most “Rotary Months”. Most of the months aim at broad avenues of service―like Vocational Service Month; or equally broad topics like World Understanding, or the Rotary Foundation. “fully literate”, about 41 to 44% of U.S. Adults are in the lowest level of literacy. They can read and write, but their skills are so low that they are significantly hampered from moving forward in society―a level often called “functionally illiterate”. The “average” American reads at only a 7th or 8th grade level. Rotarians aren’t about reading scary statistics: we are about trying to solve problems. What is your club doing to help increase the number of functionally literate people in your community―the kinds of people who will have the skills to get better jobs and be more productive for their families and friends? What more can we do? Many of our communities have excellent reading and literacy programs in place. Perhaps our clubs don’t need to be starting new programs, but what can we do to help other programs that are already in place. Rotary talks a lot about long-term strategic partnerships in all areas of service―literacy may be one of those areas where you club can pursue a strategic partnership with a school or adult education program. Go to them; find out what their needs might be, and work to fill in the gaps that are out there. If you’re reading this, then you know what a gift literacy is. It is the single most important key to a better life, no matter what your vocation. As we move into Literacy month, let’s think about how we can give that gift to others.Rock on . . .

RI President Elect Sakuji Tanaka has announced three RI Global Peace Forums for the 2012-13 Rotary year―and the closest to us will be on January 25-27, 2013 in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Honolulu Forum features “The Green Path to Peace” and will focus on the importance of conserving and protecting our shared environmental resources and mitigating the effects of natural disasters as a prerequisite to peace. Special emphasis will be on New Generations and how to empower their visions of peace.

The other forums will be held in Berlin, Germany from November 30, 2012 to December 2, 2012, and will look at “Peace Without Borders.” The third will be on May 17 to 19, 2013 in Hiroshima, Japan and is titled “Peace Begins with You.”More details will be available soon―for now, mark your calendar to be part of one of these Global Peace Forums.

As if you needed a reason to go to Honolulu next January . . .

Burbank Sunrise Assists Salvation Army with Armenian Translation Machine

Burbank Sunrise’s newest member, Kari Rudd, who, along with her husband Eric, is the new director of the Burbank Salvation Army post, proudly presents the Armenian translation machine we purchased for them for use in their church and other services. The unit works off of wireless transmitters and the Armenian translator translates from English into Armenian for their clients who wear the headphones that came with the unit. It is portable, which is how she was able to easily bring it to us, and so they will also be able to use it for events outside of the post. Besides church services, they also provide a language lab (for which this machine should really come in handy!), pottery classes, a homework lab, youth scouting, food distribution, family fellowship, and other programs, both educational and religious, for youth and adults.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIAAs our Rotary Foundation implements the Future Vision Plan, it has adopted Literacy and Basic Education as one of six areas of focus―along with Peace and Conflict Resolution; Disease Prevention and Treatment; Water and Sanitation; Maternal and Child Health; and Economic and Community Development.

Please make your plans now to join your fellow District 5260 Rotarians for our “Farewell” District Conference on June 8 and 9, 2012 at Beverly Garland’s Holiday Inn in North Hollywood, California. We’re having the Conference “in District” this year, so that everyone will be able to attend. Most folks won’t need a hotel room, but for those that do we’ve got a great rate of $139.00 per night for our limited room block. Since the Conference will be shorter this year, the meal price will also be very attractive.

Most importantly though, join us for the fellowship and the opportunity to see and hear more about the great things that Rotary does in the world. Friday night’s dinner will be our first event, and will be a “black tie optional” tribute to the history of our District. Then, Saturday morning we’ll look to the future with a morning plenary session featuring Past RI Director Paul Netzel as we “Reach Within” and look at great community and vocational service projects. Lunch will be when we recognize all our Clubs and the 2011-12 class of Presidents. That afternoon we’ll feature international

service and the Rotary Foundation when we “Embrace Humanity.” Finally, we’ll close with a fabulous Saturday night dinner, including a keynote address RI President’s Representative Peter Bundgaard from the Rotary Club of Ry, Denmark, and the final award of the Silver Bells. You won’t want to miss it! More information is available right now at www.rotary5260.org.

Rotarians at Work Day 2012 will be celebrated world-wide on April 28 this year.

What’s your Club’s Rotarian at Work Day Project? It doesn’t have to be a big deal―but we want EVERY club in the District out doing a visible, hands-on Community Service Project. Start planning now for a great day! This is your club’s chance to serve the community, and generate great public recognition for what you do.You can get more information about Rotarians at Work Day at: http://www.rotariansatwork.org.

1.It’s cheap―relatively speaking. Thanks to support from the Thai government, registration fees are

lower than they have been in years. Hotels are also amazingly inexpensive.

2.Thailand is full of Thai food. And Thai beer, for those of you who like that kind of thing.3.Great speakers and programs. The plenary sessions at Rotary Conventions are always filled with

amazing, inspirational speakers and great entertainment. The breakout sessions bring home tons of practical information that you can use to make your club better.

4.It’s the best place on earth to meet fellow Rotarians. Organizers are expecting over 40,000 Rotarians from all over the

world―but especially from Asia. We are Rotary International, after all, and this is the best place to see how international we

really are.5.RI Conventions are FUN. ‘Nuff said about that.

Make your plans NOW, so that we can see you in Bangkok, May 6-10, 2012. Register on-line at www.rotary.org, and click on the

Convention links.

All of our members who work with youth must be certified that i) they went through the Youth Protection training program and ii) have completed a background check. This includes members (or in that matter anyone over the age of eighteen who volunteers) working with such programs as Interact, Youth Exchange, school programs and RYLA. Many of our members have already completed the training and background checks, but we have new members and RYLA is coming up in April. The cost of the background check is $6.00 to the member or volunteer.DATE: March 17, 2012TIME: 9:00 A.M. – 11:30 A.M.PLACE: Salvation Army Facility, Van NuysADDRESS: 14917 Victory Blvd., Van Nuys, CA (just east of Kester)

We do need a headcount from you as soon as possible of all who are planning to attend. With everything that has been in the news lately, it is even more imperative that our members attend this training, so please encourage their attendance. If you have any questions, I can be reached at either of the numbers below. Please RSVP to Bette HallCell 805-320-4656Home Office 818-716-8852

Don’t forget that the deadline for the RI Presidential Citation is MARCH 31, 2012 and the RI Changemaker Award is MARCH 15, 2012! Remember, your club must earn both of these recognitions to be eligible for Silver Bell Consideration. Don’t forget that eligibility depends on your Club’s membership and Foundation giving records with Rotary International―so get those records up-to-date on Member Access, and make sure that those Foundation Contributions are actually delivered to the Rotary Foundation and reflected on your Club Recognition Summary reports! Copies of the Presidential Citation and Changemaker Award applications are available at www.rotary5260.org and at www.rotary.org. Any questions? You can contact District Awards Chair Sherri Dumin at [email protected].

Club Recognition Deadlines this Month!!!!!

How is your Club Membership Program Going?

It’s March, and too often as we move through the Rotary year we make a big deal out of membership in July and August, and then forget about it by the time spring rolls around―but there is never a time to not bring new members into your club! You will all soon be learning about the IGNITE membership program that Districts all over the West Coast will be promoting for the 2012-13 Rotary Year. Right now, though, you should all be trying to pre-ignite your clubs for solid, long-term membership growth. Put in the place the basics to make your club an attractive, energetic group of people whom others will want to join to make the world a better place. What have you done this year to bring in new, interesting programs for your weekly meetings? How many friends and colleagues have you invited to your club? What new projects have you organized? How have you helped spread the good word about your club? Now is the time to “pre-ignite” for a great future for your club!

Around 5260—What’s Up with Your Club?On January 25, Shawn Tolleson, Writer/Director and Gregory Limpin, Executive Producer, spoke to Mammoth Lakes Sunrise Rotary about their new film, Saturn Returns. The film is set in the Eastern Sierra Mountains, in beautiful Mammoth Lakes, California and the surrounding areas. Locations include Mono Lake, Inyo National Forest and Bodie, a historic gold rush town maintained in a state of “arrested decay” by the California Parks Department. Research has shown that when a movie location is named and featured in a film, visitation to that location increases significantly. The film team is looking for backers for a film that would help put summer time Mammoth on the map. Mammoth, as a resort town, could really use this additional publicity.

Tell us all about the fun and important projects that your club is working on. Send a short email to Newsletter Editor Vickie Taton at [email protected]. Send a picture while you’re at it!

The Provisional E Club of the Greater San Fernando Valley was busy helping out during the national Salute to Veteran’s Day at the

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIARotarians have always been active in promoting literacy projects. For example, Australian Rotarians developed the Lighthouse for Literacy program in Thailand. The project’s teaching methods were so successful that the Thai Government adopted it for all of the nation’s schools.

ROTARY INTERNATIONAL TRIVIARotary Clubs around the world have also sponsored the Concentrated Language Encounter program (CLE). At the 2007 RI Convention in Salt Lake City, 22 year old Emine Yuzay, from Turkey described how this program allowed her to grow from a 17 year old illiterate to a language instructor herself. A Rotary literacy program literally changed her life.

February 18 saw a jointly promoted E Waste collection event with the Rotary Club of North Hollywood and the Rotary Club of Van Nuys. This project not only raised funds for the clubs, but helped to rid their communities of tons of . . . E Waste. Look for a similar project from the Rotary Club of West San Fernando Valley in early March.

North Hollywood Rotarians (with some help from Universal City Sunrise), and a ton of E waste.
